DyeStat XC Region Review NE

Summary of Northeast Top Ten, Week Ending Oct. 6, 2007

By Matt Soja, Dyestat NE Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

The first weekend of October felt more like the last weekend of June, with temperatures cracking 90 degrees in some parts of the region. This, of course, had a major impact on the local harriers, leading to slower times for most runners and in some cases, like at Wickham, to race cancellations. Thus the Danbury boys missed an opportunity for a tune-up race before Manhattan.

Otherwise, there was not much interstate competition, with the most action happening at the Shore Coaches meet in Jersey (see a separate meet article) where Voorhees girls proved their mettle. The Hanover girls dominated the Thetford Trail Run in Vermont as most of the other top girls teams took the weekend off. On the boys side, Con-Val and North Penn won their invitationals with most other teams either fielding JV squads or skipping the heat altogether.

The reason for such absenteeism this weekend is obvious – next Saturday is the Manhattan Invitational, the most famous, most prestigious, and most competitive invitational meet on the East Coast, if not in the country. Most of the ranked teams will be making the trip to Van Cortlandt Park, and although the boys races are divided pretty equally among the best teams in Northeast, Southeast, and New York, the girls race is all about the Eastern States Championships, which might be the deepest single race in the nation until NTN Nationals. The field features nearly each and every top team on this side of the Appalachians. Dyestat will be providing extensive on-site coverage, but if you can, you should go watch this grandest cross country spectacle yourself!

BOYS

1. Danbury (CT)
The top team in the region was supposed to race at the Wickham Park Invitational, but their race was cancelled because of the heat. Thus, Manhattan’s B race next Saturday will be their only second major appearance of the fall. They will go head-to-head with the best team in the Southeast, Oakton of Virginia.

2. Brookline (MA)
Idle this weekend, entered in Bay State Invitational next Saturday.

3. Germantown Friends (PA)
Their varsity was idle, but the next seven runners won the varsity race at the George School Invitational, averaging 18:56. At Manhattan they will be in the E race and should win it over Brentsville, ranked #8 in Southeast.

4. Con-Val (NH)
Won the low-key Hollis Invitational with 21 points and a 17:51 average without their second runner Ethan McBrien.

1. Alex McGrath 17:05
2. Dylan Fisher 17:14
3. Justin Butler 17:54
4. Devon Butler 18:06
11. Edward Glidden 18:56
17. Dan Ellingwood 19:48
24. Pier Pennoyer 19:59

5. North Penn (PA)
Another Saturday and another invitational won by the Landsdale harriers. After taking the crown at Carlisle a week ago, this time they captured the A Division race at the Salesianum Invitational in Delaware. They scored only 28 points, defeating the nearest competition (La Salle College) by 60 points, and averaging 16:55 on the very difficult course. Hoagland continued his great season, winning the individual crown in one of the fastest times in course history. They will be in the D race at Manhattan, facing a challenge from Midlothian of Virginia, ranked #3 in the Southeast.

1. Zach Hoagland 16:26
3. Zack Montijo 16:44
4. Brad Miles 16:49
9. Brian Quintrell 17:17
11. Brian Kuntzmann 17:20
14. Tim Stauring 17:26
17. Dominic Camasso 17:37

6. Merrimack (NH)
Idle this week. Next weekend they will be in the A race at Manhattan, facing off against two ranked teams from New York – Shaker and Smithtown.

7. Cumberland Valley (PA)
Idle this week.

8. North Allegheny (PA)
Their top runners had the weekend off while their teammates took sixth in the varsity race at Pittsburgh Central Catholic Invitational. They are not entered in Manhattan.

9. Christian Brothers Academy (NJ)
The Colts used their solid pack to win the A Division (big schools) at the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park. Their 65-96 triumph over Cherokee was accomplished with only a 27-second spread between their first and fifth runners. However, CBA’s 17:14 was only the fourth best average of the day, and in the merged scoring they would have lost to Haddonfield, which raced under much cooler conditions in the morning. The afternoon heat apparently affected some of the Colts, with LaMorte running about a minute off his usual performance. Next Saturday they will race in the Manhattan Invitational G race against New York’s #2 team Shenendehowa and Morris Hills, which also had a great race at the Shore, winning its division with a slightly better team average.

7. Vin Ferrer 17:02
11. Brendon Pierson 17:10
12. Kyle Havard 17:11
15. Ben Horel 17:18
21. Dan Bailey 17:29
32. Brendan Swan 17:46
62. Christian LaMorte 18:11
(JV race: 2. Dennis Smith 17:46)

10. East Greenwich (RI)
Making their top 10 debut, they won the unusually scored Woods Trail Run in Thetford, Vermont. All individual entrants in the meet were split into 5 different races according to individual seeds but scored together, as if it were one huge race. The favored Rhode Island team won the combined scoring by a margin of 105-152 over the host state’s Mount Mansfield. Their 18:07 average is quite misleading, as the course was obviosuly long (3.25 miles according to some TrackTalk posters), but their depth is definitely concerning with a 90-second gap after the fifth runner. They are not running at Manhattan as their next major race will be Brown Invitational on October 20.

3. Nick Ross 17:33
4. Mark Feigen 17:32
14. Akash Chougule 18:07
32. Mike Pezzullo 18:32
54. Andrew Glod 18:56
190. Alex Rickert 20:23
195. Austin Schaefer 20:27

GIRLS

1. Hanover (NH)
The top team in the region took the title at Woods Trail Run by more than 100 points, collecting 45 points in the combined scoring. One of their top three runners, Grace Rodriguez, was missing. Their average of 20:56 was inflated by the difficult and long course, but the Eastern States Championships next Saturday will verify how good this team truly is when they face some of the best teams in the country.

1. Georgia Griffin 19:38
8. Cate Brown 21:04
9. Heidi Caldwell 21:08
13. Beth Taylor 21:23
14. Bridgette Black 21:27
27. Rosalie Lipfert 22:04
40. Connie Emerson 22:26

Meet results: http://www.lancertiming.com/

2. Voorhees (NJ)
The Bowdoin Invitational winners easily took the C Division crown at Shore Coaches, taking 5 of the top 9 spots and scoring only 24 points. Melanie Thompson ran the second fastest individual time of the day and the middle of the pack finished together just around the 20-minute mark. They registered a 20:01 average, by far the best of the day (but Colts Neck did not run in the meet). Next Saturday – clash with Hanover at the Eastern States race at Manhattan.

1. Melanie Thompson 19:02
4. Colette Whitney 20:00
5. Kathy Petruzzellis 20:10
6. Katrina Spratford 20:10
9. Christine Curtis 20:44
24. Maria Baldino 22:06
34. Robin Lynn 22:31
(JV race: 2. Kinisha Gala 22:15)

Meet results: http://lfrauloracingsystems.com/07shorecoachesinv.html

3. Emmaus (PA)
Idle this weekend. On Saturday they will take on the best teams in the region and beyond at Eastern States.

4. Glastonbury (CT)
They suffered the same fate as Danbury boys, having their Wickham race cancelled. They are not running Manhattan, however.

5. Lincoln-Sudbury (MA)
Idle this weekend, Eastern States on Saturday.

6. Newton South (MA)
Idle. Next weekend: Bay State Invitational at Franklin Park.

7. Red Bank Catholic (NJ)
The Caseys squared off against local rivals and a regional bubble team Monsignor Donovan in the Shore D race. Both teams were missing their best runners (presumably due to SATs) – RBC’s Janine Louie and Mon Don’s Brianna Crowe. But what was supposed to be a tight battle turned into a rout of the Caseys who lost soundly 37-94, with several other teams beating their 21:02 average. Monsignor Donovan, on the other hand, averaged 20:23 without its best runner, which might result in them replacing RBC in this week’s top 10. Mon Don is also in the Eastern States race while RBC is not entered in the meet at all, resting for the Monmouth County championships on October 16.

8. Michelle Capozzi 20:24
12. Emily Rooney 20:35
20. Katie Rochford 21:08
26. Kim Hogan 21:22
30. Molly McNamara 21:41
41. Michelle Savarese 22:07
67. Keely Eckberg 23:19
(JV race: 1. Hannah Eckstein 21:48)

Meet results: http://lfrauloracingsystems.com/07shorecoachesinv.html

8. Bromfield (MA)
Next up – Eastern States Championships on Saturday.

9. Northern York (PA)
Debuting in top 10, they won the Steel City Invitational in Coatesville PA, 79-89 over unranked Downingtown East. They averaged 20:40, but there is a big gap between their two stars and the rest of the pack.

2. Rachel Wong 19:37
8. Katie Meck 20:18
20. Maegan Boucher 21:04
21. Abby Wong 21:05
28. Kaylin Delvecchio 21:17
37. Kristin Taylor 21:37
104. Molly Veres 23:01

Meet results: http://pa.milesplit.us/meets/26173/results/54877

10. Unionville (PA)
Idle this week.
