***DIVISION II GIRLS***
"This one's truly up for grabs!"
Edison has spent much of the mid-season atop the rankings, but
West Torrance is getting healthy, Brea is lurking, and Mater Dei is eager!

Edison High is unbeaten in Division II action this fall!

This could turn out to be one of the finest division II girls races ever. West Torrance, Edison, Brea-Olinda and Mater Dei have all spent some time this year ranked number 1 in the division. West Torrance recently welcomed back Alison Kielty (18:56) from injury to join Allison Stoakley and Angela Spadafino in making their run at the title. Edison (HB), led by Courtney Kostrikin (18:45) has been blazing courses all year and ran a fine 97:14 in prelims to show they are ready to fight for the title. Brea comes in with the fastest preliminary time at 96:42 with Anne Gustafson (18:47) and crew coming prepared to claim their stake in the championship. Serra League champs Mater Dei had the 2nd fastest prelims time(96:52) with Samantha Constantini (18:35) and a slew of outstanding freshman looking to show they are not to be counted out. Looking to get into the mix is South Hills, Serrano, and OC power Woodbridge. Serrano’s sensational freshman Kauren Tarver (17:41) will be aiming at the individual crown. Battling Tarver will be Orange County champion Whitney Blue from Newport Harbor, San Marcos’ Miranda McCune, South Hills’ Kristina Wilson, Katie Vahoviak of Burroughs along with Constantini (MD), Gustafson (BO), and Kostrikin (E). –Dreux Valenti, DyeStatCal Contributor

"Past meets Present to determine the Future"
Longtime powerhouse Corona del Mar has its best collection of
front-end talent in ages while revived Rosary looks to pull an upset!

Rosary's Shelby Buckley has been dominant this fall!

Perennial power Corona Del Mar and Rosary (Fullerton), look to battle for the division supremacy. Coach Bill Sumner’s Sea Queens, led by Sarah Cummins, Hilary May, and Ahlia Kattan, will bring their “A” race to bring home CDM’s 6th girls title. Rosary frosh phenom Shelby Buckley (18:16) has led the Royals back to CIF after a two- year drought and blazed a school course record 97:09 in prelims to lead division qualifiers. Challenging them will be a solid Northwood group as well as Bonita, led by a fine trio of Laura and Julie Heuring and Wendy Darling. Yucca Valley, Rim of the World, and Oak Park all are excellent squads that could move them onto the podium. Challenging for the individual title will be Buckley (Rosary), Rocio Pelayo (18:34) from Bolsa Grande, Anna Farias-Eisner from Harvard Westlake, and the Heuring twins from Bonita.Dreux Valenti, DyeStatCal Contributor

***DIVISION V GIRLS***
"A wide-open, finishing-kick thriller!"
Flintridge Prep, Maranatha and Woodcrest Christian are among
the chief players in a great showdown battle that'll be a treat to witness!

After pulling an upset at the Mt. SAC Invitational, can a repeat be achieved?

Woodcrest Christian pulled a nice surprise in capturing the Mt. SAC Invitational divisional sweepstakes title earlier this season, but preseason favorite Flintridge Prep remains within striking distance as does a fine Maranatha crew. Individually, defending state champion Tani Brown has to be considered the favorite, although several others have stepped up well this fall! Woodcrest Christian junior Ashleigh Pratt clocked a division-leading 19:30 here last month in pacing the Royals to a 101:05 team-time effort against top divisional rivals. Maranatha very well could be the favorite now, especially after a controlled 101:51 effort in last weekend’s qualifying as its lead foursome crossed the finish stripe together in 20:08. Rachel Gill and Sara Ireland lead the Minutemen, who closed the regular season ranked third in the state this fall. Flintridge Prep, which emerged unscathed as champion from the sensational Prep League, is led by sophomore Lauren Von Der Ahe and Sarah Peterson. Desert Christian of Lancaster, a program usually opting to split its squad and run conservatively during the regular season, is a top threat here, with Jessica Wick leading the charge. Vivian Webb School and Chadwick, two more quality entries from the Prep League wars, are among the leading contenders for the remaining berths to state. – Rich Gonzalez, DyeStatCal.com Editor

***DIVISION IV GIRLS***
"Orange Crush!"
Orange Lutheran is the clear favorite, but Orange County rival Laguna Beach
and Paraclete have the tools on board to formulate a championship recipe as well!

Lauren Campfield should be in the title hunt!

Just as on the boys’ side, the Division IV battle for girls should come down between Orange Lutheran and Laguna Beach, although Paraclete and first-year rising bullet Great Oak could loom as viable threats. Individually, Calvary Chapel’s Jennifer Bowles could challenge Lutheran’s Jacqueline Turner as the class of the field, posting an 8-second win over Laguna Beach’s Alex Crawley in qualifying action a week ago. Lutheran, ranked atop the divisional poll all season long, rested a few of its top runners while coasting through qualifying last weekend, with All-CIF performers Jacqueline Turner and Kelly Rendon among those giving the crew more across-the-board strength than any other in the division! Laguna Beach was right on the heels of heat winner Paraclete in prelims action, with LB paced by Crawley and Catherine Gordon in flashing its worth as the division’s #2-ranked team. Great Oak, a first-year program out of Temecula, has matured quickly this fall, with prelim heat winner Lauren Campfield (19:21) and frosh teammates Jessica Barnard and Christiana Lang giving the crew nice front-race presence at this level. Morro Bay (headed by Kim Canete) and Fillmore (paced by Paulina Mercado), a pair of programs with ample postseason tradition, are also in the mix along with mountain power Big Bear (led by Kari Kompaniez). Although starting out lacking depth at season’ start, a handful of programs have progressed in recent weeks to supply the division with a respectable collection approaching the state-qualifying meet here today. – Rich Gonzalez, DyeStatCal.com Editor

***DIVISION I GIRLS***
"Will the Mt. SAC team-time record be history?"
Ventura and improved Fountain Valley are leading the parade, but
powerhouse rosters from Ayala, Thousand Oaks, Canyon, Dana Hills, etc. loom!

That sea of gold from Ventura looks pretty tough to us!!!

Truly, the best has been saved for last! With undoubtedly the finest collection of sectional team talent in th entire country, the Division I girls’ clash prmises to be a bombing affair full of top-end programs battling for those coveted seven berths to Fresno! Ventura, a team which flirted with the all-time lists after a monstrous racing peak a year ago, returns better than ever – with Emily Spiker, Molly Bailey and Jessica Bryant leading a sensational crew regarded among the finest in the entire country and now receiving consideration as perhaps the finest in state history! Fountain Valley, which grabbed national attention after tallying record-like mileage training totals over the summer, has been beating the best programs thus far in 2004, including runaway efforts at the Orange County Championships and the very deep Sunset League Finals. Crystal Reed (17:50 here last year) leads the Barons, who have Elizabeth Coe, Nicole Giove and a host of others interchange at the front spots with alarming regularity in fielding the deepest (through 20 runners) program in Southern Section memory! Murrieta Valley, which has amassed the most impressive list of invitational victories this spring (Bronco, Stanford, Inland Empire, Mt. SAC), has super talent Liana Boucher headlining a group with stunning depth at the scoring positions! Ayala, no stranger to the November-time championship wars, with created another Division I monster crew, with Briana Cahn and Alyssa Doniak spearheading one of the toughest squads on the national landscape. Thousand Oaks and Canyon are two additional mega-power programs well within reach of the current national-class powers, with the former keyed by Lynne Fletcher and Kathleen Vance and the latter riding the talents of Kellie Corbett and Brenda Cohen. Dana Hills and Royal figure to battle it out for the seventh berth to state, just ahead of a fine Peninsula program armed with potent front-running gems! Dana Hills had six runners finish within a stunning 9-second gap at last weekend’s prelims while clocking 96:32, with five upperclassmen among that mix! Royal, which has put the pressure on the juggernaut Thousand Oaks program on the Ventura County scene, has Devin Noe and Kelcie Weimann among the premier runners in its arsenal. Peninsula boasts among the individual favorites in Brittany Morreale (17:35 to lead qualifying), although Corona junior Alma Escobar (17:40 on the slower Woodward park course) might still retain the inside track to the title. Glendora’s Christy Adamyk, Highland’s Alyssa Craft, Bloomington’s Cristina Olivas, Quartz Hill’s Brieanna Morris, Warren’s Robyn Guggiana and the aforementioned others will have this race field busting at the seams on the front end here! Hold on, this barnburner will close out the day in what we are calling as the fastest/deepest race in Southland history! – Rich Gonzalez, DyeStatCal.com Editor
