1. Mead, WA 

The Mead boys impressed mid-week with a 15-point quad meet victory over Greater Spokane League rivals Gonzaga Prep, Rogers, and East Valley, but then found themselves squarely out-run by NW#2 Ferris at the Highlander Invitational. A flighted meet with teams split according to academic class and runners scored through each team’s top four (instead of five), the Highlander Invite saw the Ferris seniors lay down a dominant performance, dropping 14 points to Mead’s 51. The Panthers’ top gun, Taylor Nepon, did not compete, but is rumored to be on the mend and may toe the line for the big GSL tri-meet showdown with Ferris and North Central, Wednesday 9/20. Mead did pick up the win in the sophomore division, with 31 to Cheney’s 95.

2. Joel Ferris, WA

Ferris looked strong at their own Greater Spokane League quad meet with Central Valley, University and Shadle Park, before shifting into a higher gear with the eye-opening run of their seniors at the Highlander Invite. The top duo of David Hickerson and Cam Quackenbush set the tone with a 1-2 finish, and the rest of their teammates followed, going 1-2-5-6-12 in the senior race, scoring 14 to Mead’s 51, and orchestrating a 34 second 1-5 split on the 2.5 mi course. The Saxons also took 2nd in the Junior Division and 1st in the Freshman race.

The Flathead Braves continued their winning ways, recording an 8-point victory over tough in-state rival Bozeman at the Great Falls Invitational. It was the second week in a row Flathead escaped with a narrow victory, but they keep finding a way to win. Normal top-two Grossman and Nystuen ended up 1st and 4th here, with 1:03 separating their 1-5 pack.

The Panthers had a low-key week with no major invitationals over the weekend. Nonetheless, they put together an impressive Metro League dual meet win at Lower Woodland Park, where they scored a perfect 15 and a tight 25 second 2-5 split behind front-running Max O’Donoghue-McDonald’s 16:02.

North Central earned a spot in the NW top-10 with a near-upset of NW#4 Flathead at the Flathead Invitational. Last week they returned to Greater Spokane League competition with wins over Mt. Spokane and Lewis & Clark. This week they face their strongest challenge of the season, right in their own backyard. Wednesday brings the GSL tri-meet showdown with NW#1 Mead and NW#2 Ferris, and another chance to show they belong in the top-10.

The Borah boys continued racking up the wins with a strong showing at the small Payette Invitational. Northwest rankings rewcomer Kodiak hinted that they may be sticking around with a strong 20-39 dual meet victory in their last home meet of the season before heading to regionals and states in the next two weeks. Racing against South Anchorage, Kodiak soph Trevor Dunbar broke a 6-year old school record for the Ft. Abercrombie State Park 5K course with his 16:05. The rest of the team wasn’t far behind, going 1-3-4-5-7-9-10 for the win.

10. Gig Harbor, WA

The Gig Harbor boys joined their female Tide teammates in the NW Top 10 this week, after a strong showing at the Capital Invite. They followed that up with a convincing win at the Salt Creek Invite, dropping a 1:02 split for 1-6. Gig Harbor ace Charlie Williams dogged Nathan Hale’s Abdi Hassan to the line for second in 14:34. Early leader Miles Unterreiner was eaten by the pack, but rallied for 4th in 14:47.

1. Jesuit, OR

After upsetting the pre-season form charts with a dominating performance over Gig Harbor at the Capital Invite last week, the Crusaders laid low this week, taking on league rival Southridge in a small dual meet. The girls from Jesuit left no question about their strength this season, sweeping the top five places and sticking all five at 20 minutes or below for 5k. The split from runner #1 Katie Sullivan (19:32.03) to #5 Teresa Makowski (20:00.0) was a clutch 28 seconds. That’s why they’re number 1.

2. Gig Harbor, WA

Despite slipping a spot in the rankings, the Gig Harbor girls returned to form with a confidence-building win at the Salt Creek Invite. They stacked the top three with Tide jerseys, with Kesslee Payne (17:26), Amanda Andrews (17:48) and Anna Kalbrener (17:49) showing the Gig Harbor strength up front. After that trio, however, Gig continues to seek the elusive tight pack that propels teams to the highest level. Their 1:43 gap from 1-5 was more than sufficient here, but will be tested at the Bob Firman Invite.

Bouncing back from their defeat at the hands of a tough Campbell County WY squad, the girls from Billings Senior showed themselves the class of Montana with a win at the Flathead Invite against the top teams in the state. Bridgette Hoenke (3rd- 19:35.74) led the way, before close pairings at 10 and 12 and 17-18—in the span of 25 seconds—closed the deal for the Broncs.

4. Anchorage West, AK

Anchorage West stormed the rankings last week, with a narrow upset of West Valley at the Dimond/Lynx Invite. This week they apparently kept a low profile (with no reported results) in anticipation of a Regional qualifier this weekend, and then another collision with West Valley at the Alaska State Meet September 30th.

5. West Valley, AK

West Valley took a tumble last week after they were defeated by not one, but two Alaska teams at the same meet. Questions remain, however, because Crystal Pitney, West’s top runner, was unable to complete the Dimond/Lynx race after running with the lead pack for much of the competition. The Wolfpack will look to answer those questions, and to even the score, at their Regional and State meets in the next two weeks.

6. Boise, ID

The Boise girls keep reeling off the wins. Despite having regular #5 runner Fiona Wilhelm hampered by a lingering strep throat, they still took the title at the annual Tiger/Grizz Invitational, scoring 34 to Bear Lake’s 49. Their lead trio of Olson, Lovelace, and Salberg laid the groundwork, going 1-2-3 and setting the stage for the strong regional win. With Wilhelm ailing and buried in the field, the Braves had to reach back to frosh Katie Lovelace in 24th (scored as 22nd) for their fifth, a depth issue which could haunt them in larger meets like Bob Firman, where they’ll toe the line next Saturday.

7. Juneau-Douglas, AK

Juneau-Douglas became the third Alaska school in the girl’s NW Top 10 when they slipped past Fairbanks power West Valley on a sixth runner tie-breaker at the Dimond/Lynx Invite last week. Proving that performance (and their ranking) was no fluke, they took the title at the Jack Eddy Classic in Petersburg AK this past weekend. Relying on a drum-tight trio of runners separated by less than two seconds, they easily held off Sitka and stamped themselves as a third team to watch heading into the Alaska State meet on 9/30.

8. Mt. Spokane, WA

In their first real outing of the season (team time trial aside), Mount Spokane had to take on a North Central team hot off a win at the Silverwood Coaster Classic. Mt. Spokane responded to the league meet challenge with a 1-2-5 finish that effectively ended the hopes of the upset-minded North Central runners. Then it was on to the Highlander Invite, where they apparently held out most of their top runners and placed 4th in the Combined Girls race.

9. Siuslaw, OR 

After a low key opening at the Road, Lake and Dune Run on 9/9, Siuslaw came out in style (if not full force) at the North Bend Invitational on 9/12. There, still holding out one runner, they went 2-3-4-5-8-9 to secure an easy mid-week win. Over the weekend they further staked their claim as one of the top teams in the Northwest with a second win, this time at the Molalla Invitational. At Molalla they inserted Sierra Lee, their number 1 runner, who led the team to a 4-5-7-11-12-14 showing, and a 1:12 split for 1-6.

With the Woodbridge Invitational looming, Thomas Jefferson ran only a partial squad consisting of JV runners at a dual meet 9/13 versus Auburn Riverside. According to DyestatCal, at Woodbridge, the massive invitational in California, “Thomas Jefferson of Washington, ranked 10th in the NTN Northwest Region, split up its team members across various races and placed 13th overall by team time.” Compiled individual results for TJ were not available.
