Midwest Distance Gala Preview

By Tony Jones

The 4th Annual MWDG opens the post-season this weekend in Illinois distance-wise and it should be a treat. Prep stars from around the country- some as far away as Colorado will converge on the grounds of Illinois Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.

-Boy event previews-

Boys’ 800m-

Key villains: Mat Smoody (Palatine H.S.; Palatine, Il); Andrew Perkins (Juneau, Wis); Randall Babb (Wheaton-Warrenville South H.S.; Wheaton, Il); Graham Farmsworth (Wheaton North H.S.; Wheaton, Il); Obai Hussein (Rosemont H.S.; Rosemont, MN); Tommy Brinn (Otsego, MI)

Outlook: Smoody was one of the best kept secrets in Illinois until he blazed a 1:50.70 come from behind state championship victory several weeks ago. Although this will be his initial post-season competition he should have his hands full. That’s because Perkins is a seasoned veteran of out of season affairs. He has a 1:49.xx best and will seek to run faster. By the way, he has the meet record of 1:50.17 from last year. But don’t count out a very fast pace in a loaded field. Late add Brinn has got great leg speed (48.2-400m). Babb and Hussein won’t play the Caboose role as this is their chance for glory. Farnsworth ran well in the Senior All-Star meet last weekend.

Meet record chance: Yes. If the sometimes tricky Illinois weather cooperates, the record may be history.

Boys One Mile Run-

Key villains: Rob Finnerty (Burnsville H.S.; Burnsville, MN); Chris DeSilva (St. Charles North H.S.; St. Charles, Il); Jordan Carlson; Rosemount H.S.; Rosemount, MN); Francisco “Tito” Medrano (Lafayette Jeff H.S.; Lafayette, IN); Drew Shields (Fishers H.S.; Fishers, IN); Blake Irvin (Pleasant Valley H.S.; Bettendorf, IA); Michael Atchoo (Troy, MI); Danny Neff (Vandalia-Butler H.S.; Vandalia, OH); Nick Holmes (Limestone H.S.; Bartonville, Il)

Outlook: this is a strong field loaded top to bottom with solid times. Finnerty and Carlson will duel once more. Finnerty got the best of Carlson at the Minnesota state meet last weekend by a few tenths. How this one will play out depends on who sets the early pace. DeSilva is a potential 4:10 miler if he can stay on his feet. He fell at the Illinois state meet prelim and never finished. He is determined to run in the 4:10 range after posting a 4:12 career best. Shields is the Hoosier state champion and a front runner with good all-around talent. Holmes is another athlete with solid credentials. Hopefully, he can find the solid time (4:10) he produced during the regular season.

Meet record chance: probable. Evan Jager (Algonquin, IL- 4:07.00). The talent is here with several runners who have 4:06-4:07 pb’s.

Boys Two-Mile Run-

Key villains: Bobby Aprill (Dexter H.S.; Dexter, MI); Francisco “Tito” Medrano (Lafayette Jeff H.S.; Lafayette, IN); Chris Aldrich (PA); Elliot Krause (Appleton H.S.; Appleton, WI); Graham Bazell (Columbia, MD); Devin Allbaugh (Bettendorf, IA); Bobby Nicolls (Regis Jesuit H.S.; Aurora, CO)

Outlook: it appears most of the studs will be running the mile but the field is still good. Aprill may have the advantage over Medrano (if he doubles) and Nicolls. Nicolls is no stranger to Illinois soil as he participated in several Prospect Invites and a notable run in this year’s Palatine Invitational. Depending on the pace times could range from 8:55-9:05 for the winner.

Meet record chance: possible. De’Sean Turner- Indianapolis, IN-9:04.20).

-Girls’ event previews-

Girls’ 800-

Key starlets: Annette Eichelberger (West Chicago H.S.); Ellen Dougherty (Sioux City, IA); Ann Tank (Dodgeville, WI); Elisha Crawley (Decatur MacArthur H.S.; Decatur, IL); Jami Hill (Onalaska, WI)

Outlook: defending champion Ashley Verplank is running the mile but still a good field. Most of the girls competing have comparable PB’s and that will play a big factor in how fast times can and will be. Eichelberger, just a soph, has emerged as one of the best middle-distance runners in Illinois. She will be a front runner. Crawley has been up and down this season. She just missed qualifying for the 800 final at Illinois but is a solid runner. Hill placed second at Wisconsin state championships in the 800. She reportedly ran 2:11.0 on her team’s 4x8r this season. Look for all-around talented athlete Dougherty to impress. She has run 2:11.5 this year and will be among the favorites.

Meet record chance: slight chance. Ashley Verplank 2:10.27.

Girls Mile-

Key starlets: Ashley Verplank (Bloomington H.S.; Bloomington IL); Kristen Smith (Clarkston H.S.; Clarkston, MI); Lindsay Flannagan (Lake Park H.S.; Roselle, IL); Alexandra Leptich (Saline, MI).

Outlook: Verplank appears to be the class here. In her final high school race for the mile, she will be going for the all-time best for an Illinois girl (4:46.1). Hopefully, the small compliment of girls will challenge. On paper, no has run under 5:00. Verplank has a season best of 4:51.

Meet record chance: very good. Jenny Morgan (Clarkston, MI) 4:52.95.

Girls Two-Mile-

Key starlets: Emily Sisson (Omaha, NE); Kristen Sutherland (Sandburg H.S.; Orland Park, IL); Valery Burns (Penn H.S.; Mishawaka, IN).

Outlook: this is a new event for 2008 and just a few entries. Sutherland is Illinois champion and Sisson is Nebraska champion. Sisson has a best of 10:21. She is also a veteran of post-season affairs.
