NTN Northwest Review

Week Ending 10/28/06 Northwest Region

by Dave Devine, NTN Northwest Editor

BOYS

1. Ferris, WA –
2. Mead, WA –
3. Central Valley, WA –

The GSL rivals locked horns in their Eastern Washington Regional on 10/28. A more complete report can be found here: http://www.dyestat.com/?pg=reg7wa3A4Adual, but suffice to say it was another Mead-Ferris classic. The two teams, closely linked over the last few years, were separated by a single point, 41-42, at the regional race. Mead averaged a sterling 15:43 and dropped a 51-second spread behind Dylan Hatcher’s narrow win over Ferris’ David Hickerson. Ferris wasn’t far back, averaging 15:46 (1:01 spread) and placing three ahead of Mead’s third. The difference for Mead was the performance of their 4-5-6 men, who all took care of their Ferris counterparts to steal the win. It’s well worth noting that in both 2004 and 2005, Ferris failed to win the regional meet, only to return a week later to take the state title. Will history repeat itself? We’ll know in a week.

Central Valley, after mostly laying low since their breakthrough at Danner, must have been hoping for a better result here. In a meet in which they might have gained valuable momentum heading to state, they were well back of Mead and Ferris with their 87-point, third place finish. #1 Tylor Thatcher ran well up front (3rd 15:23), and Sean Coyle, who has been a bit up and down this season, finished 9th in 15:42. But the pack was spread out over a minute-and-a-half, allowing gaps that may not have hurt CV in the GSL tri-meets, but were damaging in the larger regional. Running in the 3A race, previously ranked North Central made a bid for a second look with their 1-4 sweep (separated by 9 seconds) and 16:09 team average to Central Valley’s 16:11. North Central’s 49-second 1-5 spread certainly makes them dangerous heading into the 3A state race.

4. Kodiak, AK –
Continuing train while simultaneously keeping things light and fun, the Kodiak boys participated in the 9th annual Chiniak to Kodiak relay--a 42.7 mile, five-leg relay over the mountainous terrain from Chiniak, AK to downtown Kodiak. Coach Dunbar reports, “In the front group the high school boys dominated the adult team, but had 4 lead changes before the final lead was taken in the last two miles by sophomore Sam Salus passing Junior Colton Cubbedge at Deadman’s Curve and bringing his team of Caleb Hienrichs, Trevor Dunbar, Benny Garcia and Patrick Schneider home to a 41-second victory with a finish time of 4:34:51 to 4:35:32...Between the two boy’s squads, ten boys averaged 6:29 per mile for over 85 miles of difficult hilly terrain.” And that’s how you stay in shape in Alaska after the season ends.

Up Next: Keep training...either for NTN or FL West.

5. Bozeman, MT –
The Hawks are savoring their big Montana state win and preparing for a meet that offers both opportunity and obstacle as they travel this week to the Rocky Mountain XC Championship to square off against a host of NW- and SW-ranked teams.

6. Borah, ID –
Close observers of Idaho boys cross country knew this was a possibility back in August. Pre-season prognosticators had Mountain View tabbed as a 5A favorite, but they didn’t seem to live up to expectations early in the season. On the biggest Idaho stage outside of the state meet, Bob Firman, they were a distant 8th while Borah was carving a name for itself in 2nd. People knew their pack was tight, but it wasn’t especially feared until last week, when they narrowly lost to Borah at the District III meet, 41-43. What a difference a week makes. Borah had strong performances from their reliable top-two of Bosch (3rd 16:00) and Huey (5th 16:16), but Mountain View’s 28-second (!) spread proved devastating as the unranked team knocked off the NW#6 squad. It was a classic case of team averages and total time meaning little in the face of team racing and team compression. Borah’s total time was lower, and their team average 7-seconds faster, but they still lost, 56-63, to the tightly-grouped Mountain View runners. Now both teams will attempt to regroup and prepare for the Rocky Mountain meet.

7. Central Catholic, OR –
The Rams were looking for a little momentum heading into this week’s Oregon State Meet, and they got it with a smooth 23-point win at the Mount Hood Conference district meet. Season-long #1 Taylor Morgan continued to lead the way with his 16:24 win. Luke Wiltshire continued his return to form with his 16:47 3rd-man performance, only 23 seconds behind Morgan. At Danner and Adidas he was 36secs and 55secs behind, so he’s getting closer. Fifth-man Kevin O’Malley, struggling with a minor injury, closed out the Rams scoring. The next fastest times for CC came in the JV race, where a clutch of hopefuls were battling for the #6 and #7 spots on the state-bound team. Those slots went to Sam Wotipka (17:06) and Nick Turner (17:14).

8. Jesuit, OR –
Like their Mount Hood Conference counterparts, Jesuit was looking to sharpen up and head into the championship weekend with some confidence. The Crusaders achieved a remarkably similar result, also scoring a 23-point district meet win on 10/25. Brian Manning led the way, dipping under 16 minutes with his 15:52 win. In close tow were Sam Larson (2nd), Tim Kessler (4th) and Peter Maag (5th), all within 14 seconds. There was a bit of a gap back to #5, but still only a 44-second 1-6 split. It’s shaping up to be a great race with Central Catholic for the 6A state title.

9. Gig Harbor, WA –
The Gig Harbor boys had a rough day at the West Central district meet, 10/28. As Coach Patty Ley remarked, “If it could go wrong, it did,” also noting that, “Tahoma ran smarter than we did and they deserved the win.” Unranked Tahoma, a team vying all season for consideration, will certainly grab some attention for knocking off Gig Harbor, 82-104. The Tides were led by Miles Unterreiner, who has oscillated between #1 and #2 this season. Here he was clearly their #1, finishing 4th in 15:40, 18-seconds up on ailing teammate Charlie Williams (8th 15:58). According to Coach Ley, the 3-4 runners got caught in the pack and struggled to weave their way back through the field. Meanwhile Tahoma was being led by Jonathan Lafler (barely outkicked by Kentwood’s Michael Chinchar for the win) and three scorers in the top 10. It only gets tougher from here, for both teams, as this weekend brings the 4A state meet and a trio of powerful GSL squads from the east.

10. Seattle Prep, WA –
It’s hard to say which is more important to Seattle Prep’s success, their dominant frontrunner or their daunting depth. Both were on display at their district meet 10/26. Top guy Max O’Donoghue-McDonald surged away from Abdi Hassan using what Coach John Robertson called “a gear I’ve never seen,” and the team dug into the well of talent to compensate for injuries and illness to their normal #2 and #5 runners. Rival Bishop Blanchet had 29 points through four runners, to SP’s 35, but the Panthers put their final three in ahead of Blanchet’s fifth (back in 42nd ) to assure the 55-68 win. Now it’s on to 3A state, where both teams will face a determined North Central.

2. Billings Senior, MT –
The Lady Broncs have a week to bask in the glow of their state title (and recent #2 ranking) before they travel to Pocatello, Idaho to put that ranking on the line against some of the top teams from the NW and SW NTN regions.

3. Gig Harbor, WA –
8. Thomas Jefferson, WA –

Competing without their normal #4, Christy Sipes (at a national tennis tournament), the girls from Gig Harbor still held off a game Thomas Jefferson squad, 68-76, at the West Central District Meet. As Coach Ley said, “our 5,6,7 really had to step up. Which they did nicely.” The spread was a tad unwieldy at 1:43, but #1 Kesslee Payne was quite a bit closer to Bellarmine’s Nicole Cochran than she’d been the previous week (44secs down to 24secs), and with Sipes inserted back in the lineup the compression shrinks a good deal.

Jefferson was led up front by a stellar run from Kenna Patrick, turning back Bellarmine ace Cochran by 10-seconds with her 17:40.6. Cassidy Robey had a strong performance as TJ’s #2, coming in 9th in 19:04. The Raiders were within 4 points of Gig Harbor after each team’s fourth crossed the line, but the Tides’ fifth came in ahead of Jefferson’s fifth to seal the win. Both squads head to the Washington 4A State Meet next weekend for an anticipated rematch.

4. Jesuit, OR –
10. Sunset, OR –

The Lady Crusaders faced a stiffer challenge in their Metro district meet than their male counterparts. NW#10 Sunset was hoping to punch their own ticket to Eugene and prove that their ranking is warranted this late in the season. Despite the challenge, Jesuit took the top three places, and 5 of the top 8, for a fairly smooth 21-48 win. Sunset raced well up front, with Audrey Botti (4th 18:24) and Crissy Foster (6th 18:35) breaking up the Jesuit pack, but in the end could not handle the Crusader’s depth. Jesuit, for their part, averaged an impressive 18:31, with three runners at 18:16 or better (McGuirk and VanRysselberghe threatening to break 18) and two others knocking on the door of sub-19. These are two more teams destined to meet again in less than a week, though Jesuit’s real remaining challenge seems to be making a convincing case at States for a ranking higher than 4th.

No surprises here, as the Boise girls upheld the season-long perception that Coach Dave Mill’s squad was the best in Idaho with a solid 46-79 win over Eagle. A pair of Borah runners (Karleigh Gempler and Nicole Nielson, 1-2 at 18:27.5 and 18:27.9) took the laurels up front, as the Braves stuck with what works best for them, team running. They placed all 5 scorers in the top 16 with a neat 36-second 1-5 spread. Sarah Olson led in 5th, running 19:33, followed by Anne Lovelace in 8th (19:55) and Rebekah McGourty in10th (20:01). Jacque Sahlberg returned from her soccer foray to score as the 4th runner in 20:05 and Katie Lovelace rounded out the team's scoring in 16th and 20:09. Their second state title in a row securely in hand, Boise now travels to Pocatello to take on Billings Senior and some of the best teams in the SW NTN region.

7. West Anchorage, AK –
No further meets scheduled.

9. Snohomish, WA –
At the District 1 4A meet, Snohomish won handily over Marysville-Pilchuck, 40-75. Senior Kara Sporrong paced things as usual, pulling away for a dominant 32-second win in 18:41. Just over a minute later came Snohomish’s next two runners, Madison Sheppley (5th 19:46) and Kristi Fairbanks (6th 19:47). The 2-5 split of 25 seconds may be a better measure of where things stand, with a lead runner as far out as Sporrong. (Ellie Bonner, #2 a week ago for Snohomish at 19:08, was not in the race.) Still, the real fireworks seemed to take place in the 3A race, where previous rankers Squalicum dropped a 1-5 sweep (all under 19:50) on the other seven teams in the district. Their team average and total team time were well up on Snohomish’s from the 4A race, though with Bonner in the lineup for Snohomish, the comparison is much more favorable. Both teams advance to the Washington state meet this week, where they’ll vie separately for overall Washington recognition.
