USA Indoor Nationals HS Relays - Boys 4x400

Mumford Detroit MI
humbles a crack field

Results - Stats - Pictures - Introduction of Teams

by John Dye

This was supposed to be a 5-deep fight to the finish, with five top 6 US ranked teams coming in within 0.6 seconds of each other. But Mumford Detroit MI had other ideas. Putting their best runner, Kenneth Ferguson, on the second leg, Mumford blew out to an insurmountable lead before the race was half over. Ferguson split 47.2, providing enough cushion to withstand the rushes of two fearsome anchormen: Melville Rogers of Transit Tech, who scorched the track with a 46.8 split, and Camden's Jade Smith (48.1), who lost steam in an unsuccessful attempt to pass Rogers.

Pictures

Suitland MD and Camden NJ were 1-2 on the first exchange and Ferguson had to weave through to get going.

Once clear, Ferguson went right to the lead on the backstretch of the first lap
and was stretching out the field by the start of his second lap (below)

Transit Tech's Melville Rogers (blue) can't quite catch Mumford.

Mumford winners: in running order from right, DeKoven Lynch,
Kenneth Ferguson, Jimmie Jones, and Hosea Jones.
