         In the first one hundred meters of the girls' varsity race, the pattern was set for a barn burner at the front end of the race. Kimberly Donatelli of Buena went out hard and fast. The challenge was quickly met by the Ventura duo of Jessica Bryant and Emily Spiker as they were willing to join Kimberly at the front end of the race. The first 880 yards of the race were passed in 2:42, with Kimberly having stereo Cougars shadowing her around the course. The trio passed the mile in 5:34, already gapping the field. The halfway point was covered in 8:43 with the three being right together. Jessica and Kimberly would pass the 2 mile in 11:43 with Emily but a second down. Miranda McCune of San Marcos had now moved into fourth with Larissa White of Buena running a tremendous race to maintain fifth at this time, just in front of Dos Pueblos¹Any Chandros. . Behind Chandros was a trio of Ventura runners, with Laura Mason holding down seventh, Lauren Martinez in eighth and Reilly Wagner in ninth.
        With 1/2 mile to go in the race, Jessica Bryant of Ventura had surged to a 5 meter lead over Kimberly Donatelli, with Emily Spiker 20 meters back from Kimberly. Jessica powered through the last half mile in a sizzling 2:40 to secure her second Channel League individual championship in the past three years. Her time of 17:19 was a course record by 26 seconds and improved her 2003 time on the course by 41 seconds. Meanwhile, in the last 600 meters, Emily Spiker had also caught and passed Donatelli, screaming home in 2:43 for the last 1/2 mile to take home second place in 17:23. McCune passed Donatelli with just over 200 meters to go and would finish third. Gaining the fifth spot was Larissa White of Buena while Lauren Martinez of Ventura and Laura Mason of Ventura gathered the last two first team all league spots.
         Teamwise, the Cougars of Ventura scored 25 points to win the meet and capture their seventh straight Channel League championship. In doing so, the Ventura girls would shatter their own team time record on this course, bettering the time of the 2003 State Championship team by 1:47 to run a sizzling time of 90:46. With the Cougars running 92:33 last year at the Channel League Championships, it is interesting to note that the same 2003 team ran 92:52 at CIF Finals. Buena finished second in both the meet and the league, finishing with 49 points today. The third place team in the meet and the final qualifying team for CIF was San Marcos, totaling 67 points today. Dos Pueblos was fourth with 98 points and Santa Barbara finished fifth with 121 points.
         On the boys' side, Donovan Smith of Buena took the race out extremely fast. A sub 2:00 800 meter runner in track, Donovan used his speed to quickly open up a slight gap on Chris Gurney of Ventura. Hanging back about 10 meters was Taylor Garrett, also of Ventura. This race order would stay consistent through the first two miles. By 2 1/2 miles, Chris Gurney had opened up about a 5 meter lead and was gradually expending it over the fading Smith of Buena. With 300 meters to go, Gurney had a comfortable lead. At this point, Chris¹s teammate, Taylor Garrett made a strong effort to close the gap on Donovan Smith. Passing Smith with just under 300 meters to go, Garrett starting pulling on his teammate. Catching him with 200 meters to go, the Cougars pushed toward the finish line. With just over 100 meters to go, Taylor had opened up a five meter lead and was on his way to his first ever Channel League Cross Country title. Crossing the finish line in 15:12, his time is second on the all time Ventura list to the legendary Josh Spiker, currently of Wisconsin fame. Chris Gurney would cross the line in second to give the Cougars the first two spots in the race.
         In the team race, the Cougars took home first place, scoring a total of 21 points. In doing so, they captured their first league title since 1999. Buena finished second in the race with 62 points. This allowed them to finish third in the league and qualify for CIF. San Marcos and Dos Pueblos both finished with 86 points, with Dos Pueblos having the faster sixth runner, thus giving the DP Chargers third place in the race and kept them in second place overall in the league. Santa Barbara scored 105 points to finish fifth.
