Individual Race Predictions
DIVISION II
Doug Speck - Editor DyeStatCal

The following predictions are an attempt to predict the State Meet
Finals finish in Fresno. Emphasis is on "end of season" performances, with
consideration given to major "in-season" heads up races in major competitions
around the state

Boys Division II

1. -Mikel Thomas (Clovis-CE) Second here last year and a sub 3200 star in Track (8:59.81 exactly), Thomas was 15:10 here in the Clovis Invitational and 15:12 a couple weeks back in the Section meet. Whether he will race for a controlled win to save something for next week’s Foot Locker Western Regional, or make an effort to climb on the Senior all-time list here with a sub-15 clocking could be an interesting choice. Final local race for one of the Central Section’s all-time greats!

2. -Kent Morikawa (Torrance-SS) - The Southern Section champ with a 15:02 best on the Mt. SAC course, Kent has run 9:11.16 for 3200m on the track, and was 15:28 here in the Clovis Invitational. He is a very solid “racer,” and was fourth here last year.

3. -Muluken Beressa (Monte Vista, Spring Valley-SD) - Super “fastest of day” Section Finals divisional win way down south, the thin African-American who was fifth here last year hopes to move up. He was 4:22.95 and 9:37.19 on the track last spring.

4. -Travis Kuhlman (Westview, San Diego-SD) - Has had a very solid season down south, with an excellent 15:16 at the Stanford Invitational along the way. He was top thirty at this level last Fall, and raced a fine 9:25.26 for 3200m last spring in track.

5. -Jonathan Peterson (Clovis-CE) - Strong local athlete, Peterson was 15:22 here at the Clovis Invitational and top thirty in the division last year. He has fine 4:17.99 and 9:25.95 distance bests on the track in the spring.

6. -Phil McKennan (Jesuit, Carmichael-SJ) - Sac Joaquin champ was winner in a super competitive Division II division there. He leads one of the nations’ top teams, and had a fine 15:29 run at the Stanford Invite earlier this Fall. On the track he has run 9:24.55 for 3200m.

7. -Victor Bonilla (St. John Bosco, Bellflower-SS) - Runner-up to Morikawa down South, Victor was 15:29 here at the Clovis Invitational, and has a fine 15:11 seasonal best on the Mt. SAC facility. He raced 9:27.38 in track for 3200m.

8. -Ryan Cosens (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills - SJ) - Fine senior, and Sac Joaquin runner up, has put together a great fall full of fun travels! He was 15:34 at Stanford, 15:43 here at the Clovis Invite, and was 15:26 at the Mt. SAC Invitational down south! A 9:28.32 3200 runner in the spring,

9. -Evan Watcehmpino (Jesuit, Sacramento-SJ) - You say Jesuit is a tough team, then you are right, with this veteran of the championship wars hoping to help lead his squad to a big win here. He was 15:31 here at the Clovis Invite and had a 15:27 run at Stanford. Watch the red and gold pack in the top twenty here.

10. -Matthew Petrillo (Los Gatos-CE) This division is deep, deep if we have one as outstanding as Petrillo back this far. Would not surprise us if he were to move up more than a few with a strong effort here! CCS Champ with a fine run there, the 4:22.71 1600 star in track was also 15:19 at Mt. SAC and 15:37 at Stanford along the way this fall.

Girls Division II

1. *Christine Babcock (Woodbridge, Irvine-SS) - State 1600 champ with a shocking 4:41.29 last June has not slowed a tad, ripping into the Fall harrier season with a Course Record at her own facility in the school’s popular Invitational, and racing through a series of impressive runs topped by a 17:00 clocking last weekend at Mt. SAC in the Southern Section affair. Babcock has taken her fall running to another level this season, and as the division’s top returnee (last year’s champ Kauren Tarver moved up to Division I with her school) it will be fun to see how fast she can go!

2. -Anna Sperry (Simi Valley-SS) - Tough Ventura County star followed up on her 4:46.77 spring 1600 best with a great series of recent efforts, with a fine 17:14 last weekend for second behind Babcock in the Southern Section affair. Anna was fourth at this level last Fall.

3. -Alex Kosinski (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills-SJ) - Another of the nation’s best around the oval, Alex has 2:10.82 (800)-4:42.29 (mile) and 10:40.36 (3200) bests. She finished a super fall season last year as a National Individual Finalist in the Foot Locker series, but was held back most of this fall season with a minor foot injury that everyone was very careful with. She has come on strongly over the last few weekends, will be a big factor in this event, hoping for higher than her fifth in this contest last November.

4. ***Jacque Taylor (Casa Grande, Petaluma- NCS) - Frosh star has put together a great first season at the prep level, traveling far and wide to face the state’s best with real success. The NCS champ should be able to run under 18:00 here at Woodward, which would make her one of the fifteen top ninth graders in course history!

5. -Hannah Dillard (Chico - No) - Strong northern star who cranked a particularly fine 17:43 effort in late September’s Stanford Invitational, Hannah was tenth in this division last year. She has run 11:16.89 on the track for 3200m.

6. *Janina Emery (University, Irvine-SS) Fine eleventh grader really comes to run, with an excellent 17:32 last weekend in the Southern Section Finals at Mt. SAC for third in that tough area.

7. *Stephanie Felix (La Mirada - SS) - Deserved a spot here last year and would have walked away with an individual medal (as did six of the seven who were ahead of her in the 2005 SS meet). Cranked a 10:41.52 in the spring for 3200m, and has blazed as quick as 17:19 on the Mt. SAC course this fall. She was 18:22 here in the Clovis Invitational.

8. **Deborah Maier (Ponderosa, Shingle Springs-SJ) - Sac Joaquin runner-up to Kosinski has had a fine fall, highlighted with a fine 18:15 at the Stanford Invitational. Deborah was 11:17.15 for 3200m last spring in track.

9. **Stephanie Barnett (Leland, San Jose-CCS) - CCS Champ is another who has roamed far and wide with Invitational successes! Snappy 100 meter Section finals win, with 18:30 clocking here in the Clovis Invite and 18:31 at the Stanford Invite.

10. ***Nicole Hood (Carondelet, Concord-NCS) - another super frosh, Nicole has led a stunning (and young) Carondelet squad that totalled 25 points in winning the NCS Division II title, with Hood second in that contest to fellow frosh Jacque Taylor. Running for a team always adds a tad of momentum to one’s effort, and the fine first year athlete will be dangerous this weekend!
