Boys Summary by Chris Derrick

The marathon event of boys track and field, the boys 4xMile began with a tight pack of 6 headed by Port Washington navigating a conservative opening 800 (around 2:15). Red Tide TC took a 15 meter lead over the strung out group of Hansons TC, Fishers HS, and the Woodlands TC to hand off at the 4:22 mark. A lap into the second leg Fishers had bridged the gap and would soon move into the lead. A pack of four teams (Woodlands, Hansons, Jackalopes TC and Pinckney) slowly moved up on the leading two, until going into the last lap of the leg all 6 teams were within 10 meters of each other. Fishers (whose leg would run 4:23) and the Jackalopes (4:21 second leg) kicked away from the group with 300 to go but Layne Nixon from the Woodlands got up from 5th the last 200 to hand off in second.

Drew Butler took over the lead for the Woodlands as 5 teams remained in the hunt for the national title. He was challenged with 600m to go and he responded by opening up a 15 meter lead with 1 remaining on his leg. He then continued to stretch that lead for the whole third leg, opening up nearly 50 meters and 6 seconds on the Jackalopes and Fishers in 2nd and 3rd. The lead stayed pretty static for the first 2 laps of the anchor, as Reed Connor carried the stick for the Woodlands. Drew Shield, a 4:08 1600 runner and the Fishers anchor, pulled away from the Jackalopes’ anchor with 2 to go and began to bear down on Connor. With 200 left he had brought the lead down to 25 meters but he could get no closer as Connor kicked it in and held off the late charge. Connor would run 4:16 on the anchor to Shields’ 4:14 and the Woodlands took home the national title in 17:26.58. Fishers was 5 seconds back in 17:31.67. The Jackalopes TC held on for third place and Hudson HS ran 4th from the unseeded section in 17:41.32.

The Woodlands (TX) finished first in Saturday's initial event, which began while some fans were still celebrating the previous night's national record in the boys 2-mile.

Jackalopes Track Club (Pinckney, MI), came to Greensboro hoping to improve on last year's third-place finish. But the day – or, at least, the morning – belonged to the Woodlands foursome of Michael Golden, Layne Nixon, Drew Butler and Reed Connor, who won with a time of 17:26.58. Butler and Connor are juniors, wile Nixon and Golden are seniors.

Second place went to the Fishers (IN) High School squad, consisting of Cale Allen, Alex Shields, Tyler Stegman and Drew Shields. The same outfit took second place at last month's Indiana high school meet. The Hoosier squad posted a time of 17:31.67. The Jackalopes were relegated to third place for a second consecutive year with a time of
17:40.26.

It was a tight race through the first three miles, with Fishers and Pinckney taking turns in the lead. Butler ran a strong final 400 to give the Texans a permanent lead.  Golden praised Butler's work on the anchor leg. “Drew has really impressive kick,” he said. “When we saw he was still with the group over the last 600 meters, we had a feeling he was
going to put it in gear and get it done.”

Butler said the Texans came here with victory in mind. “It’s not often you can come and win a national championship,” he said. “We wanted to stay with the group in the first and second leg. We wanted to pick up the pace with the third leg and then take it home on the anchor leg. We ran it perfectly.”

Girls Summary by Tony Jones

1. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, NY 20:09.87 [5:08.4, 5:05.2, 4:55.4, 5:00.6]
2. Newton Centre, MA 20:37.51
3. Bromfield School, MA 20:40.96

Early to rise was the team from upstate New York, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Newton Centre issued the first challenge with a near sub-5:00 effort from Kelsey Karys . Burnt Hill second leg Molly Pezzulo closed the gap quickly but gave it up just after the half-way point in her leg. The fireworks began once Burnt Hill third leg Sam Roecker took flight after Newton. Roecker made up ground quickly and actually gapped Newton's Madeline Reed. Roecker blazed passed the 1320y mark in 3:39.0 and way out in front of the field. Burnt Hills was back in contention for meet record pace and slightly off national pace when anchor Meaghan Gregory got the stick. Gregory covered the first 880y in 2:26 but had no one to challenge and she essentially ran solo and cruised in for the win.

Afterwards, Coach Zepf said his team had a slight chance at a record going in, but he knew it would be hard on the back end of the relay. The reason being is Burnt Hills is one of the best teams ever, and they moved to #3 all-time in meet history. A modest Roecker added, “Our projection was for me to get [the baton] to Meaghan [Gregory] so we could have a chance to win.”

by Elliot Denman for NSSF

At the stroke of 8:30 a.m, nine girls 4 x mile leadoff runners got Day Three of the Nike Outdoor Nationals off to a quick start.

For eight laps, the result remained in doubt. But when Sam Roecker of Burnt Hills Ballston Spa, NY reeled off 4:55.4 on third leg, it was virtually over.

Sophomore Rachael Cyrus led off the Burnt Hills victory in 5:08.4.  Freshman Molly Pezzulo stepped it up to 5:05.2 on mile two. When Roecker was done, it was left to junior anchor Meaghan Gregory to bring it all home in 20:09.87.     A distant second was Newton Centre Athletics in 20:37.51, with the Bromfield School third in 20:40.96.  Two more New
York teams were next in line – Shenendehowa (20:54.49) and Bronxville (20:56.50.)

Anchor Gregory put it this way: “We had a goal in mind and it feels real good to reach that goal. We are here representing our school and our family and our state – New York State – so this is not just for us.”

Added Cyrus: “We don’t get the opportunity to run distance relays unless we are at a National meet. It says a lot about our teamwork to come here and win…even though we are
not used to running these races.”

Second-section winner North Rockland, NY (21:01.71) wound up seventh over-all in the combined 17-team event.
