Big Bear Boys & Yucca Valley Girls Crowned DeAnza League Champions for
2006.

For the 3rd year in a row Big Bear domintated the DeAnza league boys' side,
scoring a team total of only 25 pts. This year's champion came from the winning
Bears, but may not be the name you were expecting. Alberto Solis took the
race over at the one mile mark and never looked back. He cruised to a 17
sec victory over his nearest competitor, Fansisco Fuentes of Desert Hot Springs.
Marcus Buckles of 29 Palms finished 3rd in 16:41. Although the day started
out on the cool side, the sun began to shine hard on the challenging 3 mile
course at Riverside Community College in Moreno Valley, raising the temerature
to 85 degrees at race time. To make matters worse, there was lingering smoke
in the air from the Esperanza fire, which made breathing a challenge in itself.
Team competition results changed slightly as The Trojans of Yucca Valley
outlasted the Rams of Desert Mirage to claim 2nd place in the overall standings.
Other First Team All-League runners were Cody Dodd (BB) 16:56, Chris Jasperson
(BB) 16:57, Tommy Stevenson (YV) 17:04, & Seth Brown (BB) 17:08.
The girls competition played out just like the previous 2 meets with Yucca
Valley capturing its 3rd league title in 4 years. Fast rising sophomore Katarina
Ratkowiak, led from start to finish to claim DeAnza League MVP honors from
teammate Emily Snyder. The "Kat-a-Rak's" time was 19:38 to Snyer's
19:58. Senior Julia Cline of Big Bear placed 3rd in a time of 20:27. Yucca
Valley (25 pts.) took 6 of the top 8 spots, with Big Bear claiming the other
2. Big Bear girls ended their DeAnza competition placing 2nd overall with
38 pts. Desert Hot Springs got the 3rd and final spot for CIF with 91 pts.
Rounding out the First Team All-League were Sara P:resley (YV) 20:57, Cassidy
Tokunaga (BB) 21:01, Janine Watkins (YV) 21:31, & Chelsie Rexroat (YV)
21:42.
The JV boys were dominated by Big Bear, scoring a perfect 15pts to Yucca
Valley's 63. Brennen Halliday of Big Bear led the way in 17:37.
Sam Mosely of Big Bear won the girls competition in 22:49. Yucca Valley
captured the team title with 15 pts.
