2002 Indoor - Two National Meets
Comparison of NIC and NSI
by John Dye
This page compares the two meets in 2002 on number
of entries, number of DyeStat Elite marks, national rank of best
marks, and hypothetical 8-deep "scoring" of the two meets
as if the performances were made head to head. Comparisons are inevitable,
which is why we are doing it. Comparisons are "odious,"
as the poets have said, but Webster defines odious as "exciting
or deserving of hatred or repugnance." The reader can decide
which applies.
Not too much should be made of this comparison because
head-to-head competition is the only way to settle arguments in
track and field. NSI had the banked track advantage of the New York
Armory, the self-styled "fastest track in the world,"
vs. NIC's flat track at PG County Sportsplex in Landover MD.
The comparison is based on DyeStat Elite criteria,
which means four things: (1) Events not ranked in DyeStat Elite
are not included, (2) only US athletes are included; some events
at NSI were won by Canadians, (3) club teams are not included unless
we know the athletes are all from the same high school, and (4)
the best mark of an athlete or relay is ranked, whether it comes
in the prelims or finals.
The number of entries includes scratches, DQ's,
no shows, and DNF's appearing in the official scorer's file. If
scratches were eliminated before scoring, the number of entries
would be understated.
