Individual Race Predictions
DIVISION I
Doug Speck - Editor DyeStatCal

The following predictions are an attempt to predict the State Meet
Finals finish in Fresno. Emphasis is on "end of season" performances, with
consideration given to major "in-season" heads up races in major competitions
around the state

Boys Division I

1. -Michael Cybulski (Royal, Simi Valley-SS) - Two Time State 3200 Champ hopes to lead his highly ranked nationally squad to a repeat win,and should be ready to roll. Strong 14:54 last weekend at Mt. SAC (14:45 seasonal best there), and fine 15:03 runs at both Stanford and Clovis this Invitational season. Kind of his race to win or lose. 8:53.85 last spring for two miles in track.

2. -Spencer Knight (La Sierra, Riverside-SS) - One of the two patriotic red, white, and blue clad twin brothers in the top pack, the 4:09.58 1600 track star from La Sierra has two sub 15 minute Mt. SAC clockings in the last month under his belt and a third place in the tough Southern Section from last week. Fourteenth here last year Div I.

3. -JT Sullivan (Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo-SS) - Solid senior has just been nails all season long, with his school’s “up-front” pack among the nation’s best during a super fall! He was fourth in the Southern Section Meet last weekend, and has run 14:58 at Mt. SAC this fall. 9:14.36 for 3200 in the spring. Twentieth in this race last November.

4. -Brendan Gregg (Davis-SJ) - Super run in the Section meet a couple of weeks back as his team peaked in superb style. Stunning 14:47 winner at Stanford, and with an effort like that here he could take it all. Was 15:16 at the Mt. SAC Invite and was 15:27 at the Clovis Invitational on this course in October. His squad has made tremendous strides since September and is racing for the win here, which adds motivation to their individual runners’ efforts. 9:23.88 for 3200 on the track. Eighteenth Division I last fall in this contest.

5. -Eric Avila (Bonita Vista, Chula Vista-SD) - Section titlest has had a super season of “big-meet” runs, with 15:12 at Stanford, 15:15 at Clovis on this course, and a 15:07 at the Mt. SAC Invite. Personally pointing for a spot in the Foot Locker Finals in his hometown, a top effort here would be a good lead in to the Regionals for the 9:18.00 3200 runner. Seventh here last year.

6. -Hudson Andrews (Royal, Simi Valley-SS) - Answered the call big-time last week in the Section Meet with very impressive second to teammate Michael Cybulski at Mt. SAC in 14:57. Some other very fine efforts during the fall, including a 15:17 at Stanford in late September. 9:22.54 for 3200 on the track last spring. Ninth here last year for his Championship team.

7. *Riley Sullivan (Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo-SS) - Another part of that potent “up-front” Trabuco pack that is so dangerous, and the other half of the brother combo, Riley was fifth in the Southern Section meet last weekend in a fine 15:04 at Mt. SAC and will always come to give a great effort. 9:32.78 last spring as a soph for 3200m in track.

8. -Dylan Knight (La Sierra, Riverside) - the 4:09.88 1600 star who is the other half of the La Sierra twin combo is never separated too far from his brother at any finish. Sixth in the very competitive Southern Section race at Mt. SAC at 15:13, he should be part of a group from that area that should dominate this contest.

9. -Luis Guevara (El Rancho, Pico Rivera-SS) Another from the South who has had a great Fall season, including 15:40 Stanford and a 15:37 Clovis Invitational run here. He has run 15:01 at Mt. SAC this Fall, and was seventh in the SS last week. Top thirty here last year in this race.

10. *Diego Estrada (Alisal-CCS) Bothered by stomach injury in the CCS meet a couple weeks back, if he has recovered he could move up in the pack. Had a spirited, successful fall, with travels up and down the state. 15:29 at the Stanford Invitational, 15:20 here on the Clovis course in their Invitational, and 15:14 in a Mt. SAC Sweeps race on that facility. Could bust up the Southern Section domination ahead of him if he’s ready to go. 9:19.12 on the track for 3200m in a CCS runner-up effort last spring.

Girls Division I

1. *Kauren Tarver (Serrano, Phelan-SS) - As talented as any prep runner in the United States, Kauren is making a habit of coming back from injury in spectacular style, with a big win at the Southern Section meet last weekend. A “rhythm” runner with deceptive power, she is again on a roll with 2004 (9th grade) and 2005 (10th grade) fall harrier seasons that had her simply finish as the best in her grade at the Foot Locker National Finals! 4:55.37 (1600) and 10:48.42 (3200) clockings during a shortened spring 2006 track season.

2. -Shannon Murakami (Saugus-SS) - Defending Champ here, Murakami will be smarting from a 17:11-17:13 loss to Tarver last week and come loaded for a great effort here. Leads one of the nation’s fine teams with a sterling group effort last weekend, with that group behind her providing an impetus for something special individually. Part of the state’s greatest group ever of 1600 runners last spring in track with a 4:43.04 for third in state and 10:35.9 best for 3200 on the oval.

3. -Lauren Saylor (Buchanan, Clovis-CE) - One of the area’s all-time greats will attempt to go out on a course she knows like the back of her hand in style. A super Invitational season, with 17:27 clockings at Stanford, 17:45 in the Clovis Invite here, and a 17:10 run at Mt. SAC. 10:37.02 on the track for 3200m. A former Foot Locker Finalist.

4. *Katy Andrews (La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad-SD) - second here last year, Andrews has put together another great fall season, including a 17:47 at the Stanford Invitational, and comfortable Section title last weekend. 4:56.25 Section Champ over 1600m during track season.

5. *Elizabeth Coe (Fountain Valley-SS) - Leader of another super squad that was a fine second to Saugus last weekend in the Southern Section, Coe has provided solid leadership this season. Was a fine third to Tarver and Murakami in the Section meet and a number of good efforts during a high pressured fall. Fine 10:43.05 3200m best in spring track. Fifth here last year as a sophomore.

6. *Katja Goldring (Hamilton, LA-LA) - Set an LA City Course Record on the Pierce College lay-out that has been run forever by some very good folks! Showed up to state track meet last June and more than mildly impressed with a 10:37.08 3200 for fourth place! Aggressive racing style and was second to Coe in a warm afternoon Mt. SAC Invitational contest in October, with her reaction to and performance within this talented pack much anticipated.

7. -Andrea Jacobs (Vista-SD) - part of a fine group from the far south, Andrea was second in the Section Finals to Katy Andrews and appears to be peaking in fine style. Was thirteenth at this level last year and looks to move up! Quick 2:14.57 800 star in spring track.

8. *Ellie Keene (Rancho Buena Vista, Vista-SD) Much improved star this fall for the San Diego section power, Ellie had a fine race at Stanford with a 17:46 clocking, and was 17:25 during the Mt. SAC Invitational. Third in the San Diego Section Finals this Fall, that’s where she finished in the spring section meet in track over 3200m at 11:07.32.

9. **Alex Dunne (San Clemente-SS) - Fine soph is coming on like gangbusters after foot problem that kept her away from running most of the summer. Orange County talent bound for some big things with an impressive fourth last week in the very tough Southern Section Division I contest at Mt. SAC in 17:49. 10:54.25 3200 last year as a frosh.

10. -Christy Adamyk (Glendora-SS) - One tough division when a 2005 Foot Locker National Finalist is picked for only tenth place! Christy probably would not surprise us if she moved up move than a few spots when the going gets tough here, with a fine 18:00 at the Stanford Invite along the way this Fall. One of the nation’s best in track over 3200m at 10:19.83.
