Boys 55: On tired legs, he is still one fast Guy

After bettering his previous US #1 of 6.31 in Friday's prelims with a 6.30 clocking to advance onto Saturday's finals, it would appear West Charlotte NC sr Trenton Guy Jr. would be ready to drop his national leading time even further on the second day. While Guy Jr. ended up matching his US #1 time in the finals with another 6.30 clocking, it was on another level of performance from his identical time on the day before or his 6.31 win at UNC last Saturday. The sprint star from West Charlotte had a very busy day prior to the finals of the 55 meter dash as he had a great second leg for his team's 4x200 meter relay to put them well out in front en route to their US #2 victory. His second race of the day came in a great battle between Sean Holston VA and himself in the 300 meter dash in which he ended up second with a US #2 time of 34.17. Guy's name was certainly not tarnished by the meet in being associated with one US #1 and two US #2 performances for the weekend. West Charlotte made it a 1-2 sweep in the 55 meter dash as Guy's teammate Edward Alexander clocked a swift time of 6.42 to hold off Manchester VA's Anthony Chesson (6.45) for second place. Alexander ran opening leg for West Charlotte's 4x200 meter relay earlier in the meet.

Girls 55: Providence NC's Glenn wins in out-of-state dominated finals

The finals of the girls' 55 meter dash were dominated by out-of-staters with only two Virginians found in the finals. After posting the fastest time in Friday's prelims at 7.15, Providence NC senior Gabrielle Glenn stayed on top of her game for Saturday's finals with a 7.18 victory. Three sophomores from Maryland took the next three places in a bright sign for the state with McDonogh School's Jameice Decoster (2nd, 7.21), Elizabeth Seton's Dioanna Hayes (3rd, 7.23), and Parkland's Christine Council (4th, 7.30).

Boys 55H: Dutch woos VA spectators with hurdle performances

No national record for Dutch. Spoiled spectators were hoping for the recently new high school national record holder in the 55 meter hurdles (7.07) to do it again for the second week in a row, but it was still quite an event to watch the Clayton NC senior Johnny Dutch compete in the event at Virginia Tech. He still left state champion caliber hurdlers in the dust with his performances and times this past weekend. In Friday's prelims, defending Virginia 2A state champion Ethan Nixon of Brookville found himself in the same heat as Dutch and ended up a very distant second place at 7.68 with Dutch coming out with Friday's fastest at 7.35. Nixon immediately went over to congratulate Dutch after the heat as if he was shaking the hands of a celebrity. In the high school track and field world, Dutch has definitely become quite the celebrity.

Dutch picked it up a notch in Saturday's finals with a 7.18 clocking, which is still faster than any times put than any other hurdlers in the country with the exception of US #2 Josh Hembrough of Michigan at 7.15. R.J. Reynolds of North Carolina had two hurdlers in the top four with Charlton Rolle (2nd, 7.43) and Korel Mack (4th, 7.58).

Girls 55H: Re-run of prelim heat did not tire Watkins from a win

Despite having to compete in an extra round than her fellow competitors in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles (with the exception of Bishop McNamara MD fr Taylor Butler), Menchville VA senior Kali Watkins had no problem claiming a dominant 8.13 win in the finals. The first heat of the prelims for the hurdles had a timing malfunction that was not recognized until after the hurdlers had finished the race. Watkins won the heat, but they had to re-run the heat as Watkins posted her weekend's fastest of 8.10 in the second go around of the trial. A finals qualifier in the 60 meter hurdles last March at Nike Indoor Nationals, Watkins is running faster than she did at this point last year. She finished fourth in the hurdles last year at Tech in which the 60 meter hurdles was contested versus the 55 meter dash in the 2007 meet.

Boys 300: Holston runs US #9 all-time in battle between two of the nation's best

WIth the late entry of Trenton Guy Jr. and West Charlotte NC into the Virginia Tech Invite after scratches allowed both to enter into the once capped off meet, national leader for 300 and 500 meters in Robert E. Lee VA senior Sean Holston would get the needed competition on the banked Tech surface to push him higher up on the US all-time list.

Holston had ran a US #17 all-time performance of 33.94 last March at the Virginia 3A State Meet in a win over NIN and NON 200 meter national champ Charles Clark. He then showed his early season sharpness several weeks ago in running a US #20 all-time clocking of 33.99. Guy came with a personal best a full second slower at 34.99, but with Guy's proven speed in several events, it was expected to be a closer contested. Guy did his part in making it a race with competing in an outside lane to Holston to give the national leader a visual chaser. However, it was apparent as they were coming off the final turn who had clear advantage with Holston powering his way down the homestretch for a US #9 all-time victory of 33.68 with Guy in second with a US #2 time of 34.17.

Holston had hoped to break the meet record of 33.51 held by Lashawn Merritt (US #5 all-time) and become the fastest Virginian ever in the event, but will get another chance to do so this upcoming weekend in an invite 300 meter field on the fast banked track found at the New York Armory. Guy will also be competing in the same race.

Girls 300: Fauquier's Sanford takes it from the "slower" section

Nicole Saunders of Menchville VA looked strong in winning the "fast section" of the 300 meter dash with a 39.66, but Dania Sanford of Fauquier VA looked even stronger in taking the next section with the day's fastest at 39.52. Three of the top five times in the event were produced in Sanford's section with Sanford, McDonogh MD's Jameice Decoster (3rd, 39.90) and Armstrong VA's Cecily Young (5th, 40.26) to bump the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt MD's Elan Hilaire, national freshmen record holder at 400 meters, to sixth place overall. It was a personal best performance for the 2006 VA 3A 400 meter state runner-up Sanford.

Boys 500: Multi-sprinter wipeout in fast section opens the door for others

A wipeout in the third turn (just past 200 meters) of the fast section of the 500 meter dash, which resulted in half of the six competitors in the section to DNF, opened up the event for others to place high in the following sections. Top seed Adrian Browne of Eleanor Roosevelt MD happened to be one of the three victims in the traffic jam. Winner of the top section, Keonta Coleman of Deep Creek, was the least unscathed by the incident to win the section in 1:06.91, but none of the six escaped completely clean. Coleman's time ended up sixth fastest overall. The next section was not any faster than Coleman's time, but sections #3 and #4 produced two top four times each with section #4 winner Miles Walker of Providence NC (1:05.21) having a slightly faster time than section #3 winner Ian Williamson of Green Hope NC (1:05.55) for first place overall in one of the meet's more interesting events thanks to the fast section DNF's.

Girls 500: Takeica Jameson joins twin sister on US all-time 500 list to make possible history?

For lack of time or willingness to search from beginning to end through Jack Shepard's 2007 edition of High School Track, could Takeica Jameson's US #6 all-time 500 meter performance of 1:12.61 this past weekend to join twin sister Tameka Jameson, who ran a US #5 all-time clocking of 1:12.40 last year at Virginia Tech, be the first time siblings and more so twins are ranked on the US all-time list in the same event? If not, it is still quite an impressive and rare performance to see siblings ranked so highly on the national all-time list in a specific event. The University of Miami is very fortunate to land these two very talented seniors.

Jameson had great competition to push her onto the all-time list as she faced off with Uniondale NY's Ashlea McLaughlin, who had the nation's second fastest time this season heading into the weekend at 1:15.02. Both runners went well under that time in Blacksburg. Neither was actually leading 300 meters into the race as Jameson did not seize the lead from Landstown VA's Cierra McGee until they entered the final lap. After Jameson moved to the front, she did not look back or allow McLaughlin to catch her for the US #1 1:12.61 win. McLaughlin maintained her US #2 ranking by clocking a personal best time of 1:13.69 to bump previous US #1 Ebonie Cunningham NC to a US #3 position.

Girls Invitational 600: Slow first 400 meters nixs national record plans, but US #9 all-time for Muhammad

Cardoza NY senior Daillah Muhammad and Eleanor Roosevelt MD senior Tameka Jameson fell well short of their assault on the 1:29.27 national record in the 600 meter dash as a tenative first 400 meters made the race turn tactical instead of a record run. Jameson led Muhammad and the field through 400 meters just under 60 seconds when the current US #1 for 400 meters in Muhammad took charge and put it in another gear for the final lap to win in 1:31.11. Her winning time in Blacksburg ranks her #9 all-time in the event for the third US all-time performance of the meet. Meanwhile, Jameson finished second in 1:32.53 with the US #2 time in the event behind Muhammad. Muhammad would later split an swift 53.0 leg on the 4x400 meter relay.
