NJ BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY TOP 25 POLL FOR NOV. 19
As expected, the results from the state group championships this past Sunday caused a major shake up in the poll this week. But the state’s top two teams, No. 1 Don Bosco and No. 2 West Windsor-Plainsboro, stayed in those spots as they prepared for its big showdown at this Saturday’s 37th NJSIAA Meet of Champions.
The M of C race is set for 10 a.m. at Holmdel Park.
West Windsor North, No. 19 nationally, crushed the Group 3 race as anticipated, putting four runners ahead of runner-up Morris Hills’ second man and averaging a meet best 16:24 on the way to a second straight title.
Don Bosco, ranked No. 7 in the nation, didn’t run as fast as West Windsor (16:41), but was just as dominant, packing six runners in front of runner-up Christian Brothers’ No. 2 man in a 52-point romp for its third straight title.
Pope John made the biggest leap this week, catapulting from the depths of the unranked to No. 9 with its strong third-place showing in the Non-Public A race (17:17 avg.).
Paul VI also made its debut in the rankings, placing fourth in Non-Public A (17:23 avg.) to earn the No. 13 spot.
Bridgewater-Raritan, sixth in Group 4, and Westfield, seventh in Group 4, also moved into the rankings at No. 16 and No. 17, respectively.
Cinnaminson (24) and Summit (25) re-entered the rankings after going 2-3 in Group 2.
Old Bridge, by avenging its loss in the Central Jersey, Group 4 race with a victory in the state Group 4 race (seven points over Cherokee), climbed up two spots to No. 7.
Two of the top eight teams in the rankings last week, West Windsor-Plainsboro South and Millburn, dropped a few spots each after having illness hinder their performances.
West Windsor South, which beat Old Bridge in the sectional race, fell three places to No. 10 after finishing fourth in Group 4. West Windsor South’s top runner, Sam Macaluso ran sick and dropped out near the mile mark, but Kurt Wayton’s team miraculously still qualified for the Meet of Champions as a wild card. It’s the second straight year that the Pirates advanced as a wild card.
Meanwhile, Millburn took a tumble from No. 8 to No. 15 after placing fifth in Group 3. Millburn’s Brian Robinson wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t finish the race. A healthy Robinson

NJ BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY TOP 25 POLL FOR NOV. 13
Randolph made the biggest jump in the Top 25, vaulting 12 spots to No. 11 after its impressive win in the North Jersey, Section 1 Group 4 race at Garret Mountain last Saturday in West Paterson. Randolph ended Ridgewood streak of six straight titles, 74-95 over the defending champion. Lou Catizone, a football player a year ago, led the surge for Randolph by placing third in 15:59.5 as coach Nick Albanito’s squad averaged 16:47 and made itself a contender for this Saturday’s state Group 4 title at Holmdel Park. Two of Randolph’s biggest foes in Group 4 will be West Windsor-Plainsboro South and Toms River North, who each climbed a few spots this week. West Windsor South jumped two places up to No. 9 after averaging 16:45 and winning in Central Jersey for the first time. Toms River North slid up three positions to No. 10 based on its victory in South Jersey, averaging 16:43.. Five teams, four from South Jersey, that were unranked last week have made its way into the poll. Washington (16), Cherry Hill East (18), and Mainland (23) finished 3-4-5 in the rugged South Jersey, Group 4 race. Shawnee (24) and Livingston (25) round out the newcomers.
Ocean City, led by senior Brett Johnson’s victory in 15:38, is another team on the move, climbing from No. 20 to No. 12 after beating previous No. 10 Kingsway, 56-60, for the South Jersey, Group 3 title. There will plenty of shakeups this weekend when 24 of the 25 teams in the poll toe the line Saturday at the NJSIAA Group Championships at Holmdel Park. In the Non-Public A race, defending champion Don Bosco Prep will put its No. 1 ranking on the line against No. 3 Christian Brothers Academy. Don Bosco beat CBA in the Eastern race at the Manhattan Invitational and is favored to win again.
Over the last 13 years, every Non-Public A title has been won by either CBA (11 straight from 1995-2005) or Don Bosco (two straight).CBA as won 22 state titles, one short of the state record of 23 held by Bernards. The Group 4 race will feature 13 ranked teams, West Windsor South, Old Bridge, Toms River North, Randolph, Toms River North, Cherokee, Washington, Cherry Hill East, Ridgewood, Southern, Manalapan, Ridge, and Livingston. Meanwhile the Group 3 race has eight ranked teams going head-to-head, West Windsor North, Morris Hills, Mendham, Millburn, Ocean City, Kingsway, Holmdel and Shawnee.

The only change in the poll this week was a flip flop between Morris Hills and Mendham. Morrris Hills evened its season series with Mendham by winning the Morris County Championship by 19 points to move from No. 6 to No. 5. Mendham drops from No. 5 to No. 6. Don Bosco Prep, idle last week, maintains the top spot, but West Windsor North’s impressive win and 16:27.4 average in the B race at the Shore Coaches Invitational sets up a great showdown for the top spot at Saturday’s Eastern States race at the 36th Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
The biggest moves were made by Kingsway, which went from unranked to No. 9, and Ridgewood, which climbed from No. 21 to No. 10. A lot will surely change after Saturday’s Manhattan meet, where the top seven teams will clash in the Eastern States race.
