Boys Varsity A Report - by Matt Soja

What was supposed to be the biggest individual duel of the day quickly fizzled out in a matter of minutes. Although Brandon Jarrett (St. Benedict’s Academy, NJ), ranked #6 in the nation by Dyestat, sprinted out to the early lead and held it until the bridge about 1200m into the race, he succumbed to his groin injury and immediately stepped off the course. With his biggest challenger gone, Jarrett’s nemesis Doug Smith (Gill St. Bernard’s NJ) took the lead, quickly pulled away from the field, and ran the rest of the race alone. Smith, ranked #13 in the nation, finished in 12:31.9, slightly slower than expected, but he won by almost 12 seconds over Giovanni Signoretti (Smithtown NY). The Jersey harrier said he was disappointed with Jarrett’s misfortune because he had “put so much thought and preparation into this race, only to be let down” by the lack of a head-to-head contest all the way to the finish. Since Jarrett’s school is not a part of the New Jersey association, he cannot run in state competition, so the only other time the two best runners in the Garden State will face each other will be at Footlocker Regionals, provided of course Jarrett is healthy by then.

As expected, the team competition turned out to be a very tight three-way battle between three regionally ranked teams, Shaker NY, Smithtown NY, and Merrimack NH. But it was the lowest-ranked of the three, Smithtown, which pulled the surprise win with 71 points over Merrimack’s 78 and Shaker’s 83. Smithtown won thanks to its strong front runners, with Signoretti finishing 2nd, Brendan Connell 8th, and August Oetting 12th. They averaged 13:18.7. That will vault them over Shaker in this week’s New York rankings as the latter team remains without a major invitational victory this season. Merrimack’s performance was especially impressive because it was the only team in the race to have their entire top five under 13:40, but this depth was just a few points short of defeating Smithtown. However, their regional 6th place ranking is in jeopardy because CBA and Morris Hills ran slightly better times later in the afternoon.
