3. Central Catholic, OR –

The Rams ran the Mount Hood Conference Relays on Wednesday 9/6, spreading their top runners through three different 4-man relay squads. On a low-key day, a game David Douglas HS squad came out on top, but Central Catholic was clearly looking forward to the Wilsonville Invite on Saturday. There, the Portland squad won handily, placing six in the top 10 and scoring 21 points to an under-manned Lincoln’s 54. On a course comprised of flat athletic fields and rolling, narrow trails, the Rams put up an impressive 37 second compression from 1 to 6. Projected front runners Luke Wiltshire, Sam Wotipka and Musa Ahmed sat out with minor illness or injury.

4. Flathead, MT –

The Flathead boys defended—barely—their home turf against yet another strong team from Spokane, WA. This one, the North Central Indians from Washington’s 3A classification, nearly knocked off the Braves at their own invitational and succeeded in toppling NW#9 Big Sky’s team. Flathead’s top two of Seth Grossman (3rd- 16:31) and Carl Nystuen (4th - 16:40) made the difference, fronting a pair of North Central harriers only steps behind. North Central then put two more ahead of Flathead’s third, before a trio Braves sealed the win for the home team. Only 35 seconds between 1 and 5 here, but the gap from 2 to 3 almost doomed Flathead.

5. Seattle Prep, WA –

The Seattle Prep boys were a late entry into the Edmonds Invite, a flighted race with teams split across fields designated for #1, #2/3, #4/5, and #6/7 runners. The meet winner is determined by adding up the combined times of each team’s top five. The Panthers had what Coach John Robertson called “a great day. [We] ran about as well as we could have, winning all the flights but one.” They expected stiffer competition from NW#6 Lake Stevens, but Lake Stevens’ distance ace, junior Joey Bywater, did not race. Seattle Prep’s stud, senior Max O'Donoghue-McDonald was in the mix however, and pulled away smoothly to win the #1s race. SP’s second and third men placed 3rd and 7th in their flight, but the rest of the team nailed the team win, going 1-2 in the remaining two flights. SP’s combined time was a 56:39, nearly a minute clear of their closest competitors. For comparison sake, the 2004 edition of this race was won by an Eisenhower (Yakima) squad that ran a time of 56:16. That team went on to a 9th place finish at the inaugural NTN meet.

6. Lake Stevens, WA –

Lake Stevens competed at the Edmonds Invite against NW#5 Seattle Prep, but did so without their #1 runner, 9:04 2-miler Joey Bywater (achilles injury). Apparently missing their #3 as well, the Vikings came home a disappointing seventh in the overall team standings, almost two and a half minutes behind SP.

7. Jesuit, OR –

On Thursday 9/7, a portion of the huge Jesuit team ran at the Canby Invitational, and lost to host Canby High School. The Crusaders, however, held out their top five in anticipation of the Capital Invitational in Olympia, Washington. Another flighted competition, this one divides teams up by class year, and runs sections for freshman through seniors. There is no scoring, making team comparisons on the 2.33 mile course difficult. Junior Brian Manning led the way for Jesuit, with a 12:02, followed by senior Sam Larson (12:24) and jr Peter Maag (12:27). Combining the Junior and Senior races, the Crusaders had a 1-5 split of only 30 seconds, with only another 4 sec back to #6. Their combined time for runners 1 through 5 was 61:55, which left them 34 seconds slower than the unranked but clearly powerful Gig Harbor boys.

8. Borah, ID –

At the Silverwood Coaster Classic—a cross country meet run at an amusement park—the Borah boys defended their NW#8 ranking by turning back a strong Lake City squad, 39 to 74. The Lions continue to rely on their solid 1-2 punch of Sawyer Bosch and Sean Huey, who placed 2nd and 3rd at Silverwood, and led a contingent of 5 Borah runners into the top 13. Their 1-5 split was just over a minute on the 3.1 mile course.

9. Big Sky, MT –

The Big Sky Eagles ran into an ambush in Kalispell, MT. They no doubt anticipated a strong race from NW#4 Flathead, but they were also handily beaten by unranked North Central, traveling over from Spokane, WA. Their #1, Hunter Nelson, waged a battle up front with Lynn Reynolds of Dillon, but they went all the way back to 19th (and almost a minute later) for their second and third runners.

10. Hermiston, OR –

The Hermiston Bulldogs, hosting their own invitational, were nearly another victim of a Washington team traveling out of state. The Richland Bombers tied Hermiston through the first five runners, and only a gutsy run by Hermiston’s sixth man (John Larson) saved the day. Richland placed three runners ahead of Hermiston’s top two, including race winner Tyler Noland (16:33).

GIRLS

- NW#2 West Valley AK defeated in Anchorage after their top runner collapses mid-race
- Capital Invite shows NW#1 Gig Harbor and NW#3 Jesuit to be very close
- NW#4 Billings Senior and NW#10 Borah lose to unranked teams at separate invites

Ranked Teams

1. Gig Harbor, WA –

The girls from Gig Harbor met the NW#3 Jesuit Crusaders at the Capital Invite in Olympia, WA, but, because this was a flighted meet separated by class, they did not race head-to-head. Running in the senior race, Kesslee Payne led the way for the Tides, recording a 13:45 on the 2.33 mile course. After that, it was a sharp dropoff to 2nd and 3rd best times for Gig Harbor, with a 14:34 from Anna Kalbrener in the junior race, and 14:36 from Amanda Andrews in the senior race. Tides coach Patty Ley was upbeat about the results, but acknowledged the strength of the Jesuit pack. “Our girls ran well – actually much stronger for our top four than on the same course in 2004, but...Jesuit ran extremely well.” She was also hopeful that a straight-up team race would bring her pack tighter, and knows they’ll get that chance soon enough.

2. West Valley, AK –

The West Valley girls knew they’d have their hands full with West Anchorage at the huge Adidas/Lynx Invitational in Anchorage, but they thought they’d at least get to face them with #1 Crystal Pitney leading the way. She did—for two-thirds of the race—and then inexplicably collapsed. “Something happened and she broke down and collapsed on the course. It wasn’t because she had blown out a knee or her ankles or legs gave out,” West Valley coach Doug Herron told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, “It’s something that’s tough to deal with because she’s an integral part of the team. We need her to be successful.” Pitney’s teammates rallied past their fallen leader and placed four in the top 10 (including 4-5-6), but had to go back to 28th place for their 5th runner, which wasn’t enough to turn back a West Anchorage team every bit as tough as advertised. Juneau-Douglas High School also slipped by the Wolfpack, tying them through five, and then beating West Valley with the deciding 6th runner.

3. Jesuit, OR –

Like the Jesuit boys, the Jesuit girls opened at the Canby Invitational 9/7 with a less-than–complete squad. Holding out their top 3 girls, they still won handily with 20 points, and then prepped for the Capital Invite on 9/9. There, they established themselves as one of the teams to truly be reckoned with in the US this year. Based on times in the class-divided flight meet, the Jesuit girls had seven in front of NW#1 Gig Harbor’s fourth runner, and 9 in front of Gig’s 5th. Although the results were not head-to-head, they were impressive nonetheless. Jesuit’s combined time for their top-five runners across class was 73:11, well up on Gig Harbor’s 73:52.

The Billings Senior girls traveled to the home of the always-dangerous (and currently undefeated) Campbell County girls for the annual Gillette Invitational in Wyoming. Billings Senior packed four runners into the top 10 to offset Campbell County's three, but unranked Campbell County managed to upset the Broncs with depth and the home course advantage, 25-31.

5. Boise, ID –

With western wildfires causing air quality problems for much of Idaho and Montana, Boise’s regularly-scheduled meet was cancelled. Boise coach Dave Mills hastily assembled a meet in the hills of Boise for Saturday 9/9/06. He sent the following report: “As you are probably aware, the DEQ has declared a Red Alert for air quality throughout much of our state, because of the forest fires. As a result, many activities have been cancelled, not the least of which has been practices and cross country meets. After having a Thursday meet cancelled, Boise High threw together a meet held on Saturday in the Boise Foothills. Four schools showed up but there were only two complete teams, Boise and Eagle. Boise won both team races 23 to 33 in the girls and 18 to 39 in the boys. The course was a very difficult 5K with the first 3000 meters uphill, the last 1K on switchbacks. Anne Lovelace of Boise won the girls race in 23:20 and Nick Bolinder of Boise won the boys race in 19:17. Given the difficulty of the course subtracting 4 min from the girls times and 3 min from the boys times gives and idea of the efforts on a more reasonable course."

The Siuslaw girls competed in the Road, Lake and Dune race in Reedsport, OR 9/9, with Coach Chris Johnson reporting that only one other team fielded a complete squad and he held out 3 of his top 5 runners. A thousand feet of soft sand dunes in the middle of the race made for what Coach Johnson referred to as “very, very slow times.” Meet results were not provided.

9. Thomas Jefferson, WA –

The Thomas Jefferson boys and girls ran the Berthusen 15k relays, a five-person relay through wooded trails in which each runner completes a 3000 meter leg. Teams are divided into relays of 3 boys and 2 girls per team, making it difficult to draw any NTN conclusions from the Raiders' efforts this week. These notes are drawn from the team’s posting on www.athletic.net:

Thomas Jefferson's team # 1 runs 53:11 finishing 2nd and 1:27 faster than 2005 and :27 faster than 2004. Burlington - Edison won in a course record time 52:54.8. (old record 52:58.7 Squailicum 2003). TJ Team #1 Senior Justin Stipe 10:26. senior Kenna Patrick 10:33, senior Adam Kollgaard 10:38, junior Cassidy Robey 11:38, freshman Jeff Baklund 9:56. Patrick's time is the first TJ girl to run under 11 min on this course for the three years TJ has competed in the Bethusen Co-Ed relays. Sophomore Vanessa Bennum runs the second fastest time by a TJ girl running 11:20. Cassidy Robey's 11:38 is the 4th fastest TJ time behind Kenna Patrick's 04 time of 11:31.
