NCS Preview:
Here is a look at the NCS races today, and how they might shape up. The
rankings and evaluations are strictly the ramblings of the author, and
only to provide background on each race.

Division I (1500+)
Girls
1. Amador Valley
2. Monte Vista
3. Deer Valley
4. Antioch
5. Castro Valley

Amador Valley put the big hurt on Monte Vista in the EBAL championships.
They both were chasing a very good San Ramon team (which competes in D-
II), and the Dons outpointed the Mustangs. Kendall Nemeth and Cailtin
MacDonald lead Amador, while Daniel Gergley paces Monte Vista. Deer
Valley was BVAL runner-up to Carondelet and has a history of being strong
in the post-season. The Wolverines are led by Jenna Carvajal. Antoch was
only 4 points behind Deer Valley in their league finals, and are led by
state veteran Mellie Regalado. Castro Valley had to revamp mid-season
after losing their top 2 runners for the season due to injury. An
aggressive influx of freshmen promotions, led by Karlina Beringer, has
helped the Trojans.

Boys:
1. De La Salle
2. Monte Vista
3. Liberty
4. Deer Valley
5. James Logan

De La Salle has all the marbles again this year. Even with top runner
Tom Cox in and out of health, their pack is the best of the section.
Monte Vista had to run hard to beat back the challenge of Livermore in the
EBAL finals, but prevailed by a single point. Chris Simpson leads the
Mustangs. Liberty took the measure of Deer Valley for the honor of beeing
runnersup to DLS in the BVAL. The Lions look to Matt Smith up fornt, with
the Wolverines run with a tight pack. Logan has the defending state
champion in Yosef Ghebray, and Daniel Tesfai is a worthy #2 runner for
them.
Individually, Ryan Lewis of Ygnacio Valley will be a factor./

Division II (1150-1499)
Girls
1. College Park
2. San Ramon Valley
3. Carondelet
4. Northgate
5. Livermore

A return to health of injured veterans Nicole Pennes and Kelsey Dallara
gave the Falcons the oomph they needed to go from very good to very good
indeed. They beat three other state ranked teams in their league meet,
and hope to carry that on into the NCS and State meets. Their #3 state
ranking looks entirely justified. San Ramon Valley also enjoys a state
ranking ( #6) and impressively turned back all challenges in the EBAL
finals. Alexis Nordine and Allie Colaco lead the Wolves. Carondelet took
the BVAL easity behind the talents of league champ Ashleigh Montgomery and
teammate Ashley Chavez. Northgate took 4th in the tough DFAL, ahead of D-
III state ranked Acalanes. The Broncos rely on the talents of Jenny
Perham and Kelley Cureton. Liverrmore is a team on the rise, and chased
some good teams in the EBAL to finish 4th there. Melissa Gutierrez is the
frontrunner for the Cowboys.

Boys:
1. Livermore
2. San Ramon
3. Northgate
4. Alameda
5. College Park

This is perhaps the closest division to call, as all of the teams
involved have improved over the season and so have not provided a
consistent year-long picture. Livermore jumped out of the crowd with a
narrow loss to Monte Vista in the EBAL finals using an apparently
interchangeable lineup. San Ramon was just behind the Cowboys in that
race, with Tristan Blair their top runner. Northgate has Michael Wickman,
and prevailed over College Park by a point in the DFAL finals. Alameda
labors in obscurity in the ACCAL, but emerges to give good indications of
itself. Led by Arran Rogerson, the Hornets threw a 1-2-3-4-5-6 wet
blanket on the rest of the league. College Park, as always, is rock solid
behind Jeff Smith.
Eureka High School has an individual in HDNL winner Kyle Lau. Hayward's
Mauricio Hurtado, the HAAL champ, will be tough on his home course.

Division III (811-1149)
Girls
1. Maria Carillo
2. Campolindo
3. Miramonte
4. Acalanes
5. Tamalpais
The Pumas of Maria Carillo are nationally ranked, state ranked, and the
best team in the North Coast. About the only thing that can beat them
today is their own ecpectations. Amy Robinson leads an army of very good
runners. Campolindo edged out arch-rival Miramonte in the DFAL finals,
and hopes to carry that momentum over to today. Catgheirne Murillo leads
Campolindo, while Miramonte rallies behind Jenny Bergren. Acalanes is
also state ranked, and has the talents of DFAL champ Mo Huber to lead
them. Tamalpais has risen as the new power out of the Marin County
League, and will be looking to make a larger impression. Emily Olson
leads the troops from Tam. A very individual in this division appears to
be sophomore Katelyn Cavelli of Drake, who is a talented young state
veteran.

Boys:
1. Maria Carillo
2. Campolindo
3. Miramonte
4. Acalanes
5. Tamalpais

Maria Carillo has some incredible team grouping, as they ran their top 5
within :17 in postionss 2-3-4-5-6 inthe NBL finals. Chris Viscaino tore
apart the DFAL finals to lead Campolindo to the team win narrowly over
Miramonte. The Cougars edged the Matadors, who run with David Penskar in
fornt. Acalanes is on a youth movement, with the bulk of their talent
sophomores. Tamalpais can no longer sneak up on anyone this year,
overtaking perennial power Redwood to win the MCL this year. MIke Park is
their leader.
Jake Schmitt of Redwood is the prohibitive favorite to win another NCS
title. Matt LaForte of Alhambra is a top finisher as well.

Division IV (351-810)
Girls
1. Bishop O'Dowd
2. Piedmont
3. Arcata
4. St. Mary's
5. St. Joseph's

Bishop O'Dowd is remarkably strong this year, unveiling their new hot-shot
freshwoman Alexi Pappas who is very close to their established star Ariel
Wright. The Dragons dominatged the HAAL this year. Piedmont once again
relies on the speed of the Sparks twins and hopes to rally depth behind
them. Arcata has state veteran Yasmine White, and the Tigers took the
HDNL easily, but their depth is spread out. St. Mary's has Gabrielle
Rios-Sotello to lead them. St. Joseph's appears to be the only other team
to challenge any of the above at any time this year.
Individually, Ashton LeSieur opf Casa Grande and Taylor Parks of Petaluma
are proven talents.

Boys:
1. Moreau Catholic
2. Piedmont
3. Bishop O'Dowd
4. St. Mary's
5. Arcata

Moreau owns this division this year. State ranked, and with 5 seniors all
within :45, the Mariners look very strong. Tolny Quintana leads this
pack. Piedmont went 1-2-3 in the BSAL, with Mark Ceraldi the leader for
the Highlanders. Bishop O'Dowd vainly chased Moreau in the HAAL, but at
least came closer than they did in the dual meet. Ben Gutierrez leads the
Dragons. St. Mary's was the only team in the BSAL to keep Piedmont
honest, running behind Kevin Duffy. Arcata was beaten by Eureka in a bit
of an upset in the HDNL finals. The Tigers use the talents of Cat
Corrigan to lead them.
Individually, Mike Becker of Casa Grande and Tony Quiroga of Healdsburg
are very strong runners.

Division V (1-351)
Girls
1. University
2. Berean Christian
3. College Prep
4. Cloverdale
5. Willits

The story, as usual, starts and ends with the Red Devils of Univeristy.
They have been the class of this division for a decade. This year's
version features veteran Grace Hunter leading the squad. Berean
Christian, with the Adameic twins, and College Prep, with Diana Trump,
look to be the ones battling for the runner-up spot. The Coastal Mountain
conference will counter with their top two teams, Cloverdale and Willts,
to break up the BCAL domination of D-V post season. Cloverdale has Jen
Miller in front, and Willits leads with Cheynee Waldram. Menlo Academy's
Alesandra Rogers looks like a quality candidate individually, as does
Julia Malvino of Middleton.

Boys:
1. University
2. Head Royce
3. College Prep
4. Crystal Springs Upland
5. Lick Wilmerding

University holds all the cards here, too. Behind Robbie Hagbom, they went
1-2-3-4 on the BCL-West. Head Royce held off College Prep in the BCL-
East, with Konrad Murphy the leader for Head Royce and Mike Katz doing the
honors for College Prep. Cyrstal Springs nicked Lick at the league finals.
TAylor Holubar leads Crystal Springs, and Alex Wu leads Lick. Other teams
to watch out for in the ultra-competitive division are Berean Christian
with Cory Todd, Santa Rosa Christian, and St. Vincent's.

much all Red Devils, ranked #4 D-V in the state.
