NTN Northwest Review

Week Ending 11/4/06 Northwest Region

by Dave Devine, NTN Northwest Editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS

1. Mead, WA –
2. Ferris, WA –
4. Central Valley, WA –

Joel Ferris followed a familiar script to win its latest WA 4A state title. For the fourth year in a row, Ferris came home the victors in the big meet after ceding the regional to another squad. Mead couldn’t replicate its feat of a week ago, when they upset the Saxons by a single point and borrowed their #1 ranking for a week. Ferris got the job done all the way down the line for an impressive 21-point win over the Panthers (51-72). Senior Cameron Quackenbush surprised by taking over as #1 man and winning the whole thing. Behind him his teammates were placing two more in front of Mead’s first and six in front of their fifth. "Off the course, we're good friends," Quackenbush confided to the Seattle Times after the race, "On the course, we want to stomp each other into the ground."

Mead was led by Kelly Lynch (7th 16:00) and Kelvin Daratha (8th 16:02), as season-long frontman Dylan Hatcher ran third for the Panthers, crossing 13th in 16:07. Taylor Nepon, continuing his effort to return to ‘05 form, was seventh man here (121st 18:03).

Central Valley rebounded from a sub-par outing at the regional meet to run much closer to the GSL competition at the state meet. Forty-six points behind Mead at the Regional, CV closed the gap to 20 in Pasco, getting top-10 finishes from Tylor Thatcher (4th 15:57) and Sean Coyle (10th 16:03) and the sort of performance they’ve been hoping for from #3 Jayson Taylor (28th -scoring 19th 16:34). Their 1:11 spread and 16:30 team average were both superior to their regional efforts.

Previous NW rankers Gig Harbor finished 6th, behind a Joey Bywater-led Lake Stevens team and a Tahoma squad that has been improving throughout the season.

3. Kodiak, AK –
No meets or events reported.

5. Bozeman, MT –
7. Mountain View, ID -
8. Borah, ID -

At the newly-created Rocky Mountain Region XC Championships, Bozeman came within 4 points of knocking off SW#3/US#25 Cheyenne Central WY, 124-128. With their second place finish they defeated a host of ranked teams-- SW#’s 4,7,8,9,10 and NW#’s 7 and 8. In the large field, according to Bozeman coach Clint May, no team could run away with the race. “As the boys started moving in the second mile I felt very good about what I was seeing and yet I knew there was so much work to be done. The third mile was much like the 2nd; lots of continual passing. The prospects of winning were improving with each step. As the racers came down the finish stretch one thing was clear, no one team was dominating. We would have to just wait and see.” Great frontrunning from Daniel Jackson (11th 16:34), and a 41-second spread behind him, kept Bozeman in the hunt. How close were the two teams? Cheyenne’s #1 beat Bozeman’s #1, Bozeman's #2 beat Cheyenne’s #2, Cheyenne’s #3 beat Bozeman’s #3, Bozeman’s #4 beat Cheyenne’s #4, Cheyenne’s #5 beat Bozeman’s #5, Bozeman’s #6 beat Cheyenne’s #6, Bozeman’s #7 beat Cheyenne’s #7. As Coach May said, “Crazy close.”

Borah, coming off a tough loss at the Idaho state meet, rebounded here to take fifth, well ahead of Mountain View ID, the team that beat them at state. Borah was led by usual (and seemingly interchangeable) top guns Sean Huey (9th 16:29) and Sawyer Bosch (13th 16:43) in the top 15, and a 1:09 spread that meant simply trying to get everyone in the top-100 in the large field.

First week NW rankers Mountain View ID didn’t fare quite as well. The 28-second spread from State was still tight at 46-seconds, but whereas at State their pack began within 21 seconds of Borah’s #2 (Huey, in that case), in Pocatello it began 53 seconds behind Borah’s #2 (Bosch). The five-pack was tight, but buried too far in the field to finish any higher than 19th.

6. North Central, WA -

In the WA 3A Championship, North Central answered the season-long East/West question regarding their strength compared to previously-ranked Seattle Prep. Prep’s Max O'Donoghue-McDonald decimated the field in a blistering 15:32, but North Central’s pack hung within 49 seconds of each other, beginning with Andy Kimpel’s 5th place finish, to score the 61-75 win. Thanks largely to O’Donoghue-McDonald’s way-out-there time, Prep had a faster team average, but North Central still took home the trophy. It’s worth noting the alternating class years of NC’s top seven: soph-junior-soph-junior-soph-junior-soph (!). Certainly a team to watch in 2007.

9. Central Catholic, OR –
10. Jesuit, OR –

After the Adidas Classic on October 14th, where Central Catholic edged Jesuit by a single point behind Kodiak’s win, it was eminently clear that these two would be waging a tight battle for the Oregon 6A State Championship. They didn’t disappoint. The full story is here: http://www.dyestat.com/?pg=reg7or061104statemeetreport, but suffice to say, the Rams and the Crusaders were separated by a mere two points (56-58) as Taylor Morgan’s individual win (15:53) led a Central Catholic team determined to hold onto their ’05 state title. Each team placed 3 in the top 10, with CC going 1-4-7 and Jesuit going 5-9-10. From there, Jesuit’s 4th and 5th beat CC’s 4th and 5th, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome Central Catholic’s single digits up front.

Fellow Portlanders Lincoln High, unranked all-season and seeking some respect, made things even tighter with their strong finish, only six points behind Jesuit at 64.

2. Billings Senior, MT –
5. Boise, ID –

Billings Senior, ranked NW#2 and riding the high of a state win, had little to gain and much to lose by traveling to Pocatello for the inaugural Rocky Mountain Region XC Championship. They went anyway. Facing 9 state champions from 4 other states, the Broncs came out second (105-126) to a surprising SW#9 Dakota Ridge CO team. In doing so, Billings Senior knocked off NW#5 Boise and SW#4 Park City UT and SW#6 Campbell County WY. Billings had a much smaller spread than Dakota Ridge, at 1:11, and managed 6 in before DR’s fifth, but they couldn’t overcome the 4-6 finish of DR’s top two. The Broncs were led, as they have been all season, by the tough frontrunning of Bridgette Hoenke (11th 19:21.2).

Boise, riding their own state win high, joined Billings Senior in the top five with their fourth place finish ahead of SW#6 Campbell County WY. Their 36-second spread, so successful at the state meet, expanded to 1:34 in the large Rocky Mountain field, but the Braves were still led up front by the reliable Sarah Olson (16th 19:28). State #2 runner Anne Lovelace was their fourth runner here, meaning Rebekah McGourty (26th 20:02.3) and Jacque Sahlberg (36th 20:14.9) had to step up to keep their team close.

3. Jesuit, OR -

The Crusaders racked up their fifth state title in a row with a 56-101 win in the 6A race against previously-ranked Sunset. A full report can be found here: http://www.dyestat.com/?pg=reg7or061104statemeetreport. Like Gig Harbor, with whom they can’t escape comparison this year, Jesuit was fronted by a trio that’s been leading them all season: Noelle VanRysselberghe (4th 18:52), Adrienne McGuirk (5th 18:56) and Katie Sullivan (10th 19:16). Claire Hagler, their 4th at the district meet, came in as their 6th runner at State, but Liz Miller and Elizabeth Murphy stepped up to keep the 1:15 spread reasonably close to the 1:03 they showed at District.

4. Gig Harbor, WA –
8. Thomas Jefferson, WA –
10. Snohomish, WA –

Thomas Jefferson has been creeping closer to Gig Harbor all season, coming within 8 points last week at the West Central District Meet when the Tides ran without normal #4 Christy Sipes. At the WA 4A State Meet, Gig Harbor had Sipes back and still had everything they could handle from a Raiders squad fronted by individual winner Kenna Patrick (18:13). The final score was 81-93, a twelve point margin carved out up front by a 5-10-15 finish from the tough Gig trio of Kesslee Payne (5th 18:47), Anna Kalbrener (10th 19:12) and Amanda Andrews (15th 19:25).

Jefferson placed four ahead of Gig Harbor’s fourth, but then had to rely on their #7 from Districts, Alicia Clarke, to step up as their fifth runner at State (69th 20:46). Patrick’s win coupled with the gap back to their fifth runner meant Jefferson’s spread was 2:33, but they are a young team, with 5 of 7 returning next year, and should be formidable again in 2007.

Ellie Bonner, absent from Snohomish’s line-up at the district meet, returned to lead the Panthers to a 4th place finish, behind an Eastlake squad angling for recognition all season. Snohomish’s normal #1, Kara Sporrong, expected to be in the top 10, seemed to have an off day, finishing behind Bonner in 22nd place. Snohomish is young as well, losing only Sporrong, and will likely challenge again in ‘07

The Storm scratched their way back into the rankings last week with their perfect-15 district win. In the WA 3A State Meet they rewarded that respect with a dominant win, 80-131, over Mt. Spokane. As she has in numerous meets this season, Bronwyn Crossman led the way, winning the individual state title over West Valley Yakima’s Lisa Olander (18:44 to 18:46). The 53-second spread on display at Districts expanded to 1:49 here, but Crossman was 1:23 clear of her closest teammate. The more telling split was 2-5: a mere 26 seconds.
