The Varsity Girl's race featured defending state champions Miramonte (D3) and College Park (D2), as well as state ranked Campolindo, Northgate and Acalanes.
At the mile mark, Mo Huber (Acalanes) led Jenny Bergren (Miramonte) and Brianna Larson (Las Lomas), while Nicole Pennes (College Park) followed the trio about 10 meters back. About 15 meters behind her, Catherine Murillo (Campolindo) and Drusia Dickson (Acalanes) were
positioned between College Park's Kelsey Dallara and Eugenie Foote, with Lizzy Eskildsen of College Park making a move to separate from the majority of the field in 11th place.
The team competition through the first mile was difficult to read beyond College Park's solid front four, as Campolindo, Miramonte, and Northgate appeared to have numbers in the second pack. Miramonte's core of Diana Chernikova, Lauren Finzer and Lindsay Chan sat behind Jenny Perham of Northgate in this group.
Through the second mile Huber continued to lead with Larson glued to her heels. Pennes caught the leaders at about 1.5 miles while Bergren faded. Meanwhile, Foote began a charge from 9th place in the middle mile, overtaking Bergren at the two mile mark to move into fourth. In the final mile Murillo, and teammate Marie Casabonne, as well as Perham, also moved up into the top ten. Miramonte's Chan appeared to struggle. Team competition appeared to have College Park leading with a strong four while Campolindo moved three in front of Miramonte's second runner.
At the base of "Finale Hill" with 600m to go Huber and Pennes ran shoulder to shoulder. Larson dropped to fourth place as Foote crested the hill into third.
Huber held off Pennes through the finish, which included a nasty stretch of slush and mud from the week's rains. The rest of the course, which primarily traverses dirt trail, was tacky with only an
occasional mud slick. Times on the course were about 10 to 20 seconds slower than would normally be expected due to these conditions.
The Boy's race featured a runaway effort by Campolindo's Chris Vizcaino. Darting to the front in the first half mile, he never looked back. By the mile mark he had opened a gap of 50m on the field.
Daryl Zalan (Miramonte) and Matt LoForte (Alhambra) headed up the chase group, with the next pack another 20m behind. Miramonte looked good early with five athletes in the top twelve. Again, the second mile of the Hidden Valley Park course provided a shake up of the top ten. Michael Wickman (Northgate) and Jeff Smith (College Park) moved up from 8th and 12th at the mile respectively while Daniel Mejia (Miramonte) and Alex Love (Acalanes) faded.
Vizcaino had little trouble though, continuing to build his lead through the finish. -Chuck Woolridge, College Park High School
