NTN Northwest Review - 10/14/06

Week ending 10/14/06 Northwest Region

by Dave Devine, Northwest NTN Regional Editor

boys - girls

BOYS

1. Ferris, WA –
Ferris contested a GSL tri-meet vs East Valley and Mt. Spokane on Wednesday 10/11, with full results unavailable. They ran no invitational last weekend.

Up Next: GSL tri-meet 10/20 vs. Rogers and Lewis & Clark, then Regional meet 10/28

2. Mead, WA –
3. Central Valley, WA –

Mead and Central Valley hooked up for a Wednesday GSL tri-meet on 10/11, along with Lewis & Clark. Both teams were coming off several challenging weekends, and seemed to treat this meet with less intensity than might otherwise attend a #2 vs #3 race. Mead held out Taylor Nepon again, apparently still bothered by tendonitis, and Central Valley kept normal 3-4 man Jason Stoker on the bench as a precaution from lingering minor injury. Even with the caveats, Mead’s #1 Dylan Hatcher had a big day, setting a course record and leading a 1-2-3 Mead finish up front. The Panthers took five of the top 7 from CV, broken up by top Bears Tylor Thatcher (4th) and Sean Coyle (5th). Both teams are clearly marshalling their biggest efforts for Regional and State in the coming weeks.

4. Borah, ID –
Borah, running without normal #3 Jared Neilson (recovering from a back injury on the eve of the Danner Invite), raced the Boise City meet against some top Idaho competition and held off an improving Boise team, 34-49. Boise’s ace Nick Bolinder broke the tape, but Borah’s front duo of Huey and Bosch made sure the Lions would start their scoring with low digits. The 1-5 split of 1:22 was a bit wide, but things tighten up with Neilson back in the lineup.

5. Central Catholic, OR –
Central Catholic sharpened up for the Adidas Classic with a controlled effort at their MHC/PIL Meet at Fernhill Park on 10/11. According to Coach Dave Frank, “the plan was to go hard for the first mile, relax in the second mile, and race the third mile.” Grant High’s Nathan Knutson came away with the win, but the Rams took places 2 – 9, sporting a 16:44 average and 17-second spread for the top five. On Saturday, they returned to Fernhill for the Adidas Classic and ran into an aggressive Kodiak AK and an improving Jesuit OR squad. The full story is on DyeStat’s front page, but Taylor Morgan’s breakout race was not enough to keep the Rams from falling 53-62 to NW#10 Kodiak’s ambitious front-running game plan. The neat 17-second compression expanded to nearly a minute (57 sec) in the larger invitational field, and Central Catholic found NW#8 Jesuit only a single point back when the scoring was complete.

Like several other teams, Gig Harbor is regrouping and making the small preparations necessary for the championship season push. They raced at the Narrows League Preview 10/10, holding out recent #1 Charlie Williams (foot) and top-5 guy Shane Polley (knee), both with minor injuries. Their depth allowed them to still come away with the win, as they went 1-5-6-7-8 on the field. Miles Unterreiner won easily, coming home unpressed in 16:01.

8. Jesuit, OR –
The Crusaders—not exactly an afterthought, but not exactly a favorite to win the Oregon 6A State Meet—surged into serious contention after their narrow 1-point loss to Central Catholic at the Adidas Meet. They tuned up for the strong Saturday effort with a dual meet Wednesday vs. Westview. There they dropped a pack-running clinic, taking the top 7 spots and packing those seven into less than 2 ticks of the clock—all seven runners between 16:39.7 and 16:41.6. That commitment to close running paid off with a strong showing at Adidas, where Brian Manning made a run for the front (ending up 4th at the wire in 15:43) and his teammates packed 2-6 in 38 seconds. They too succumbed to Kodiak’s great race, but opened some eyes with their proximity to Central Catholic.

9. Seattle Prep, WA –
The Panthers ran a six-team league meet on 10/12, winning handily with 28 points to Nathan Hale’s 46 and Bainbridge’s 62. Hale was led by Washington standout Abdi Hasan, who took down Prep’s top runner, Max O’Donoghue-McDonald, 15:58-16:00, only days after O’Donoghue-McDonald’s triumphant win at Jim Danner. Only partial results were available.

10. Kodiak, AK –
The boys from Kodiak AK had the biggest week in the NW Boys Top 10. After holding their ground, rankings-wise, at the Jim Danner Invitational, they remained in Oregon for the week, rested up and relaxed, and then beat two higher-ranked teams they’d lost to at Danner. To pull it off they employed a double-edged strategy—sending their top 2 boys streaking to the lead, and having the next 4 move up gradually throughout the race, ala West Valley AK at Danner last week. Trevor Dunbar and Cory Pena took care of business up front, and the 3-4-5 men (led by Trevor’s older brother Miles) closed exceptionally well in the third mile to seal the win.

2. Jesuit, OR –
Like their male Crusader counterparts, the Jesuit girls keyed up for the Adidas meet with a dual vs Westview on 10/11. Although they didn’t duplicate the 7-in-2-seconds feat of the boys, they too took the top seven slots and went 23 seconds 1-7, all well under 20 minutes. At the Adidas Classic, for the second year in a row, they faced a challenge from Alaska. Two Northern teams were hoping to make a name with a win over Jesuit, but this time the Crusaders were more than prepared. Their top pair ran magnificently against some deep talent, going 3-5 (18:08 and 18:10) to lead all seven Crusaders into the top 25. Their 49 points was well-clear of Juneau-Douglas’ 74 and West Anchorage’s 83.

3. Gig Harbor, WA –
The Gig Harbor girls wrapped up the regular season with the low-key Narrows League Preview on 10/10. As Coach Patty Ley noted, the girls weren't really pushed and it showed in a 1-7 finish. #1 runner Kesslee Payne is back, though rusty, from her bee-sting lay up. The Tides will return to the same course this week for their Narrows League Championship meet, and the infusion of a Nicole Cochran-led Bellarmine squad should push the Gig girls to a stronger effort.

4. Billings Senior, MT –
The girls from Billings Senior continued to knock heads with Billings West, and continued to come out ahead. At the Billings City Meet on 10/11 they hung a 16-point win on their cross-city rivals, as Senior leader Bridgette Hoenke’s 17:31 (3mi) led her teammates to a 1-2-3-4-6-7-12 showing. Hoenke’s a state champ favorite, and tends to gap her team a bit, but the 2-5 split is 31 seconds, and the team put up a sub-18 team average for 3 miles.

5. Boise, ID –
Competing in the Boise City Meet without their normal #3 Jacque Sahlberg (who had "3 soccer games in 3 days!" reports Coach Dave Mills), the Braves still turned back defending Idaho 4A state champs Bishop Kelly 38-51. BK’s Jordan Engelhardt got the win over Boise runners Sarah Olsen (2nd 18:59) and Anne Lovelace (4th 19:04). From there, Sahlberg’s absence was felt, as it was a 43 second gap back to usual #4 Rebekah McGourty, gamely filling in at #3. With the regular season concluded and the championship season about to begin, Boise will look to tighten the gaps some and push for another state title.

6. West Anchorage, AK –
7. Juneau-Douglas, AK -

West Anchorage and Juneau-Douglas had each hoped to replicate West Valley’s feat of a year ago, journeying south to take on a talented (and higher-ranked) Jesuit squad and earn a place for themselves in the NW top 5. Both teams ran strong races, beating every team in the Adidas Classic field save Jesuit, but neither could transfer the efforts that saw them topple West Valley AK at an invite earlier this season. Juneau-Douglas had the better day, starting with 1 point in the scoring off freshman Leah Francis’ sterling 17:42 meet record win. From there they packed 3 more in the top 20, but went back to 40th for their 5th scorer. West Anchorage was led by Shoshana Keegan (7th – 18:17) at the front, and managed 6 in before J-D’s fifth, but the talented Luch sisters were not the presence they’ve been in earlier meets and ended up spread a bit too far apart.

8. Thomas Jefferson, WA –
Jefferson followed up their strong performance at Jim Danner with a tri-meet win that closed out an undefeated league season for the Raiders. Senior Kenna Patrick led the way again, dropping under 19 for the 18:52 win. Normal top-7 runners Cassidy Robey and Rosemary Angeles did not compete, but the rest of the team nailed things down with a 1-2-3-6-9 finish.
