Boys Varsity F Report - by Matt Soja

When two weeks ago, Warwick Valley NY and Don Bosco Prep NJ won their respective divisions at the Warwick Mania meet, the New Yorkers had a significantly better team average, so they were considered the favorites when the two teams finally clashed head-to-head. But reality quickly nullified these predictions, and on Saturday afternoon, it quickly became apparent that Bosco came out on top. Although WV had a solid pack, putting its entire top 5 under 13:25 and into the top 25 in the race, it was the spectacular performance of Bosco’s top harriers that gave them the win. Rob Molke’s 12:41.0 gave him third place and Anthony Belgiovine’s 12:54.0 gave him eighth. Since WV did not have anyone in the top ten, and the third, fourth and fifth runners from each team finished close to each other, Bosco won this affair by a comfortable margin of 79-93.

The team averages were 13:07.0 for Bosco and 13:11.7 for WV. The New Jerseyans were not even ranked in the region before this weekend, but will surely be now, and very high at that.

But the real story of this race was the stunning 12:17.9 clocking by Brian Leung of West Windsor Plainsboro South NJ. The Central Jersey senior said he was very surprised at his victory over Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg VA (ranked #14 in the United States) and especially at his time, which put him at #8 on the all-time VCP 2.5 mile list, ahead of such names as Alan Webb, Marty Liquori, and Alberto Salazar. This performance could mean a very exciting battle at the New Jersey Meet of Champions between Leung and Doug Smith, and Craig Forys’s Holmdel course record from last year could be in jeopardy.
