Little Cypress-Mauriceville TX sr Drew Bean, the state 4A XC champ (in the 2nd fastest time of the day, wedged between Foot Locker finalists from the 5A race) took over with 2 laps to go in windy conditions, and broke the tape in 9:22.37. Coppell sr Taylor Ray nabbed silver in 9:26.78.

• It's pretty cool. It's something I never thought I would do about two years ago, but I've made a lot of progress since then. It's an amazing feeling to know that I've won such a big meet. It feels good.
• Coming into the race, I wasn’t too worried about time. My game plan was to conserve the 1st mile and then work hard the 2nd mile.
• I was looking to run a little faster, under 9:15, but the wind was strong. When the first 400 was only 71, I took off and split a 69. I was feeling good and rolling, but realized with the wind that it would stink to get 6 laps into the race running a killer pace and then come back to everyone. So about mid-race I decided to run a tactical race, and it worked out well for me.
• At about a 600 to go, I took over, and never looked back.
• I’m entered in the 1600 (tomorrow), but I’m going to wake up tomorrow and see how I feel. I have bad allergies and am used to humidity. It’s too dry here.

• I'm so excited I don't know what to do right now. It was part of my strategy to stick with the pack for a while so I didn't use all my energy, but towards the end of the race I was just like, I've got to go.
• It was windy so I stayed behind everyone early and let them block the wind.
• This is my favorite race of the year (she also won last year). It’s a good way to go into District and then to State.
• My goal was to kick well. In junior high I had a great quick, so today I was thinking “kick like in junior high.”
• I had something to prove, because I was sick at Jesuit (Relays on March 24; 6th place at 5:03.00 in a deep 1600 race)
