2007 State Track Meet
Predictions Boys Individual Running
Event - Doug Speck
Boys
Predictions 2007 California State Track & Field Meet
100 Meters
1. -Jahvid Best (Salesian, Richmond-NCS)
2. **Charles Saseun (Rancho Cucamonga-SS)
3. **Randall Carroll (Cathedral, LA-SS)
4. -Curtis Shaw (Lincoln, Stockton-SJ)
5. -Stanley Arukwe (West, Tracy-SJ)
6. -Kyle Alston (Hoover, Fresno-CE)
–
Last year’s 5th placer Best is “best,” with excellent
seasonal record and fine 10.44 (+1.4) Section run, with soph Saseun
looking super last week and ready to challenge. The rest of the top
six are interchangeable on any given day, with the nice quartering
wind at Hughes Stadium capable of cranking some very, very fast clockings
among the 2006 short sprint group.
200 Meters
1. -Bryshon Nellum (Poly, Long Beach-SS)
2. -Jahvid Best (Salesian, Richmond-NCS)
3. -Stanley Arukwe (West, Tracy-SJ)
4. -Kyle Alston (Hoover, Fresno-CE)
5. -Curtis Shaw (Lincoln, Stockton-SJ)
6. -Kianti Gix (Rio Americano, Sacramento-SJ)
–
Defending Champion Nellum will attempt to continue to work on his
gold medal haul here late in Saturday’s meet, with the nation’s
#1 performer at 20.58 able to pull off a quadruple win (4x1, 400,
200, & 4x4) with the help of his teammates that has never been
done by anyone. Best will be waiting should the Jackrabbit flash
tire in the least, with Arukwe a bit better here than in the 100
with the Sac Joaquin Champ on what is nearly a “home” track.
Alston streaked to a super 10.60-21.28 Central Section sprint double
and hopes to hold his form after a Section Meet a couple of weeks
back, with Shaw and Gix 21.30 and 21.31 local speedsters. Adam Long
(St. Bernard, Playa del Rey) leads a flock of challengers should
any of the above falter.
400 Meters
1. -Bryshon Nellum (Poly, Long Beach-SS)
2. -Nevin Guttierez (JW North, Riverside-SS)
3. -Remington Blair (Reedley-CE)
4. -Roman Gray (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove-SJ)
5. -Jason Ward (South, Bakersfield-CE)
6. -Jonathan Byrd (Carson-LA)
–
Nellum is the master of all preps in his ablility to gauge efforts
over a long sprint event, and watch him measure the field carefully
here in his sixth contest of the weekend (four in Friday’s
heats and the 4x1 on Saturday prior to this), as he hopes to lead
his team
to the title. Guttierez was runner-up to Nellum 46.38-46.79 last
year and has run himself into fine shape after an injury that slowed
him mid-season, and he will make Nellum run. Blair had a fine Central
section effort to edge Ward, with Gray a super all-arounder dangerous
here at
home.
Byrd
hopes
to chase home ahead of the rest of a good group pressing at 48 seconds
in the event.
800 Meters
1. -Cory Primm (Westlake, Westlake Village-SS)
2. -Nathaniel Richardson (Madera-CE)
3. -Ryan Gamboa (Upland-SS)
4. *Torion Bailey (Mayfair, Lakewood-SS)
5. -Ryan Martin (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM-SS)
6. -Blake McDowell (Montgomery, Santa Rosa-NC)
–
Defending Champ Primm has had his way this year on the way to nation-leading
1:49.50 clocking from Arcadia and four sub-1:51 meets, including
the last two weekends. Some in the field may have to deal with a
pace up front that they have never been close to, with Primm well
under 1:20 last weekend in the SS Finals. Richardson brings one lap
speed, with 4:15 1600 and Cross-Country 5k strength to his 1:52.24
seasonal best and potential to go faster. Gamboa was fifth last year
here, and has rounded nicely into shape after early season injury,
with Bailey the surprise of the season, the junior 1:52.38 two
weekends ago. Martin has
amazing range from 200 through 5000 meters, with a 1:53.89 best here,
with McDowell sub 1:54 and another with Fall Cross Country strength
that will bode him well with qualifying and finals action over two
days.
1600 Meters
1. -Chad Hall (Big Bear-SS)
2. -Hudson Andrews (Royal, Simi Valley-SS)
3 -Dylan Knight (La Sierra, Riverside-SS)
4. -Adam Cunningham (Milken Community, LA-SS) - grade mistake in
programs Adam is a Senior 2006-2007
5. -Austin Jett (Eastlake, Chula Vista-SD)
6. -Fawad Khan (Palos Verdes, PV Estates-SS)
–
Hall was run down last week by Andrews 4:09.10-4:09.19, with the
national cross-country champion Hall not able to let this come down
to a final 100 meter sprint again this week, as the talented Andrews
waaaaaaay under 30 seconds for the final half lap each of the last
two weekends and no sign of losing his great finish. Dylan Knight
has also closed in super style recently, with Cunningham the event
surprise of the year, showing no fear of Hall in their divisional
action in the south. Jett was sixth last year and Khan seventh in
that competition, both solid racers who appear ahead of a talented
pack breathing down their necks.
3200 Meters
1. -Michael Cybulski (Royal, Simi Valley-SS)
2. -Chad Hall (Big Bear-SS)
3. -Brendan Gregg (Davis-SJ)
4. -Dylan Knight (La Sierra, Riverside-SS)
5. **Chris Schwartz (Foothill, Bakersfield-CE)
6. *German Fernandez (Riverbank-SJ)
–
A couple of weeks back we know we would have been considered crazy
to have such a possiblity take place, but there is something magical
to Cybulski’s efforts in this event, with the defending champ
a stirring win over the doubling Mark Matusak (Loyola) here two years
ago. A group of studs have taken two of these titles during their
prep careers–Ralph Gamez (Berkeley) 1965-66, Ruben Chappins
(Excelsior) 1968-69, Eric Hulst (Laguna Beach) 1975-76, Jeff Nelson
(Burbank) 1978-79, Roman Gomez (Belmont) 1984-85, but no one has
ever taken three. It could be a magnificent win or less as the string
is drawn tight with the Royal star Cybulski’s preparation after
returning from injury late in the season. Hall will attempt to match
Rich Kimball (De la Salle, Concord) and Roman Gomez (Belmont) as
the only 1600-3200 double winner in this meet’s history, with
a magnificent peak this past December with his stirring National
Cross-Country
Championship
win. Local
star Gregg looks to take out his Davis HS career in style, with
a sub-9:00 3200 meter converted clocking from the April Arcadia Invitational.
Knight and his brother Spencer are capable of high placings with
dangerous finishes, with Schwartz a dangerous young talent who fears
no one and has impressed with his development. Fernandez is annother
underclass athlete who is an amazing talent running here close to
home, with Trabuco Hills teammates John Sullivan and Scott Blair
leading a talented “chase pack.”
110 Meter High Hurdles
1. -Terry Prentice (Diamond Ranch, Pomona-SS)
2. -Jeshua Anderson (Taft, Woodland Hills-LA)
3.. -Zion Babb (Alhambra-SS)
4. -Maurice Shaw (Colony, Ontario-SS)
5 -Rashad Smith (Pinole Valley-NCS)
6. -Trevor Habberstad (Canyon, Canyon Country-SS)
–
Defending Champ Prentice has ruled over all statewide during a fine
spring, with Anderson a couple of sub-14.00 clockings along the way.
Babb, a late season comer to the sport, is coming on strong, with
a 13.94 last week, with Shaw also under 14.00 in the Southern Section
State qualifier and a good seasonal record. Smith has been the Bay
area’s best, though lightly tested against the state’s
best, with all-arounder Habberstad 13.93 two weeks back.
300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles
1. -Jeshua Anderson (Taft, Woodland Hills-LA)
2. **Reggie Wyatt (JW North, Riverside-SS)
3. -Rashad Smith (Pinole Valley-NCS)
4. -Eric Hersey (Los Altos-CCS)
5. -Brian Law (Villa Park-SS)
6. -Kevin Lau (Schurr, Montebello-SS)
–
Anderson is part of a super group nationally in this event, with
the country’s #3 in the event at 35.75 capable of popping something
here to put him farther up the all-time lists. Wyatt is among US
Prep history’s top young hurdlers ever, with a 36.52 State
soph record last week close to the National Soph class record of
36.32 by Keron Clement (La Porte, Tx) from 2001. Smith was the winner
here at the Sacramento Meet of Champs, and still smarting from a
DQ here last year, with Hersey a CCS Champ coming on strong, and
the Law-Lau duo from the south good recent efforts in the 37.80's.
Local Avery White and the North’s Josh McOmber can challenge
here.
