Tiera Hillard of Mayfair runs the sprints. Stephanie Felix of La Mirada excels in the distances. Hillard and Felix, though, share something in common when it comes to their dominance in Suburban League track.

Hillard and Felix were named the girls’ co-most valuable athletes for the second year in a row at the Suburban League finals at La Mirada High on Friday night.

It was the third time in the last two years that Hillard and Felix have shared Athlete of the Meet honors. They also earned the honor at the L.A. County Championships last month when Felix allowed Hillard to take the medal home. On Thursday, Felix got first dibs on the award.

Hilliard, a senior who advanced to the Southern Section Division II 100 and 200 finals last season, set meet records of 24.85 in the 200 meters and 57.66 in the 400 and ran on the Monsoons victorious 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 that ran 49.64 and 4:03.84.

Felix set meet records in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. She ran 5:13.56 in the 1,600 to smash a record of 5:31.0 set in 1977 and won the 3,200 in 11:06.54 to break the previous record by almost 38 seconds.

On Tuesday, the junior ran a league record 2:19.00 in the 800 preliminaries. Felix, who placed seventh in the 2006 state 3,200 final, though, decided to scratch from the race after a long discussion with coach Ralph Casas to focus on the 1,600 and 3,200 for next week’s Southern Section Division II preliminaries at Moorpark High on May 12.

In the boys’ competition, seniors David Thomas of Cerritos and Lequan Lewis of Artesia were named co-athletes of the meet by a vote of coaches.

Thomas cleared 15-0 in the pole vault eclipsed one of the league’s oldest records set in 1978 by seven inches. Lewis won the 100 in 11.12, the 200 in 22.33 and ran on the Pioneers’ victorious 4 x 100 relay that clocked 42.84.

Suburban League cross country champion Hector Vega of Norwalk won the 1,600 (4:33.24), the 3,200 (10:08.64) and finished second in the 800 (2:03.09).

Mayfair junior Torian Bailey completed a demanding 400-800 double with wins in 49.73 and 2:00.64 with only one event separating the races.

Juniors Lorne Bowles of Cerritos and Jessica Hala of Norwalk were other double winners. Bowles won the 110 hurdles (15.15) and 300 intermediates (40.66). Hala swept the girls’ shot put (31-8 ¾) and discus (119-6).
