Bronxville Girls have SUPER weekend.
The Bronxville girls had a great relay weekend at the NSIC meet
at the 168th
Street Armory. On Friday evening Bronxville battled Red Bank in
the Distance
Medley. Red Banks Amanda Trotter got out to a 20 meter lead
over Catherine
Mullen at the first handoff. From then on Bronxville cut into the
R.B. lead.
Bronxvilles Liz Bergold got a couple of meters back on Christine
Hurley in
the 400. Then Caroline Mullen got a couple more back on her 800
leg from
Kate Kingsbery. But Red Bank was still up by about 15 meters, and
Kathleen
Trotter took off very quickly and opened up more ground. Bronxvilles
Michelle Rorke kept up steady pressure and her great 4:49.2 anchor
leg
brought the crowd to their feet as she fell just inches shy as Red
Bank broke
the meet and national record with an 11:49.34 clocking. Bronxville
also
dipped under the old national record with an11:49.61 clocking. Ok,
lets
wait until tomorrow.
On Saturday afternoon the Bronxville girls took the track in the
4 x 0ne Mile
relay. They had a thought of going after Rockfords national
record of
20:23.24. They got early help from friends Red Bank with a good
opening leg.
Bronxvilles Kate Ogorzally ran well as she dipped under 5:10,
several steps
behind Red Bank. Red Banks Kathleen Trotter and Bronxvilles
Caroline
Mullen were stride for stride when the baton slipped from Mullens
hand after
900 meters. Mullen picked it up and gave chase. Trotter finished
up the
second leg under record pace, while Mullen turned the stick over
to sister
Catherine. Catherine ran very well, getting the lead and coming
back well
enough to give Michelle Rorke a chance for the record. Rorke, who
would have
to run almost as fast as she ran the day before, was not able to
duplicate
that performance, ran a strong race. Bronxvilles time was
20:29.30, the
number two 4 x Mile time ever, a meet record, but six seconds away
from the
record. Thats the second number two all time best in two days.
Ok, lets
wait until tomorrow.
Nine oclock is an ungodly hour to run your third race of
the weekend, but
the Bronxville girls were there, and ready for the 4 x 800 relay.
So was
A.P. Randolph and Boys & Girls. Randolph was out to show Boys
& Girls who
was "boss" and they did here as Robin Mortel and Selena
Sappleton popped big
legs (2:11 range) and broke the race open for a meet record and
the number
two time ever. The Bronxville team of Caroline Mullen, Michelle
Rorke, Helen
Millson and Catherine Mullen ran 9:15.48 for third place. A good
time. A
good race, a top time in the country this year. They were still
happy and
smiling after the awards ceremony. Three races, top three in each,
and two
number two all time marks. OK, lets wait for spring. Great
racing
Bronxville!
Julia Lucas: Funny things happen
On the way back from a restaurant Friday evening Myers Parks
Julie Lucas was
talking on the shuttle. Somehow the talk got around the DMR race,
about
"old uniforms.". "Yes, they told a race official.
We were the team with the
old uniforms." Then it dawned on the official that Myers Parks
Lucas was
the runner that caught up with Red Banks anchor Kathleen Trotter,
went by
and pulled away. Lucas tried hard to unlap her team. (Myers Park
ran
12:32.90). Lucass teammates also informed everyone on the
shuttle she ran
her anchor in 4:51.0 and would win the mile on Sunday. But Lucas
said she was in
second section.
After telling meet management the whole story the Myers Park coach
requested
that Lucas be put in the fast section. She was put in lane 13. The
rest was
up to Lucas. She left no doubt about who would win. Lucas took the
lead at
the gun running 71 2:22 and 3:36. She faltered a bit as the
other kicked
hard (and late) to win the race and run the second fastest time
in the
country 4:51.56.
Lucas is headed to N.C. State next fall.
