those Rockford girls

They come in waves, these distance runners from Rockford MI. With eight girls running under 5:20 for 1600 meters, they are well equipped for a big relay meet like this one. On Friday, they won three relays in 4 hours and set a national record in one, the 4x1600, with a time of 20:14.89, with all four runners less than their best. They had reasons to be tired, with this meet squeezed in between a meet Thursday, 11 hours round trip driving, and a prom Saturday night. Who knows what they can do rested? Coach Brad Prins thinks he knows -- a sub-20 minute 4-mile relay at the adidas Outdoor Championships in Raleigh in June. That would shatter their own national record of 20:30.57 set at Raleigh last year.
