CIF STATE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS AROUND THE CORNER
19th Annual Event Returns to Woodward Park in Fresno

ALAMEDA – The 2005 CIF State Cross Country Championships will be held
Saturday, November 26, 2005, at Woodward Park in Fresno. More detailed
information about the event can be found in the handbook on the State CIF
web site (www.cifstate.org).

The course is 5,000 meters and has hard packed dirt trails with some grass
and asphalt. It features mild ups and downs over rolling hills with one
steep short hill. Team and individual winners will be crowned in each of
five divisions for both boys and girls.

There are five returning champions, including four on the girls side –
Girls Division II: Kauren Tarver (So, Serrano); Girls Division III: Shelby
Buckley (So, Corona del Mar [won at Rosary in ’04]); Girls Division IV:
Ariel Wright (Sr, Bishop O’Dowd); Girls Division V: Katie Fritke (Jr, Mt.
Shasta) and Boys Division V: Austin Fritzke (Sr, Mt. Shasta).

Sara Bei of Montgomery is the only individual to win four state
championships, having done so in 1997-2000. Five runners have claimed three
titles while 21 participants have topped the field on two occasions, most
recently accomplished by Mark Matusak of Loyola in 2003-04. In team
competition, the McFarland boys have won nine titles, the most state crowns
by a CIF school in any sport. University of San Francisco girls’ team has
six championships, all in the last nine years.

General admission for the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Tickets can be purchased at the park Friday, November 26, from 12-4 p.m.,
and throughout the day on Saturday.

MEDIA NOTES:
Media who have not already requested credentials may do so by completing a
credential request form. Forms are available on the State CIF web site by
clicking on the “Media” link on the front page. The deadline for requests is
Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at 12 p.m. Late requests for credentials will not
be accepted.

Media members who have been approved for championship credentials may pick
them up Friday, November 25 at the Coaches Packet Pickup area from 12-4 p.m.
Media who do not claim credentials Friday will need to show their media
affiliation identification to gain complimentary entrance to the park on
Saturday, and then come to the working press area, located near the finish
line, to obtain their working credential.
