Boys Predictions 2007 California State Track & Field
Meet
400 Meter Relay
1. Poly, Long Beach (SS)
2. JW North, Riverside (SS)
3. Rancho Cucamonga (SS)
4. Rio Mesa, Oxnard (SS)
5. Franklin (Elk Grove) (SJ)
6. James Logan, Union City (NCS)
–
Poly and North will hook up once again if everyone can secure the
baton through the prelims, with North 41.12-41.17 Section winners,
but Poly 40.71 when they let it all out two weeks previous. Rancho
Cucamonga continues its super string of talented athletes, with Charles
Saseun a screeching anochor leg last week in their 41.28 for third
down south. Rio Mesa, Oxnard has three sub-41.70's in the last month.
Franklin won the Sacramento Meet of Champions on this facility at
41.67, with Logan 41.72 last weekend to win the NCS.
1600 Meter Relay
1. Poly, Long Beach (SS)
2. JW North, Riverside (SS)
3. Rancho Cucamonga (SS)
4. Dominguez, Compton (SS)
5. Deer Valley, Antioch (NCS)
6. Edison, Fresno (CE)
Poly has Bryshon Nellum ready to do what it takes, but the North
crew could be tough at the end of a long state meet weekend, as they
have had folks drop some events along the way to focus on the four
lap baton event. The JWN crew may dig down for something special
for one of the state’s top coaches of the last half-century,
retiring Charles Leathers, in his final event with prep athletes
on the track. Rancho Cucamonga was mid-3:13's last week and ahead
of
Poly
into
the anchor leg. Dominguez (Compton) is coming on strong and 3:16.54
for fourth behind the above trio at the SS State Qualifier. Deer
Valley (NCS) is quickest from the Bay area, with Edison 3:16.94 along
the way in Section qualifying.
High Jump
1. -Jonathan Clark (Loyola, LA) (SS)
2. *Ray Nikzat (Lodi) (SJ)
3. -Chris Hicks (Palmdale) (SS)
4. Kenny Phillips (Central, Fresno) (CE)
5. -Daniel Kirkpatrick (Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo) (SS)
6. -Taylor Hobson (Upland) (SS)
–
We rubbed the crystal ball here and the picture came up cloudy, with
anyone of a half dozen who could walk away with the gold medal. We
like all-arounder Jonathan Clark of Loyola, with Ray Nikzat from
the Sac Joaquin Section with this as kind of a “home-pit.” Chris
Hicks had the top Section mark at 6-10 from last week, with Phillips
6-10 and 6-8 his last two area meets. Kirkpatrick has a 6-10 best
from earlier in the spring, with Hobson a fine all-arounder from
Upland who shows fine form. A flock of others with good PR’s
could break into the six.
Pole Vault
1. *Nico Weiler (Los Gatos) (CCS)
2. -Kyle Inks (Bret Harte, Altaville) (SJ)
3. *Blair Wallingford (Roseville ) (SJ)
4. -Connor Landry (Placer, Auburn) (SJ)
5. Jacob Mersino (Clovis East, Clovis) (CE)
6. *Griffin Simmons (Vista) (SD)
–
Weiler has five meets at 16-08 or better with a towering 17-06.25
best, with big CCS rival Casey Roche a no-height in area action that
elminated him from the road to this weekend. Kyle Inks PR’d
last week in this pit at 16-00, with the Sac Joaquin area very strong,
with Blair Wallingford, and Connor Landry solid seasons, Landry a
16-02 from mid-March. Mersino and Simmons hope to stay ahead of a
talented pack.
Long Jump
1. -Terry Prentice (Diamond Ranch, Pomona) (SS)
2. *Nelson Rosario (El Camino, Oceanside) (SD)
3. -Roman Gray (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove) (SJ)
4. -Josh Harrison (Rio Mesa, Oxnard) (SS)
5. -Darrell Catchings (Escondido) (SD)
6. -Gary Lee (Hoover, San Diego) (SD)
–
Terry Prentice needs someone to push him, with great all-around jumper
Nelson Rosario popping 24-02.25 last weekend. Gray was the Sacramento
Meet of Champs and Section titlest in this pit out near 24 feet,
with powerful Josh Harrison a flock of 23 foot meets this spring.
Catchings impressed with a 23-08 Section effort, with Lee the mid-season
National Leader off a 24-02.5 Arcadia win with slight injury of late.
Triple Jump
1. -Gyasi Rivers (Hollywood) (LA)
2. -Jonathan Clark (Loyola, LA) (SS)
3. -Ray Green (Ceres) (SJ)
4. *Nelson Rosario (El Camino, Oceanside) (SD)
5. -Christian Green (Crenshaw, LA) (LA)
6. -Bo Phouminavong (Bear Creek, Stockton) (SJ)
–
Rivers won over the top jumpers at Arcadia at 49-01.5, and had a
49-04.75w from his Section meet. Clark has also been out over 49
feet, with Green right at that figure in an improved spring of bounding.
Rosario is in the High Jump and Long Jump in addition to this event,
with the down-south Green, Christian, from Crenshaw, 48-05w in the
LA finals. Phouminavong has a mid-47 foot best in local Sac Joaquin
action.
Shot Put
1. -Joe Canavan (Palm Desert) (SS)
2. -Chris Krychev (Monte Vista, Danville) (NCS)
3. *Dayshan Ragans (Foothill, Bakersfield) (CE)
4. *Colin Quirke (Los Gatos) (CCS)
5. -Jesus Correa (Rosemead) (SS)
6. -Daniel Cruz (Barstow) (SS)
–
We will know if Canavan has caught one with the ruckus he creates
from the Shot Put area in the north end of the stadium if the 66
footer is hot! Krychev was 62-11 behind Joe’s 66-footer at
Arcadia, with Ragans a 64-01 dual meet best. Quirke has been hot
in CCS action, out near 62 feet lately, with Correa looking for his
first 60-footer at 59-09 and Cruz 60-04.25 two weeks back.
Discus
1. -Derek Johnson (Agoura) (SS)
2. *Dayshan Ragans (Foothill, Bakersfield) (CE)
3. *Blake Ayles (Lutheran, Orange) (SS)
4. -Jake Fuller (West Valley, Cottonwood) (No)
5. -Tom Nagengast (Paso Robles) (SS)
6. -Daniel Cruz (Barstow) (SS)
–
Johnson has dominated the event in the State this spring, with a
205-05 wind-blown best from mid-April. Ragans has two 190 foot plus
meets his eleventh grade year, with fellow junior Ayles 190-06 from
two weeks back. Fuller was a placer here last year, with an honor
strewn senior year in all activity and academic areas also having
him with a Discus state record for a cross-country runner for his
school. Nagengast has five 180 foot plus meets this spring, with
Cruz 178-11 last week.
