Buchanan girls and Madera boys maintain the upper hand - Saylor sets record!

Boys.
Madera and ClovisWest started out quick, with 6 Madera and 4 CW athletes in the top 15 at the mile mark. Benny Madrigal of Madera was followed closely by Sophomore Mikel Thomas of Clovis. Madera had three of the next 6
runners, with Jonathan Peterson (So.) of Clovis and Russell Pfaff of Clovis East running up with CW's Cesar Rodriguez. By the 1.5 mile mark at 'the Rock' Thomas was on the shoulder of Madrigal and Peterson was challenging Moreno and Pulido of Madera for 3rd. Madera still held a strong position with their 4-5 running in the top 10. Clovis's 3-4-5 were back behind the Buchanan duo of Geis and Farnsworth as well as CW's 2-3-4. It looked tight for second team place. By mile 2.5, the race sorted itself out, with Thomas just ahead of Madrigal (photo is at 2.1 mile mark) and Peterson making a charge behind Moreno for 3rd. Clovis's 3-4-5 were beginning to move up,
trying to close the gap on the talented and deep Madera squad. Thomas won in 15:44, Madrigal 15:54, Moreno 15:57, and Peterson 16:00.

Girls.
Buchanan's Lauren Saylor took the lead quickly, blazing to a 5:26 first mile, with Clovis's Krystal Duke on her heels in 5:30. Clovis's Amanda Johnson came by in third, ahead of a strong group of Buchanan runners who
would not relinquish the lead from that point. Clovis East made a valiant charge, with a strong pack lurking behind the Buchanan 3-4-5 runners. By the 2 mile point, it was clear that Saylor and Duke were running
exceptionally well even if the gap between them seemed to widen a bit. As these ladies continued to burn up the course, a battle raged between the second and third place teams. Clovis ended with 3 PR's as Clovis East had
an average season best of over 30 seconds per runner. Alas, both teams fell well short of the very strong Buchanan team. Lauren Saylor finished in a central section record 17:40, and Krystal Duke followed with a school
record 18:15 on the fabled Woodward Park course. -- Bill Buettner (Clovis High Asst. Coach.)
