CIF-SS State Qualifying
Meet

Friday, May 25th, 2007 @ Cerritos College

Southern Section

Boys

B100
Pretty even start, but at 60 meters it was decided quickly, as super soph Charles Saseun of Rancho Cucamonga rocketed ahead of the pack to a near two meter win in a shocking 10.39 (wind was +1.9). Another soph, former national age-group champ Randall Carroll (Cathedral) was next at 10.57. For fun soph Rodney Storrs (Santiago, Corona) was next at 10.66. We are sure sophs have never gone 1-2-3 in the Southern Section Master’s Meet. New State soph record breaking Bryan Howard's low 10.40's from back a few years.

B200
Good group cranked around the turn, with Bryshon Nellum (20.58 last week for LB Poly) coming off the turn in lane 5 with a narrow lead over St. Bernard’s Adam Long. It was cool and breezy, and Bryshon casually lengthened it out to a 20.80w (+2.4) win over Long’s 21.47w and Chis Owusu (Oaks Christian) 21.74w.

B400
Nevin Guttierez (North, Riverside) was in 6, with Bryshon Nellum in 5 joining him through a 22.9 200. Joey Hughes (Poly) was third in lane 7, with Bryshon cruising to the lead around the turn, then slightly edging away down the homestretch to a comfortable win just under 47. Nellum 46.69 - Guttierez 47.30 - Joey Hughes 48.57.

B800
Cory Primm came to run! Out at 24.8 for the opening 200 he already had a big lead. At 51.1 he was in another world, with a continued “stretching out” from a good pack to 1:18.6 at the 600. It was a very windy evening, so one wondered if he could really hold together. The pack was back at 1:22.5 at the 600. Primm cruised in to a 1:50.4 win. Primm 1:50.41 - Torion Bailey (Mayfair) 1:53.34 - Ryan Martin 1:53.89 - Steve Norton 1:54.14.

B1600
Chad Hall (Big Bear) 30.0 and 61.3 with Dylan Knight (La Sierra) close and then back about 15y to Andrews (Royal) at the 400 - through 600 Hall continues to push at 1:32.2 with the field definitely spread out almost single file behind him. 800 should be 2:05 or so as Hall continues to push. Surprising 2:03.7 as Chad really continues to roll. He had a 15m lead by the head of the backstetch on lap 3, with 2:34.9 at 1000 meters (sub 31 second pace per 200 barely). 3:06.1 at the 1200 with 25 meters over Hudson Andrews (Royal). At 3:37.9 for 1400 meters Andrews was drawing close as Hall tired with a half lap to go, and the Royal star caught Hall down the stretch. Andrews was 4:09.10, Hall 4:09.19, Cunningham (Milken) 4:10.87, D Knight (La Sierra) 4:11.46, Shrick (Nordhoff) 4:12.24, Khan (Palos Verdes) 4:12.36, Haji (El Toro) 4:13.89. S. Knight (La Sierra) 4:14.88, Jonathan Shawel (Troy) 4:14.96,and Timothy Scott (Corona del Mar) 9th at 4:14.96, under the 4:16.62 at-large standard.

B3200
Chad Hall (Big Bear) 33.5 and 66.6 had a 10 meter lead over Scott Blair (Trabuco Hills). The pack reined Hall in a bit by the 600. 2:11.8 had the race almost single-file with Blair 10 meters down now. The group was single file through 1000m with a 33.5 to that point for that half lap, and Hall snuck a look back. He continued to power away to the 1200 at 3:17.8, with a 32.7 putting him out way ahead. It was getting cold and the wind had to be a bit tough down the backstretch with Hall 34.6 for the next 200 (3:52.4 at the 1400). Through the 1600 he would definitely be under 4:30, and he was 34.0 and 4:26.4 at four laps. The pack was 50 meters back of the Foot Locker National Cross Country champ. 35.0 for the next 200 into the wind, with the good field still in another area code. Hall rolled the homestretch up to the five lap point at 5:37.2 (35.9 200 as he was slowing a tad). A group of eight was about 40 meters back, with a 36.7 as the wind seemed to started to take a bit of a toll on Hall. 6:49.5 at six laps and 35.7 for that 200 with a four second lead. Guess who was making a move up out of the pack, it was Michael Cybulski from Royal, the two time state 3200 champ who was charging up to Hall with 550 meters to go after being out most of the spring with injury. 7:59.7 with one to go with Cybulski within 4 meters, with the Royal star ahead as they came off the turn into the backstretch. Hall was not giving up, with 8:32.9 at the 3k with Cybulski still narrowly leading before Hall went into over-drive, powering ahead and into the finish with a 30.5 and time in the low 9:03's. 9:03.50 - Cybulski 9:04.99 with Dylan Knight 9:05.18 with a huge finish- Blair 9:06.13 - Sullivan 9:08.49 - S Knight 9:09.43 - Morikawa 9:10.87 - Kostelink 9:11.24 - Linen 9:12.61 9 qualifiers for state.

BHH
After a few flights Terry Prentice (Diamond Ranch) broke out in the middle, with Zion Babb (Alhambra) closely following one lane inside of him. Babb, appearing in the sport in the last one-third of the season, was never able to close down much of the meter and a half that Prentice had gained by late race and Terry was a comfortable winner. Prentice 13.81- Babb 13.94 - M. Shaw (Colony) 13.98 Walker (Dominguez) 14.14 - Habberstad (Canyon) 14.18 - Ken Shaw (San Jacinto) 14.25 - Hines (LB Poly) 14.30

BIH
Camron Stepney (San Gorgonio) was out rolling early in lane 7, with soph Reggie Wyatt (North, Riverside) moving up on the turn to take the lead and he raced away to a super 36.52 win over Brian Law (Villa Park) 37.77. State soph record for Wyatt with his personal best here.

B400Re
North (Riverside) led over LB Poly into leg #1's hand-off, with Bryshon Nellum bringing the Jackrabbits back up on leg 2, but North led into the anchor. North was a bit off on the final pass, and Poly closed to nearly catch them, with Rancho Cucamonga streaking up on the inside. 41.12 for North the winner and 41.17 for Poly - Rancho Cucamonga 41.28 - remember this is a qualifying meet with no team awards.

B1600Re
Long Beach Poly was out nicely on leg 1, with North moving into the lead as Reggie Wyatt put North into the lead with a 46.5 second leg. North continued to fly thorugh leg 3, with anchor Nevin Guttierez with about a 5 meter lead over Rancho Cucamonga and Long Beach Poly, anchored by Bryshon Nellum on the anchor. Bryshon moved up to Nevin, the leader by the second turn, then raced down the homestretch to the win with Poly off a 45.0 leg, as North and Guttierez was 45.9 in second.  Poly was 3:11.17, North 3:11.73 (#3 time nation), Rancho Cucamonga 3:13.54 (#6 time US), and Dominguez 3:16.54.

BHJ
Chris Hicks (Palmdale) was the winner at 6-10 on his third trial at that height, as three others joined in attempts at that height, with 6-08 clearances, with Taylor Hobson (Upland) and Daniel Kirkpatrick (Trabuco Hills) tied for second, and Jonathan Clark (Loyola) fourth there.

BPV
Daniel Turvey (Dos Pueblos) topped four at 15-00 for the win, with Dusty Brown (St. Paul), Chip Reiter (Chino Hills), and Hoku Ho (Temple City) also over that standard. Justin Matoesian (Crespi) took the fifth place to state at 14-06.

BLJ
Terry Prentice (Diamond Ranch) was powering early in the evening here, with 23-08.25w (+2.2) and 23-11.25 (+0.5), with Josh Harrison (Rio Mesa) 23-03.25 (+1.5) on his second jump. Prentice took a third jump, 22-11.75 (-0.8) then passed his final 3 with the hurdles to focus on. Ryan Butts (Antelope Valley) was 22-09.75 (+0.4) in third.

BTJ
Jonathan Clark (Loyola) continued his super year of jumping with a 49-02.5w (+2.4) win on his opener, had a 48-08w (+2.2), then retired for the evening. Emmanuel Neizer (Rancho Cucamonga) 47-04.5w (+2.8), Ryan Swafford (Vista Murrieta) 47-03.5 (+0.2), and Xavier Townsend (San Gorgonio) 47-01.75w (+3.2) were over the at-large standard with Tony Burnett (Mayfair) 46-08 (+2.0) also moving to state.

BSP
Joe Canavan (Palm Desert) interestingly found himself behind through four throws with a foul, 58-07.75, foul, and foul. Jesus Correa (Rosemead) was the leader at 59-09 before Canavan exploded to 64-10.25 and 64-10.25 duplicates on his final two efforts for the win. Daniel Cruz (Barstow) was 57-01 for third.

BDT
Derek Johnson (Agoura) ended it early with a second throw 194-02 as Blake Ayles (Lutheran, Orange), 190-06 last week (Johnson was 196-04) moved up from 177-03 on his opener to a 182-11 fifth throw for second. Tom Nagengast (Paso Robles) was 179-00 in fourth, with Daniel Cruz (Barstow) 178-11, Dari Saber (Arroyo Grande) 177-06, and Kyle Wilson (AG) 177-02, to have six past the at-large standard of 174-07.

G100
Very late recall the first time the athletes were out (block slippage?). Lots of people in red in this event, with that color up front early. Shealeisha Mitchell (Palmdale) made a big move between 50 and 70 meters, but she was run down by Alicia King (Rancho Verde) and Yasmin Woodruff (St. Mary’s) and the pack. Wind was +2.9 King 11.68w (RV) - Woodruff 11.69w - Reid (LB Poly) 11.84w - Davis (Highland frosh) 11.86w - Hornsby (RV) 11.86w - Mitchell (Palmdale) 11.86w - Stephans (Dominguez) 11.88w.

G200
New young sprint star born here! Good 200 field battled around the turn, with Brianna Atkins (Bonita) and on the inside Alicia King (Rancho Verde) out in front leading. On the outside in maroon frosh Jessica Davis, who does not seem to have a deep history in the sport as a frosh at Highland of Palmdale, hung in there and surprisingly beat some good folks with her 24.06w (+2.4). Atkins was next at 24.07w, with Hilliard (Mayfair) 24.28w.

G400
Brianna Atkins (Bonita, last year at Rancho Cucamonga) took it out in Lane 6, with Jasmine Joseph (LB Poly) slowly working her way up around the turn and into the final straight. The Poly star edged away form the field, with about six others moving up and appearing to have nearly all finish within about 3 meters at the finish, with Joseph mid-54's. Joseph 54.29 - Atkins 55.29 - A. Cooper 55.44 - B. Harper 55.56 - A. Weaver 55.56 - Eaton 55.57 - Hilliard 55.63 - C. Davis 55.94.

G800
Anniya Louis (Culver City) showed strength last week, and led her at 29.1 at the 200. National leader Emily Dunn (Esperanza) moved up to take the lead aggressively at the 400 at 61.6 and she raced away from a good group. She was 1:34.4 at the 600 and finished in another area code at 2:06.48. Lewis 2:10.37 - Foley 2:10.47 - DiSiena 2:10.82 - Williams 2:11.20 -

G1600
Great field with Anna Sperry (Simi) 35.7 and 72.4 at the half and lap. Babcock was second, with Murakami, Buckley, and Hayes next. At 600 meters 1:49.4, fairly leisurely for this group. 2:26.3 had Spery with a five meter lead over Babock, with positions not changed as no racing had really started. No one in the field was really left behind yet. At 1000 Meters they were 3:02.7, with Sperry about 6-8 meters ahead of the pack. 3:39.6 had Sperry still ahead by 10 meters over Babock, with 10 within 15 meters of the lead. With 200 meters to go Shelby Buckley took off and raced away to the win at 4:46.80 - Tarver (Serrano super closing final straight) 4:48.38 - Babock 4:48.67 - Sperry 4:49.01 - Murakami 4:49.47 - Damon 4:51.75 - Collison (Crescenta Valley) 4:54.84 - Vanessa Hancock (Brea) 4:54.91 - Hilary May 4:55.54 - Hilary Hayes (Edison) 4:57.38 - Martinez (Burroughs, B) 4:58.82, and Shadeh Tabatabai (Mira Cosa) 4:58.87 - At large 4:59.23 so everyone in the field goes to state.

G3200
Great group (12 at 10:51.34 from last week or better with Christy Adamyk (Glendora) the early leader at 76.6. The pack cruised along 10 meters behind her with Anna Sperry and Shannon Murakami next. 2:36.2 at the 800 with the pack sitting back about 20 meters at 2:40. 3:57.1 at the 1320 with the pack closing down on the leader. Sarah Cummings (Corona del Mar) and Anna Sperry led the tight pack behind Adamyk, and they were up to her by the 1500 meter mark. 5:18.0 had all twelve in the field within 15 meters. Sperry and Cummings went by Adamyk on the start of lap 5 with Murakami, Christine Babcock and Stephanie Felix next. 6:39.6 was an 81 second lap, with 10:46.21 the at-large time needed by those in the field to crowd up the state meet finals field. Pack of 10 was all within 10 meters at five and a half laps, with only Jessica Nunez (South Hills) back 12 meters and Katie Dunn (Saugus), who appeared to stumble after the 1600 only behind. 8:00.9 had another 81 second lap, with Crescenta Valley’s Rchel Lange and Claire Collison start to fade a bit from the group now of 8. Sperry had 9:18.8 with one to go and took off, winning easily.
Sperry 10:26.65, Adamyk 10:32.67, Anna Martinez (Whittier) 10:35.16, Babcock 10:35.62, Murakami 10:36.73, Cummings 10:36.80, Felix 10:37.35, Dunne (San  Clemente) 10:38.85, Collison (Crescenta Valley) 10:44.14, and Katie Dunn (Saugus) 10:45.93.

GHH
Partway through the event Kiani Profit way out in lane 9 was ahead of the middle of the track pack, and she simply never came back, with her teammate Jalisa Williams in lane 8 also up there - amazingly the duo went 1-2 at 14.04 and 14.17!
Profit 14.04 out of lane 9, Jalisa Williams 14.17, Natalie Roy 14.21, Gina Deckard 14.27, Carter 14.27, Finley 14.32, Kirkland 14.52.

GIH
Kiani Profit (Muir) had a great Highs race, with London Finley, a fine age-grouper a few years back, impressing as she took the lead part-way through the turn and lead into the straightaway. At Hurdle six Profit showed better momentum to move into the lead, with Finley keeping the fine Muir senior honest right until the end. Profit 42.17 - Finely 42.26 - Carter (Claremont) 42.76 - Pearson (San Marcos) 42.82 - .

G400Re
Rancho Verde and LB Poly rolled into the first exchange very close, with RV a narrow lead out of leg #2. Into the anchor leg Rancho Verde had a definite lead, and they flew to a 6-8 meter win over LB Poly at 45.74, the nations’ #2 time of the year - Poly 46.60 - Wilson 47.01 - Centennial 47.05

G1600Re
Poly 56.5 was out with Wilson leading leg 1 with the Wilson #2 runner hitting the backstretch hard to have a 12-15 meter lead at one time. The Bruins (Wilson) held the lead into the exchange, and stretched it out during leg number 3, as North moved up to challenge Poly for second. Wilson was way out at the exchange off a 55.8 third leg, with Poly, North and Woodbridge next. Wilson was gone, with Jasmine Joseph it looked like closing really well for Poly on Wilson in the lead in the final 150. When Joseph came to within about two meters of the Wilson anchor the Bruin anchor suddenly fell to the track and Poly raced past for the win with a 54.4 leg. The rest of a fast pack raced past, and the Wilson anchor did get up to finish, appearing just short of the State qualifying mark of 3:53.38. Poly was 3:45.69, Centennial finished second at 3:49.33, with Woodbridge 3:49.45, North 3:50.37, Aliso Niguel 3:51.17, Rancho Verde 3:53.58, and Wilson, sadly in 3:54.37 just short of the at-large time--they deserved another chance next week at state.  .

GHJ
Ashley Smith (Millikan, Long Beach) continued a fine ninth grade year with a 5-08 win here. Camilla Dencer (West Valley Christian), last year at Louisville HS, was next at 5-06, with Jessica Robson (Newport Harbor), Tara Richmond (LB Poly), and Zania Akeh (Notre Dame, SO) tied for third at 5-04.

GPV
Allison Stokke (Newport Harbor) what was announced at 13-10, but turned out on the results sheet to be 13-03.5. She tried 14-00 with the display along the way defintely showing 13-10, so wonder what the story was.  Katelyn Beighton (Los Alamitos) was 12-02 in second.

GLJ
Soph Karyn Dunn (Diamond Ranch) was two fouls, 18-00, then 19-01.5 (0) to move up through the pack for the win, as Ashtynn Baltimore (Marlborough) was 19-00.5w (+2.5) on her second jump. Whitney Liehr (Palos Verdes) was 18-10.5 (+1.3) on her fourth jump for third place.

GTJ
Melissa Keltner (Chino Hills) came in at 37-04.5 from last week and rose a bit of a breeze (+3.2 mps) to a big 39-06.5second effort that held up for the win as it was getting a bit chilly and blustery (for around here). Madline LeDuc (Glendora) was right at +2.0 mps for a big PR at 39-05.00 in second, with Amanda Hunter (Marlborough) 39-04.5w (+3.4) in third, and Whitney Liehr (Palos Verdes) 39-02.25 (+1.9) in fourth.

GSP
Hilary Fraser (El Toro) and Whitney Ashley (North, Riverside) opened up at 40-03.25, with Fraser blasting 44-03.5 on her second throw to finish it off, and take it all. Ify Agwuenu (Ayala, Chino Hills) was 42-07 on her thrid throw to move into second, with Ashley’s mark holding on for third ofer Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (Paramount) 41-03.  Teresa Loya (St. Joseph, SM) was the 5th qualifier to state at 39-11, with a 40-10 At-Large those five go to Sacramento.

GDT
Double win for Hilary Fraser, with the El Toro Orange County star 156-02 on her fourth throw for the win after super soph Kayla Kovar (Burroughs, Ridgecrest) improved her PR twice to 152-00 on her opener and 152-02 on her second throw. Christine Weinrich (Arroyo Grande) was third at 142-01, Bonner (Chaparral) 140-08, Laich (Esperanza) 139-08, Snyder (Saugus) 139-05, Morgan (Ventura) 138-08, and Garza (Paso Robles) 135-09, with the at-large 134-08, so eight go from the section to state.
