Plot Lines 2006 State Meet
Running Event Order Saturday:
Boys 400m Relay
--Southern Section top six times from last week, who will pass the stick
best to win? Lincoln of Stockton, Logan, Vista, and Mt. Whitney (Visalia)
have the bodies or were comfortable section winners with ability to
pop something and move up!
Girls 400 Relay
--team favorites Wilson (Long Beach) had DeAna Carson not finish the
100 last week, with the Bruins back to the pack a tad if she passes
on the baton event! Rancho Verde, Poly (LB), Mt. Pleasant, and Logan
have ability to run in the 45's, so it could be one of the deepest
state races ever!!
Boys 1600 Meters
--Last year's race had doubler Mark Matusak not wishing a torrid pace,
with the contest as much action as usually takes place in the mosh
pit, with AJ Acosta DQ'd along the way before Matusak won at 4:10.72.
Brand new ball game in 2006, with Acosta and Coe matched up and ready
to go, with the way this develops maybe the race of the meet! Emotional
Acosta and cool-headed Coe bit of a contrast that may play out in some
way.
Girls 1600 Meters
--Top six off Section meets have all run under 4:50, with Jordan Hasay
only one missing from what could be a group equal to any in State History.
St. Geme amazing acceleration of late, with a 3:28 1200 at Arcadia
and the possibility of some company this go-round in that time range
leaving anything possible (keep the all-time lists handy!).
Boys 110 Meter High Hurdles
--Explosive David Klech better be on his game, with Terry Prentice ready
to roll and Lance Babb (Alhambra) right with Prentice most of the way
last week and with Klech at the Arcadia event earlier this year. Determined
Richard Sherman (Dominguez) was under 14 last week.
Girls 100 Meter Hurdles
--Kimyon Broom (Serra) wants that state title after a runner-up effort
last year, with Julian Purvis (St. Elizabeth, Oakland) the national
leader on the watch this spring with a 13.60 and sharp 13.72 last weekend.
Vashti Thomas (Mt. Pleasant) will be in the hunt, with DeAna Carson
(Wilson, LB) healthy here adding mightily to the team cause with her
individual efforts.
Boys 400 Meter Dash
--Bryshon Nellum (Poly, LB) was 46.20 for the Arcadia win, still the
national leader, with the Jackrabbit junior with the uncanny ability
to gauge his efforts so carefully probably thinking to the 200 and
4x4 baton event as he attempts to stay ahead of Nevin Gutierrez (North,
Riverside) and the pack.
Girls 400 Meter Dash
--Hot the last two weekends with 52.56 National leader and 53.29 State
Qualifier, defending State titlest Sa'de Williams (Rancho Cucamonga)
is rounding into championshp shape, with a good group chasing.
Boys 100 Meter Dash
--The contest for fastest on the block, San Fernando Valley, greater
Los Angeles area, State, Nation, and world at their age may be sorted
out as defending champ Jamere Holland (Taft, Woodland Hills), an eased
off 10.64 LA City winner takes on local rival Rodney Glass (Notre Dame,
Sherman Oaks), who battled Jonathan Williams (Temecula Valley) 10.37-10.38
last weekend. The trio sits #1 (Glass 10.32), #3 Holland (10.36 Arcadia
win), and #5 (Williams 10.38 last week) in the entire nation for the
year. Northerners Jahvid Best (Salesian, Richmond) 10.39w seeded Arcadia
winner and 05 finalist Devin Mays (Lincoln, Stockton) hope to break
up the Southern party!
Girls 100 Meter Dash
--Elizabeth Olear (Louisville, Woodland Hills) blasted an 11.45 #2 US
clocking last week that stunned everyone, including defending champion
Ebony Collins (Wilson, Long Beach), who proved a mental giant last
June by rocketing to the Finals win after a stunned crowd quieted down
and realized they were not going to allow false-starter Kristina Davis
(Logan) back in the race. Jeneba Tarmoh (Mt. Pleasant) looks very sharp
in edging defending state 200 titlest Khrystal Carter (Valley Christian)
in the CCS 11.39w-11.43w, with Cherrelle Garrett (Mt. Eden) impressive
out of the NCS.
Boys 800 Meters
--Some big-margin local winners will collide. Scott Crawford (Oak Ridge)
was the Arcadia winner in a surprising 1:51.60, and looks back on top
of his act after some illness. Rocky Richardson (Madera) looked very
dangerous in a huge Central Section win at 1:52.54, with Cory Primm
(Westlake) 1:52.65 last week (1:52.61 best) and Ryan Gamboa (Upland)
1:51.68 two weeks back, looking tough! Richard Jones (Benicia) has
run real close to 1:52 also. Richardson takes it out, so if you want
to win you'd better tag along!
Girls 800 Meters
--Mia Lattanzi (Palo Alto) showed some fine dual meet abilities as the
season went along, with a super peak to a state leading 2:09.65 in
the CCS meet. Kate Grace (Marlborough 2:10.81) and Emily Dunn (Esperanza
2:10.35) have looked good last two weekends in the South, with Renisha
Robinson (Mitty), Ashley Hodges (Deer Valley), and Lea Wallace (Vintage,
Napa) showing the ability to be on the victory stand!
Boys 300 Meter Hurdles
--Let's hope for no wind and a good David Klech early step pattern and
pull out the record books after his early April 35.45 at Arcadia. Quick
developing Jeshua Anderson (Taft, LA) 37.00, Alex Wilright (Franklin,
Elk Grove) 37.34, racing for those team points, national frosh record
holder Reggie Wyatt (North, Riverside) 37.42, Terry Prentice (Diamond
Ranch) 37.42, and upset SS winner Dylan Nielson (Palm Desert) 37.62
make this a good event in Klech's jetstream.
Girls 300 Meter Hurdles
--If she is not saving it for the 4x400 relay Ebony Collins could take
down the school record here, which happens to be the 39.98 national
record by Lashinda Demus from 2001! A perfect race by the Wilson of
Long Beach junior would make her the second at the school under 40!
Potential for same domination here as Klech in Boys' contest, with
good group chasing. Kiani Profit (Muir) 41.97, Jamesha Youngblood (Hercules)
42.15, and Teirra Ward (Logan) 42.24 rank among the top fifteen in
the nation currently!
Boys 200 Meter Dash
--Mr. Nellum from LB Poly once again using his variety of gears and overdrives
to stay ahead of the pack and ratchet up the Jackrabbit points. He
has handled the Southern Section group in recent weeks, and it may
turn out to be Northerners Jahvid Best (Salesian) and Devin Mays (Lincoln,
Stockton) 21.03 and 21.04 at the Sacramento Meet of Champs who best
challenge Nellum.
Girls 200 Meter Dash
--Olear dusted the Southern Section 100 and 200 crew last weekend so
powerfully one wonders if Sa'de Williams and the group can psychologically
come back to challenge the USC bound star! Jeneba Tarmoh and defending
champ Khrystal Carter from the CCS were rolling last weekend, but it
seems to us that Olear is one senior going out to make her mark (however
she does have heats in Friday that include the 4x4 baton event!
Boys 3200 Meter Run
--Michael Cybulski (Royal) was a stunning 59.7 final lap in his 8:52.24
that showed powerful domination in the Southern Section. Ben Sitler,
Mikel Thomas, and AJ Acosta (back end of double here) from around the
state have the ability to run with or ahead of the rest of the Southern
Section crew, but it may be just a matter of when Cybulski plans to
move this Saturday.
Girls 3200 Meter run
--Have a feeling plans may be for something special here by Jordan Hasay,
with the talented frosh star rewarded for her Arcadia 10:07.56 3200
win that took down a flock of age and grade records with a standing
ovation by the big crowd. After some doubles and careful race planning
an assault at 10:00 may be in the offing, with all comers welcome to
tag along and help with pacing by the Mission College prep star who
seems to get stronger as the contest goes along! A nice calm evening
would be nice.
Boys 4x400 Relay
--1-3 times nationally last weekend down south with JW North 3:11.86
(Gutierrez 46.0 anchor) and LB Poly 3:12.12 (Nellum 45.1 to end it)
another super re-match. Two great programs laying it on the line, the
way such an affair should end!
Girls 4x400 Relay
--Wilson (Long Beach) continues its super relay tradition, and with Ebony
Collins capable of splitting whatever it takes wherever it takes, they
are very tough to argue with, though Logan and Fairfield from up north
will battle with JW North, Poly, and the Southern crowd in what should
be a super deep event.
Girls High Jump
--With state leader Amber Kaufman (Branham) and defending titlest Desirae
Gonder (Stockdale) absent consistent Jasmine Day (Costa Mesa), runner-up
in 2005, could step up for the win. Susan Jackson (Napa), back from
2005 knee surgeries, Moira Robinson (Mt. Whitney, Visalia), and Mindi
Wiley (Sonoma Valley) could take it all!
Girls Pole Vault
--Tori Anthony (Castilleja) 13-04 has won the big 2005 show-downs, with
Tori Pena (Edison, HB) and Allison Stokke (Newport Harbor) 13-footers
from
down south. Stephanie Bagan (Granite Bay) is hot off a 13-00 clearance.
Girls Long Jump
--Ashika Charan (Claremont - Texas A&M bound) 19-11.5 is very sharp on
this facility lately, with Jackie Lewis (Hoover, Fresno) a good Section Finals
meet 19-04 nearly 3 weeks ago. DeAna Carson (Wilson, LB) healthy or not,
is scheduled here (19-04.5 best), with Amber Purvis (Benicia-SJ 19-02) capable
of challenging Karyn Dunn (Diamond Ranch) and Lauren Reid (Rio Mesa) from the
South.
Girls Triple Jump
--One of the classic showdowns of the meet, with Ashika Charan (Claremont),
the national outdoor leader at 41-09.5, and Ke'Nyia Richardson (Holy
Names, Oakland), who was 42-02.5 indoors this winter! Watch this duo
battle!
Girls Shot Put
--Oak Grove's Chidinma Onyewuenyi was 44-09.25 last week to lead section
action, with Erin Delaney (Paso Robles) 47-02.75 and Rosario Sanchez
(Selma) 47-00 attempting to get out to their mid-season distances for
the win.
Girls Discus
--Sarah Robles (San Jacinto) leads the state at 161-06, with Miranda
Wilson (O'Dowd, Oakland), Lauren Guerrieri (Davis), and Jameena Hunt
(Morse, San Diego) from around the state leading the battle against
other southerners Hillary Fraser (El Toro) and Jennifer Steed (Arroyo
Grande)
Boys High Jump
--UCLA bound Terrence Austin (LB Poly) (6-10) hopes to help the Jackrabbit
team cause with a win here, with teammate Nick Armstrong (6-09) capable
of also climbing on the victory stand. Alex Black (Downey 6-10) jumps
well here, with Argonaut's Casey Ryan 6-9 in Sac Joaquin qualifying
action. Brandon Adams (San Ramon, NCS) leads the state at 6-11.25 and
is in the field here.
Boys Pole Vault
--Granite Bay hopes for a fourth straight title between the duo of Ryan
Shuler (17-04) and Scott Roth (17-05), with consistent Greg Woepse
(Mater Dei) 16-07 awaiting a call should either falter. Casey Roche
(St. Francis, Mountain View) 16-07 and Kevin Jones (University City,
San Diego) 16-04 have fine marks and good competitive records.
Boys Long Jump
--The run-ways here may look ragged, but the first jump we saw two weeks
ago was Terry Prentice's 24-05 for Diamond Ranch, so there is some
pop in that rubber and board! A group of 23' plus jumpers will battle,
with Tevion McDowell (Tulare Western) 23-09.75 nearly three weeks back
in Central action, Josh Harrison (Rio Mesa, Oxnard0 23-09.75 to win
the Southern Section State Qualifier.
Boys Triple Jump
--Zuheir Sharif (Franklin, Elk Grove) 50-10.25w and Richard Sherman (Dominguez)
50-00 are jumping for individual and team plaque glory as part of fine
squads! Neelon Greenwood (Fairfield) rode the Sac Joaquin winds to
a big improvement to 50-01.25w a week back, with Charles Amadi (Edison,
Fresno) 49-06 seasonal best dangerous from the Central area. Karlin
Stewart (Mt. Miguel, Spring Valley) surprised with a 49-04.75 section
win last week.
Boys Shot Put
--Morse's Darius Savage (65-09.75) from San Diego goes in search of competition,
and will find it in the Orange County contingent of Nick Robinson (El
Toro) 65-01 and Bo Taylor (Newport Harbor) 63-11! Tyler Dragon (Clovis
West, Fresno) 60-09, and Joe Canavan (Palm Desert) 60-02.25 are others
over 60 feet this spring!
Boys Discus
--Darius Savage dispensed with the state's best at Arcadia with his 206-04
win, with Bo Taylor (Newport) second there, a 208-05 dual best. Nick
Robinson (El Toro) 197-00 will be in the thick of the title hunt here,
with Cameron Carter (Mayfair) 193-03 from earlier in the spring.
