Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL), just completed our league meet Saturday November 13, 2004 - Site: Hayward High School. The weather was awesome! We had a few muddy spots from Thursday's down pour but the conditions were great. We actually got down to short sleeves. The kids did not disappoint. There were some great efforts turned in by the girls varsity elites. I have included some shots of the winners both boys and girls (See attachments). Their efforts are as follows.

Girl's Varsity

Individual Winner
Ariel Wright (11th) 17:50  Ranked 3rd in the State. Ariel not only won the girls varsity title but broke the meet record in the process (Lisa Gillis 1997 3rd Place finisher State Meet Fresno).
Special Note: Second Place went to the Bishop O'Dowd freshman sensation, Alexis Pappas (9th). Alexis has captured many age group titles. Her time qualifies her as the all time female freshman runner for the H.A.A.L as a varsity runner. She is seen being congratulated by her team mate Ariel Wright in attached photo.

Team Champion
Bishop O'Dowd 1:35.13 (picture attached)

Special Note: O'Dowd had 5 runners finish in the top 10

Boy's Varsity (3.0 miles) Individual WinnerMauricio Hurtado(11th) 16:00 w/ 5:25 first mile > State meet qualifier 2003. Mauricio marks the first Hayward male runner to capture the league title in 17 years, Kevin Berkowitz State Champion. Mauricio is pictured with his coach Will Matthews, That would be me!  :  ) My first league champion 32+ years. Tough League!!! Kevin was coach by Larry Guinee Castro Valley sensation > late  70s. Special Note: Antonio Quintana, Moreau Catholic finished a very close 1 second behind Maurico with a very serious, late charge at the finish. Mauricio played catch me if you can. Leading a tight field of 5 runners through the first 2 1/2 miles. He left it all on the coarse. He gave it all he had. Team Champion
Moreau Catholic H.S. 1:22.42 (picture attached). Phil Wilder, coach
