Skeptics will point to the freshman-year photo/time of Shalonda Solomon on the front page (aided by a huge wind, no less) and quip that she's hardly improved in her four-year stint at "The Beach". A few Pan Am Juniors medals tend to rifle through that theory reeeeeeal quick! Solomon, in very careful hands and with a conservative schedule thus far this spring, is now ready to rocket among the Golden State's star-studded all-time elite lists. Barring injury, she will be sharp enough (now) at this stage of the season that we see no one here beating her. The runner-up spot is interesting. You have Bishop Amat's Jasmine Baldwin, who has been a bit inconsistent at 200m this spring, but not at 100m (beats Shalonda in a same-time photo finish one week, loses by .04 the next, then hammers more elites the week after that) and Long Beach Wilson's Ebony Collins (who we feel is the best all-around fitness athlete in the Golden State, hands down -- put her anywhere short of 1500 meters and she will excel). As an extra treat, you've got Rancho Cucamonga frosh Sade Williams now in the fold, ready to chase after the big guns while slicing up the all-time frosh lists!

Shalonda will win, but the real race is for second. Win or lose, expect some of the Serra League principals/coaches to continue their whining. Baldwin, who doesn't even attend Bishop Amat (instead, at a local small school in a hardship situation), was granted permission to compete for Bishop Amat after school officials approached the league and asked for the blessing, with one source within the league stating "they told us they had some girls who had no team but wanted to just run and have some fun." After Baldwin started running fast, more than a few league member schools took exception. Bottom line: It sounds like a few coaches/principals were guilty of adhering to a double standard -- let them run if they are slow, but not if they are fast and hurt our own chances.

The battle at 400 meters could be more interesting, but we're thinking Poly's Jasmine Lee will prove us wrong and make it one-sided.  Lee has the most gleaming credentials (literally, as they include shiny PanAm Juniors medals), but has failed to wallop the competition thus far. Rancho Cucamonga's Sade Williams appears to be the future here -- especially since Ebony Collins has opted to hone their talents elsewhere on the oval -- but keep an eye on super talent Mindy Neeley, who could possibly emerge as a sensational heptathlete down the road.

Much intrigue and anticipation was stolen from us when Long Beach Wilson fell victim to a dropped baton at the Division I prelims, but the real crime was the fact that the Bruins had such a huge lead in the race at the time (last exchange) but failed to quickly regain composure to re-claim the aluminum cylinder and still advance. Instead, they stood shell-shocked. Can Poly avoid the same mishap this weekend? The Jackrabbits have already shown propensity to run this at near perfection, evidenced by their yet-to-be-ratified (merely procedural timeline issues) national record of 44.50 at the Penn Relays last month! With a little bit of help from the crowd, some excellent temperature/calm conditions (although it might be slightly cooer than ideal by the 6 p.m. start time), and some real care exercised in the exchange zones, we just might see another short relay national record! J.W. North, an ultra-serious contender for the state meet team runner-up plaque (sorry, Poly has the top spot all but sewn up), needs to get the stick around in fine fashion yet again to make sure it advances. even so, they appear to have slight room for comfort.

In the long relay, look for Poly to run fast, but be more concerned just to advance -- and then go after a rocket time in the meet-ending 4x400 at the state meet in Sacramento. Long Beach Wilson is no longer the same 3:40 team that jelled with Carol Rodriguez on its roster at the Texas Relays. Nevertheless, one has to believe that the Bruins will find SOME WAY to at least challenge Poly in the four-circuit baton challenge. Could anyone truly fathom otherwise? Enter Rancho Cucamonga -- a team that already shell-shocked Wilson at the section finals, and now seeks to become only the 11th California school to ever break 3:41. If it chases Poly hard enough, it just might do - and catch the conservative Jackrabbits napping here!

And how about those distances...

The 800 could very well become a sequel of last weekend's Division I clash between veteran senior Alysia Johnson and the true newcomer Emily Dunn. Johnson has been in the state meet wars before, and entered this spring as among America's premier talents in this talent. While she was building a superb resume in the two-lap event over the last few years, Dunn was busy kicking a soccer ball as a budding 'futbol' talent on the pitch. More than anything, Dunn will benefit from the experience here, but a great attitude and a supportive environment might help increases the chances for a surprise.

For ll the hub-bub regsarding the Moore League's excellence in the sprints, let's applaud the fact that two of its athletes (Wilson's Young and Poly's Bournes) have also made it in the mid-distances!

The 1600 is a classic battle of Anne St. Geme's speed (yes, she's the daughter of the famed one-time Southland talent, Ceci St. Geme) against Liza Pasciuto's strength (and not too shabby speed for her either, for that matter), with a handful of leading talents trying to keep up! Corona del Mar has built an excellent tradition of having runners reach this stage of the season with great race-day plans in mind, and we expect more of the same here. This would be an entertaining one to watch play out if it were for a coveted title, but it's merely to advance. Not weekend, it's a different story -- but by then, expect the presence of Alicia Follmar and Lindsay Allen to change the scenario completely.

Seven kids t sub-10:50 here from last weekend? YOWZA!!! Strength is to be rewarded here, which would tend to favor Pasciuto in a go-for-the-win environment. Since we're only taking about qualifying, watch for Flacks to run relaxed, which is when she appears to be at her best. One one hand, these two could help dictate the race's pace. However, the rest of the field must remain wary to not show too much respect, and allow the at-large standard (10:50.10) to drift out of reach.

Then there's the hurdles...

Several top choices were checking in with us last weekend, a bit terrified that J.W. North seemingly had TWO individuals with amazing times in the high hurdles. Relax, people... the CIF-SS meet was plagued by a timing snafu in that event, forcing a revert to hand times, although CIF initially released times in hundredths. North's Domenique Manning remains the favorite.

In the long hurdles race, Ebony Collins will be chasing to take down her own national frosh record (40.81, achieved last week), and seeks to start stalking former LB Wilson star Lashinda Demus' national record (39.98). Collins has the inherent strength of a collegiate All-American. Just a case of honing the technique now, andhitting the right rhythm needed through those barriers!
