Rosa twins lead WWN, but #3 man Tyler Corkedale is key to victory as he picks up six positions in the last 1000 meters. North Allegheny PA shocks with 3rd place finish.

Tyler Corkedale was struggling to regain his fitness and his confidence after an early season injury sidelined the West Windsor-Plainsboro North senior. But he never stopped believing that he would regain his form and once again become a difference maker at the front of his teams attack. He proved to be just that when Corkedale picked the biggest
race of the year to turn in the greatest performance of his career.
With sophomore Joe Rosa blazing to victory in 15:56.7 (No. 17 in course history), and his twin Jim Rosa, 11th in 16:29.7, already in the chute for West Windsor North , Corkedale picked off more than a half dozen runners over the final 1,000 meters and crossed the line 16th in 16:36.3 to help secure a 71-75 victory over runner-up Don Bosco Prep in battle between New Jersey juggernauts at the second Nike Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
West Windsor North and Don Bosco captured the two automatic qualifying spots into Nike Cross Nationals finals at Portland Meadows in Oregon Dec. 6.
While the Rosa twins were doing what was expected up front, Corkedale’s dramatic final surge, which included passing Don Bosco’s No. 2 runner, Rob Molke, turned out to be the difference.
``I just tried to get as many guys as I could,’’ said Corkedale. ``I knew how important every place was and knew the team would need every point to win this.''
Corkedale has come back strong from an early September muscle spasm that pushed back his season debut to Oct. 4. ``It was frustrating, but I knew if I kept working hard I could get back to where I needed to be to help this team win.’’
While the finishes by West Windsor North, No. 1 in the Northeast and No. 4 in the U.S.,and Don Bosco, No. 2 in the Northeast and No. 8 in the nation, were predicted, the third-
place finish by North Allegheny Pa was the shock of the meet. North Allegheny, third in its state AAA championship meet on Nov. 1 behind North Penn and LaSalle, finished just 8
points in back of Don Bosco. North Allegheny, ranked No. 9 in the Northeast, finished 39 points in front of US#23 Danbury Conn and 83 points in front of sixth place North Penn Pa, which came into the race ranked No. 10 in the country.
North Allegheny’s surprising and impressive showing will force meet organizers to consider it for one of the at-large bids into the Nike National championship race. At-
large bids are expected to be announced Sunday.
The WWN-Don Bosco showdown was a rematch of last week’s NJSIAA Meet of Champions, won by West Windsor North, 41-59. But in that race, Don Bosco had three runners go down in a pile up 300 meters into the start and never really had a chance. So this was an opportunity for revenege and redemption for Don Bosco.
But instead West Windsor North reaffirmed its status as the Beast of the Northeast.
``We knew they’d be coming after us after losing, but we knew if we could run the way we did last week we’d be fine,’’ said Corkedale.
Corkedale said that West Windsor North's 3-4-5-6 runners are always changing places with one another. ``Each week we seem to a have a different guy that steps up and
is feeling good,’’ said Corkedale. ``Last week it was Ryan (Sleeper), so this week I guess it was my turn.’’
West Windsor North coach Brian Gould praised the race by Corkedale. ``That was the best race he’s ever run,’’ said Gould. ``He had tunnel vision out there and went after everyone in front of him. Honor is in the effort and Ty showed what that’s all about today.’’
Gould also singled out the junior Jon Squeri, No. 4 for the team and 31st overall in 16:59.6 as being instrumental. Squeri didn’t score for West Windsor North at the M of C.
``This is a tough and hilly course, but Jon’s is a tough runner who wears people down and I knew this course would be perfect for him,’’ said Gould. ``He fought his way every step
and came through with a gutsy race for us.’’
Rosa, who led from the wire-to-wire, was happy to make a return trip to the winner’s circle. He was third in the NJ Group 3 race and second at the NJ M of C the last two weeks. He had been undefeated until the Group 3 race. ``It’s nice to finally win again after getting destroyed by Tyler Udland (Millburn) the last two weeks,’’ said Rosa. ``I like controlling the race up front and setting the pace and was able to make a move on the blind turn at the top of that back hill and get away a little.’’
West Windsor North isn’t content with just going to nationals. ``Just going out there and enjoying the ride isn’t the honorable thing to do,’’ said Corkedale. ``We’re not running to get any other place except first.’’
Don Bosco is headed back to Oregon for the second straight year. Last year it qualified as an at-large team and placed 10th at nationals. ``We’re a little disappointed because we lost by just four points,’’ said Don Bosco senior Leighton Spencer, second in 16:07.6 ``We wanted to beat them after losing at the M of C, but to go back to nationals for the second straight year is an accomplishment that we’re proud of.’’
North Allegheny took a seven and half hour bus ride from the suburbs of Pittsburgh to prove it was better than its third place finish at its state meet. It proved its point.
``We didn’t want to have our season end that way,’’ said senior captain Pat Morgan. ``So we told our coach (Jim LeDonne) that we wanted to take a shot at this and show just how strong of a team we have. I know there are probably a lot of people here wondering who the heck we are. But knew we could run like this and we expected to turn people’s heads.’’
North Allegheny, led by Ryan Gil’s 14th place finish in 16:32.3, was able to put a scare into West Windsor North and Don Bosco because of superior pack running, jamming its top five into a 32 second spread.
``It’ll be a much better bus ride home tonight than it was at our state meet,’’ said LeDonne.
Who knows, maybe the next time North Allegheny travels it will be on a plane to Oregon? Stay tuned!
