Class 4 Boys - HL #1 SLUH withstood a serious challenge from Parkway West (St. Louis) to repeat as 4A boy's team champion. Parkway West appeared to casual observers to have won the title early, as they were led by Eric Fernandez in first, and had two other runners in before SLUH's #1. But SLUH has won with depth all year, and a :34 1-5 second split for SLUH vs. 1:42 for Parkway West spelled the difference. SLUH won with 113 points to Parkway West's 118. Kickapoo (Springfield) was third with 143 and HL # 6 Lee's Summit West was fourth with 168 points. The team scores don't necessarily reflect the closeness of the race, as SLUH (16:50), Parkway West (16:45) and Kickapoo (16:53) all ran under 17:00 for an fast average on this course.

Individually the race was a blazer. Fernandez blasted through the 2 mile mark of the hilly course at 9:58 with the pack in tow. Fernandez eventually built his lead to a 15:50 win over the Oak Hills Golf Center 5k. Rick Elliot (Kickapoo) ran 15:58 for second, holding off Matt Schwab (Francis Howell North, St. Charles, 15:59). Darwin Price of Normandy, a noted middle distance prospect, was fourth at 16:07, with Sam Masters (Hickman, Columbia) fifth at 16:09.

Class 4 Girls - The Lee's Summit West ladies had flown under the radar all season long, despite wins at the KC Metro, Small 6 Suburban Conference, and KC Sectional meets. At state, the Titans moved way up on everyone's scope, as coach Dave Denny's squad scored an impressive 73 points and a 20:06 average (fastest of the meet by over 10 seconds) to win the 4A title. LSW's well balanced team put in all five runners before any other squad finished their top four. Eureka was second with 106 points, Rockwood Summit third with 127 and Cape Girardeau Central fourth with 144. HL # 4 Jefferson City was fifth with 159 points.

Individually, Diane Robinson (Parkway Central, St. Louis) put on a show, blasting the field with an 18:39, by far the fastest time of the day, and the only sub 19:00 of the meet. Robinson simply put on a clinic of running over the hill course. Hilary Orf (Marquette) was a strong second at 19:16, edging Aimee Bonte (Rockwood Summit, 19:18). Courtney Wood (Neosho) was fourth at 19:29, while Brittany Tate led Lee's Summit West in fifth at 19:34.

Class 3 Boys - The big question in this race was would HL # 9 Potosi's front running strength be enough to hold off West Plains vaunted depth? The answer turned out to be: yes, but it was oh-so-close. Potosi scored low points early, of the individual win by Jacob Swearingen (16:00), with Joe Skelton fifth (16:25) and two others in the top 25. But West Plains was countering with Phillip Palomino (8th 16:41), and a 1:01 1-5 split. Potosi put four runners in before West Plains third, but West Plains had all seven runners in before Potosi's fifth. In the end, Potosi won with 78 points, with West Plains second with 87. Notre Dame (Cape Giraredeau) was third with 104 points and Branson fourth with 168.

Individually, Swearingen pulled away from the pack for a solid triumph, with Adam Behnke (Lutheran South, St. Louis) second at 16:12, with Chris Bell (Branson) third at 16:18. Hayden Legg (Mexico) was fourth at 16:24.

Class 3 Girls - In another pack vs. front-runners confrontation, the # 5 HL West Plains girls won with 74 points over St. Genevieve (90) with Branson a close third (92). Notre Dame de Sion (Kansas City, 120) edged Ladue Horton Watkins (125) for fourth. St. Genevieve put two runners in the top ten, and Branson bracketed West Plains #1 with their top two, but West Plains put all five scorers in before any other team finished four, and featured a 61 second 1-5 spread.

Natalie Todd (Horton Watkins) finished an undefeated season with a 19:05 triumph. Sarah While (Potosi) finished second at 19:14, with Alyssa Allison (Festus) third at 19:31. Erin Huddleston (Branson) was fourth at 19:45 with defending champion Brittani Johnson making a nice comeback from early season injuries to lead West Plains in fifth at 19:49.

Class 2 Boys - Herculaneum, just off the Mississippi River, has a long tradition of state championships running, and 2007 just added to that tradition. Herculaneum dominated the team race, putting five runners in before runner-up Smithville put in two. Herculaneum scored 67 points to win, with Smithville (115) edging Osage (115) for second on the sixth runner pusher rule. Catholic (Springfield) was fourth with 134.

Individually Mat Storms (O' Hara, Kansas City) lit out and simply demolished the field, running 16:34 in a show of strength. Jason Barry (Osage) was second at 16:51, with Zach Lhamon (17:05) and Matt Wilkinson (17:08) running 3-4 for Ft. Zumwalt East. Adam Prahlow (Lutheran North, St. Louis) was fifth at 17:09.

Class 2 Girls - Herculaneum made it a double with the 2A girls title, scoring a 69 to 90 win over Smithville. Herculaneum showed great front end strength with two in the top ten (as did Smithville) and four in the top twenty-five. Mountain Grove was third with 114 and St. Peter's Lutheran fourth with 145.

In the individual race, Lilly Fisher (Pembroke Hill, Kansas City) moved up through the field to take the lead about halfway through and ran to a 20:10 triumph. Eileen Schweiss (Herculaneum) was second at 20:25, ahead of a tight pack of Megan Kowalik (Wright City, 20:29) and Kelsie Hutsell (Willow Springs 20:32). Emily Haberstroh (St. Peters Lutheran) was fifth at 20:44

Class 1 Boys - Dominating. There is no other way to describe the performance that College Heights (Joplin) put on in the 1A boy's race. College Heights scored 17 points and had a team average of exactly one minute ahead of second place West Platte (76 points). Third went to Lone Jack (154), while Valley Park (163) edged Saxony Lutheran (167) for third.

Ethan Beaver led College Heights, winning in 16:51, with teammates Caleb Hoover (17:00), Josh Carter (17:16) and Alan Good (17:20) following in 2-3-4. Sean Freehan (Lone Jack) was fifth in 17:21. Trenton Morris finished out College Heights scoring in seventh at 17:39.

Class 1 Girls - Penney dominated the girls 1A race, scoring 27 points, and putting all five scorers in the top eighteen. College Heights (Joplin) was second with 60, Alton third (104) and Cass-Midway (156) edged Marion County (162) for fourth.

Emily Beaver (College Heights) won the race, running 20:13 for a solid win. Jordan Esry led Penney in second, at 20:28. Ashley Wolkomir (Lee's Summit Community Christian) was third at 20:36, with Ashley Flook (Penney) fourth at 20:49 and Taylor Rivera (Miller) fifth at 21:00.
