Class AA Final Report

After a stormy day of prelims, the clouds cleared, the humidity started to drop. The 2007 edition of the AA State Track and Field Championships were about to take shape. Cahokia lead all teams with 10 qualifiers with neighborhood rival East St. Louis-Senior right on their tail with 9.

FIELD EVENTS

LONG JUMP
1. Troy Dorris (SR) Bolingbrook 23’ 7 ¾”
2. Clyde Young (SR) Cahokia 22’ 9 ½”
3. Roger Jones (JR) Belleville East 22’ 6 ¾”
Not many changes between places happened after prelims. Troy Dorris took control of this event and never let up winning convincingly. Young scored 8 points for his team.

TRIPLE JUMP
1. Troy Dorris (SR) Bolingbrook 50’ 9”
2. Ty Kirk (JR) Rolling Meadows 47’ 1 ¾”
3. Earnest Green (SR) Chicago St. Rita 46’ 9 ¼”
Dorris defends his title by over 3 feet!!! Most of the prelim marks did not change. In the final 3 jumps, Dorris jumped 50’ 2” just for kicks.

HIGH JUMP
1. Major Clay (SR) Springfield Lanphier 6’ 9”
2. Phillip Thomas (JR) Alton 6’ 8”
3. Matt Newman (SO) Buffalo Grove 6’ 7”
What was thought to be a coronation for Major Clay were completely reversed. 5 jumpers remained after clearing 6’ 6”. Clay, Thomas, and the event’s surprise Matt Newman remained after clearing 6’ 7”. In the end Clay repeated his title from last year.

POLE VAULT
1. Mitchell Erickson (JR) Chicago Hts Marian Catholic 16’ 9”
2. Joe Noonan (SR) Frankfort Lincoln-Way East 16’ 6”
3. Andy Ryan (SR) Rolling Meadows 16’ 3”
This event did not disappoint. Unknown at the beginning of the year, Mitchell Erickson can now be known as AA State Pole Vault champ. Erickson won a fierce dual over Noonan, Ryan and Sam Kranz, who bowed out at 16’. The sky is the limit for Erickson, who could be flirting with the state record this time next year.

SHOT PUT
1. Adam Ruiz (SR) Mascoutah 59’ 5”
2. Colin Madison (SR) Villa Park Willowbrook 58’ 3 ½”
3. Jason Seaman (SR) Mahomet-Seymour 58’ ¾”
First surprise of the afternoon. Ruiz’s prelim throw withstood the challenge of defending champ Colin Madison to take away his crown. Madison jumped from 7th in the prelims to runner-up status.

DISCUS
1. Dan Block (SO) Roselle Lake Park 183’ 4”
2. Brett Einbecker (JR) Aurora Waubonsie Valley 175’ 8”
3. Ryan Asta (SR) Barrington 175’ 7”
Another prelim mark that stood up. Even with an injured throwing hand, Dan Block’s mark held to win a state championship and set an AA record. This sets up a nice rivalry next year between Block and runner up Brett Einbecker.

Team Scores after Field events:
1. Bolingbrook 20
2. Roselle Lake Park 18.5
2. Springfield Lanphier 16
3. Rolling Meadows 15
5. Lincoln-Way East 13
Cahokia 12
East St. Louis – Senior 5

4 x 800 METER RELAY
1. Elmhurst York 7:49.37
2. Wheaton-Warrenville South 7:49.90
3. Winnetka New Trier 7:49.96
What was thought to be a shoot out between 2 of the top 3 teams in the nation turned out to be a tactical battle between 8 quartets. Brad Tsida of New Trier led at the first exchange around 1:55. 4 teams were right behind led by York and Prospect. Glenbard South and its first man Brandon Matthies looked hopelessly out of the hunt 4 seconds behind.
York, New Trier, and Wheaton-Warrenville South continued to trade off the lead until the final exchange. York’s Nick Kuczwara received the baton at 5:53, with Wheaton South, New Trier, Sandburg and an on charging Glenbard South closing in… but that was all she wrote. Nick the “Quick” anchored in 1:56.4 to lead York to its second relay crown in the last 3 years. His finish was similar to that of Roger Billhardt two years ago. He ran just hard enough for the 10 points.

4 x 100 METER RELAY
1. Springfield Lanphier 41.54
2. East St. Louis – Senior 41.58
3. Cahokia 42.03
Big upset here. The all junior quartet from Springfield surprised pre race favorites East St Louis and Cahokia. Willie Thomas held off Javuaghn Tabbs to clinch the crown.

1. Springfield Lanphier 26
2. Bolingbrook 20
3. Cahokia 19
East St. Louis – Senior 13

3200 METER RUN
1. Evan Jager (SR) Algonquin Jacobs 8:52.33
2. Chris Derrick (JR) Naperville Neuqua Valley 8:54.64
3. Dan Chenoweth (SR) Geneseo 8:57.27
4. Kevin Havel (JR) Arlington Hts Hersey 9:06.29
64 – 2:12 – 3:19 – 4:28 – 5:36 – 6:45 – 7:50 ---
This race did not disappoint. Jager led the first 2 laps before Chenoweth took over. Chris Derrick and Kevin Havel followed closely behind in a quick 4:28 for the first 1600. Dan Chenoweth started to pull away surging over the next 1200 meters dropping Havel from the pack, but Jager and Derrick were there drooling with 400 to go. Jager turned up an extra gear over the final lap to capture his 3rd state crown.

110 METER HIGH HURDLES
1. Tyler Sipes (JR) Bloomington 14.01
2. Artavious Kizer (SR) East St. Louis-Senior 14.08
3. Josh Gist (SR) South Holland Thornwood 14.20
WOW! The king is dead…long live the king! The indoor IPTT champ Sipes shocked the O’Brien Stadium crowd with a huge upset over defending champ Kizer.

3. East St. Louis – Senior 21

100 METER DASH
1. Demarcus Brooks (JR) Springfield Southeast 10.57 w
2. Raymon Parker (SR) Romeoville 10.61
3. Jacob Mitchell (JR) Springfield Lanphier 10.68
Demarcus Brooks defends his title and has eyes on a 3-peat. Brooks holds off Parker and Mitchell. Lanphier’s Mitchell scores some big team points for his team while Jerdo Williams of Cahokia finishes 7th.

800 METER RUN
1. Mat Smoody (JR) Palatine 1:52.57
2. Sam Megli (SR) Sterling 1:54.15
3. Justin Helpingstine (SR) Salem 1:54.44
This was Smoody’s race. He took control after a 55 second first lap. Mat took off and passed the 600 in 1:24.9. His strength took over and won convincingly by a second and a half…Kuczwara did not look like he had a lot left, but still finished 5th.

1. Springfield Lanphier 33
2. Cahokia 26
3. Bolingbrook 25
4. East St. Louis – Senior 21

4 x 200 METER RELAY
1. Cahokia 1:25.98
2. East St. Louis – Senior 1:26.25
3. Springfield Lanphier 1:26.31
The second battle between Cahokia and ESL – Senior goes to Cahokia. Earnest Winters anchors the Comanches to under 1:26. The team battle starts to get tight after this race.

1. Springfield Lanphier 40
2. Cahokia 36
3. East St. Louis – Senior 29

400 METER DASH
1. Artavious Kizer (SR) East St. Louis – Senior 47.31
2. Darien Donald (SO) Cahokia 47.57
3. Alex Jackson (SR) St. Charles East 47.66
Donald gets second for the second year in a row. Kizer, running only his 4th open 400 of the year, makes Roscoe Whitfield look like a genius by running the fastest quarter in 2 years. With that win, the Flyers get closer to the lead.

1. Cahokia 44
2. East St. Louis – Senior 41
3. Springfield Lanphier 40

300 METER INTERMEDIATE HURDLES
1. Kraig Appleton (SO) East St Louis-Senior 37.57
2. Tyler Sipes (JR) Bloomington 37.74
3. Andre Townsend (SR) Hillcrest 37.96
Second win in a row for East St. Louis improving their chances for a team title. Appleton wins the title in only his first year in the event. Sipes finishes a strong second.

1. East St. Louis- Senior 51
2. Cahokia 44
3. Springfield Lanphier 40

1600 METER RUN
1. Tom Robbins (SR) Wilmette Loyola 4:10.46
2. Evan Jager (SR) Algonquin Jacobs 4:12.35
3. Cory Nanni (SR) Normal West 4:12.68
4. Mike Fry (SR) Elmhurst York 4:13.40
Robbins splits: 62 – 2:07 – 2:39 (1000m) – 3:12 – 4:10
Robbins became the favorite after opting for only the 1600 after dropping the 800. Nanni and Jager took the pace out in a quick 61 seconds. Robbins joined them at 800 meters…and then he took off running a 32 second 200 to 1000m…Robbins finishes off with a 58 quarter….Jager made a move on him with 250m to go but it was too late. Great race…interesting to see what happens in some of the post –season races if these 3 meet up again (Midwest Distance Gala???).

200 METER DASH
1. Darren Patterson (SR) Waukegan 21.87
2. Demarcus Brooks (JR) Springfield Lanphier 21.89
3. Earnest Winters (JR) Cahokia 22.00
This race was crucial for Cahokia to repeat. They had two runners in the final and needed as many points as possible. Individually, Darren Patterson inched by 100 m champ Demarcus Brooks and defending champ Earnest Winters. More importantly, Cahokia (with Jerdo Williams finishing 6th) scored 11 points setting up a final race for the team title. Lanphier secures a trophy for Coach Mike Garcia with Warnether Banks’ 4th place finish.

1. Cahokia 55
2. East St. Louis – Senior 51
3. Springfield Lanphier 46

4 x 400 METER RELAY
1. East St. Louis Senior 3:13.66 (STATE RECORD)
2. Cahokia 3:16.33
3. Elmhurst York 3:19.02
The Flyers needed to win and have Cahokia finish lower than 4th to take back the team title. It was apparent after the second exchange that this would not happen, with these two powerhouses running alone neck and neck. It was also apparent that the state record would go down….and it did. Using Javaughn Tabbs as the anchor was the push they needed to drop their time 3 seconds from prelims…

1. Cahokia 63
2. East St. Louis – Senior 61
3. Springfield Lanphier 46.

A thrilling team chase down to the last event…Cahokia pulls off their second title in a row for Coach Leroy Milsap.

Congratulations to all coaches and athletes on a great state meet…….!
