RESULTS UNDERNEATH THIS STORY!

Stockdale's Anderson dominates Area sprints

She doesn't really need extra help. After all, Stockdale's Romesha Anderson holds the top Central Section marks in the 100 and 200 meters -- the same two races she won at the Central Section meet a year ago.

But there she is, gaining an extra boost on the competitors. Her secret?

A mantra.

"For my reward," Anderson said.

The short phrase is uttered piece-by-piece during races. "For" at the first turn in the 200, "my" as she enters the straight away and "reward" when nearing the finish line.

"It just helps me get there," she said.

Her winning phrase helped once again at Wednesday's South Area meet held at Liberty. Anderson ran the fastest 100 (12.01) and 200 (24.78) in the Central Section this season, as she qualified for the Section Championships to take place next Wednesday in Visalia.

"She is hitting exactly where she should," Stockdale track coach Dave Longsinger said. "She's right on pace."

Anderson's pace was just enough to keep her in front of her cousin, Ridgeview's Dominique Lauderdale, in both races. Lauderdale held the fastest 100 and 200 times in the Central Section at points this season, but was slowed in April by a hamstring injury. The South Area meet was her first time to run in nearly a month.

"Before this, I was kind of nervous," Lauderdale said. "But I had my hamstring all wrapped up, and it was fine."

Lauderdale, who owns the second fastest section times this season, finished a quarter of a second behind Anderson in the 100 and only .13 seconds behind in the 200.

But it came as no surprise to see the two leading the way. With family ties, their competition started well before this track season.

"I think having a Lauderdale out there helps (Romesha)," Longsinger said. "These girls know if they don't run their best, they're going to get beat."

Anderson wouldn't be denied, though.

"With Romesha," said Longsinger, "whether it's her cousin, her dad, or me, she comes ready to compete."

Competition at the boys pole vault was heated as well. North's Josh Speirs, who held the highest vault among competitors at 14 feet, 6 inches, finished second to Liberty's Matt Klinchuch. Both cleared 14 feet, but neither could get over 14-6. Klinchuch took the win on prior misses by Speirs.

The 14-foot vault set a personal record for Klinchuch, his second personal record of the day.

Earlier, Klinchuch ran a 42.01 in the 300 meter hurdles to qualify for the Central Section meet in that event as well.

"I was more focused on this," Klinchuch said of the pole vault. "I just decided to go out and run my race."

Competitors finishing in the top four in each event qualified for the Central Section meet to begin at 4:30 p.m. next Wednesday in Visalia. In addition, the top three non-qualifying times from among three areas will also compete at the Central Section meet.
