SS Masters State Qualifying Meet

Friday 5/28 - Cerritos College

Boys

100m - Good field with an interesting mix!! Lionel Larry 10.37w last week, with Derrick Jones (LB Poly) 10.47w. Terrail Lambert (St. Bonaventure), big-time footballer showed amazing acceleration between 10 and 40 meters, racing to a full couple meter lead. As Lionel Larry began his charge in the middle of the contest at about 55m he pulled, limping through the finish, with it appeared Derrick Jones making a huge move and maybe was the winner. Off what appeared a "dead-even" start for all Lambert's acceleration was stunning! Wind +1.1 - Jones 10.50 - Lamber 10.54 (Notre Dame bound for football)!!

200m - Lionel Larry replaced by an alternate in Lane 5, with Derrick Jones (LB Poly) blasting off the turn in the lead, and racing away into the tape over Kelvin Love (Lancaster). Wind was +1.1 with the timer showing just under 21.00. 20.97 on the sign at the finish would be #4 in the country for the year.

400m - Ken Moon (Corona) completed a magical local year here. Out in 11.5, he led narrowly at 22.6 at the 200, with Marcel Keeling (Serra) and Wes Williams (Esperanza) closest. At the 300 it was Moon at 34.9, with Wes Williams and Alan Lindsay (Moorpark) on his outside next. Moon held his form into the finish at 47.61 a comfortable winner under Keeling also under 48.0.

800m - Interesting group! 26.0 at the 200 with Bryan Rodie (Royal) a narrow leader over Josh Castaneda (Bonita), Haddan (Woodbridge) next at 54.6 at the 400. Castaneda moved up to lead at 1:23.0, with Haddan charging the homestretch to win in the mid 1:51's. Great contest as the event should be run. #8 time in the nation for the winner.

1600m - Brandon Bethke (El Toro) 4:09.53 last week, four seconds ahead of the next qualifier. 31.7 at the 200 with Ruben Ramirez (Don Lugo) on the inside and Mark Matusak (Loyola) on the outside. 64.2 at the 400, with Matusak impatient, moving into the lead. Bethke was in the middle of the pack. Bethke upped the tempo to 31.7 for the third 200 to come by at 1:35.9 for the 600. 2:07.5 at the 800 with Matusak and Ramirez even across the track. 2:39.3 at the 1000m, with Ramirez, Matusak, and Bethke moving up. At the 1200 Jared Bell was 4th. Ramirez was 3:10.7 with Bethke immediately moving into the lead. A gap had formed after the first four, but it looked like another race with a lot of potential qualifiers. Bethke was 3:41.0 with 200 to go with a two second lead, with Brandon cruising in to a win in the low 4:11's.

3200m - 9:12.04 challenging auto qualifier. Fitsum Tesfa (Don Lugo) early leader at 33.9 for the first 200. 70.4 at the 200 had all close. the Mercado's, Diego and Daniel, sophs, took over the lead during the second lap, with they and Tesfa just ahead at the 800 at 2:22.0. Shot out of a cannon was Angel Marquez (Wilson, Hac Hts) sprinted to the lead during lap 3 and covered the 200 up to 1000m in 33.4. The pack was back up soon, with 3:30.9 at the 1200. 4:41.1 at the 1600m. 5:50.9 at 2000m and five laps (right at 70 or 9:20 pace). Tesfa pushed it a bit at that point and the field spread a tad (34.8 first 200 of lap 6). 7:00.2 with two go and the pace quickened. Tesfa led down the backstretch of lap #7, with Dan Nunn (SLO) suddenly a factor up front, Brendon Bethke (El Toro) near, and Andrew Tachias (Covina) close. 8:08.9 with one to go. Big last laps needed for at-large past fifth. 8:40.3 with 200 to go, with Andrew Tachias (Covina) rocketing the final 200 for the win under 9:10 and under 30 the final 200. It appeared that a couple of people after the top 5 just missed the auto-time.

110m HH - Marquis Profit (Muir) broke early in the lead, with Bryan Payne (Trabuco Hills) closing quickly for second (wind +1.5). Finish clock said 14.02.

300mIH - Good group! Great race! Hassan Rahmaan (Serra) on the outside led early along with Marquis Profit (Muir). Into the homestretch Bryan Payne (Trabuco Hills) made his move into the lead, and was ahead until he stumbled over the final hurdle and was nipped by Profit at the tape.

400m Re - LB Poly only team under 42 last week at 41.84, with Dominguez 42.13 and Cypress 42.24 next coming in. Dominguez led thru the first leg, with Notre Dame charging into the second exchange in the lead. The Notre Dame anchor runner slowed near the end of the zone, and Derrick Jones flew by for LB Poly for the win, with Lionel Larry rocketing in for Dominguez.

1600m Re - LB Poly 49.1 lead-off for the lead. Down the backstretch Mission Viejo, Trabuco Hills (took the lead) and Los Alamitos close. Poly back in the lead at the exchange after a 48.9 leg. Poly rocketed ahead on leg #3, stretching it to 25m at the 200 of leg #3. Poly held on with a 48.9 leg, with Derrick Jones purring into the backstretch ahead of Mission Viejo, Trabuco Hills, Canyon, CC, and Los Alamitos. Derrick Jones let them get close, then raced away with a 47.2 leg that appeared to have Poly right at or under 3:14. Some great anchors. Ahlstrom Los Alamitos 47.9. Poly 3:13.96 the winners, with Canyon (CC) 3:16.15 next.

HJ - Matt Turner (Chaffey, Ontario) on misses a 6-08 over soph Terrance Austin (LB Poly) and Jonathan Golden (Azusa).

PV - Kurt Boehm (Paraclete, Lancaster) along with Dustin Deleo (Los Alamitos) and Joshua Lubeck (Royal) all over 15-08, finishing in that order.

LJ - #3 and #4 jumps in the nation! Demitri Mosby (Gahr) started out with a 24-06.25 (wind 0) on his opener to throw down the challenge. Marcel Keeling (Serra) 24-05 on his second jump (+1.3 aiding), with Tim Frazier (Claremont) 23-06.25 (+1.1) on that jump, and Marcus Logan (North, Riv) 23-08.5w (+2.4) during that round.

TJ - Michael Johnson (Rancho Cucamonga) big 48-08.5 and 49-00.25 (+0.9) on his opening two jumps to dominate the competition. Alfred Perkins (Arroyo Valley, San Bernardino) 47-08.5 (+1.5) in second.

SP - Mark Lewis (Arroyo Grande) good series. 62-03 opener with 62-02.5 second toss, and four throws over second placer, teammate Stephen Field, 60-09.5. Oscar Rodriguez (Palm Desert) next at 58-09, with everybody earning the state meet qualifying standard of 56-10.5. Maybe a good argument for a dozen to the State qualifying meet, as more with the potential to make the standard. Interesting---

DT - Matt Gray (Esperanza) 189-04 on his final toss to retake the lead from Eddie Cornell (Burroughs, Ridgecrest), who had thrown 188-04 on the event's second to last throw.

Girls

100m - Appeared someone on the inside moved on a recall. Starters held counsel, and Lakeisha Lawson (Victor Valley) was taken from the field on the false start rule. Great race! Shana Woods (LB Poly) out behind the field with the wind +2.3, in the middle of the track Shalonda Solomon had the lead, with blue-clad Jasmin Baldwin on our outside steadily moving up. Over the final 15m both sprinters stretched for the tape, with it appearing Baldwin on the outside maybe the winner, but the photo was probably needed here! Informed Baldwin the winner by .01

200m - Classic!! Shalonda Solomon held the stagger over Jasmin Baldwin on to the straightaway, one lane outside the Bishop Amat star. Down the homestretch Baldwin held her steady form, working up and appearing to move just past at the tape for the win. Baldwin showing impressive competitive aplomb, timing her move just perfectly. 23.15 Baldwin - 23.17 Solomon (wind +0.2) - looks interesting towards Sacramento!! Baldwin #16 AT US - AT Californian #10 for the amazing Bishop Amat senior who we are told is Mt. SAC bound next year.

400m - Jasmine Lee (LB Poly) came to run!! out at 12.4, she had a big lead at the 200m mark at 24.6. Into the homestretch (300m 38.3) no one was close, with frosh Sade Williams leading the pack over 10m back. Mindy Neely closed strongly and appeared to be under 55 in third behind Lee in the mid 53's (53.63 exacty) and super frosh Williams. Six qualifiers with Ruffin (Beaumont) 56.05 leading the group.

800m - 29.9 with everyone close, Annie St. Geme (Corona del mar) leading early. Esperanza's Emily Dunn up by the 400, with 64.9 at the 400 (35.0 second 200 2:20 pace second 200). Down the backstretch all were close, with Trichler (San Marcos) on the outside, and Alysia Johnson (Canyon, CC) strong finisher last week on the outside. Johnson burst by at the start of the turn, with Dunn pressing her to the finish, but the UC Berkeley bound Johnson (who plays good soccer in the winter) blazed into the tape in the high 2:10's for the win. Very powerful run with something in the tank for next week.

1600m - 5:00.80 the at-large standard - 8 under that coming in and the ninth at 5:01.07. 38.1 opening 200 with the entire pack close. 76.2 at the 400 with Lauren Magdaleno (St. Paul) and Liza Pasciuto (Murrieta Valley) leading the tight pack. Annie St Geme (Corona del Mar) moved up at 500m, with 1:54.0 at the 600 with Pasciuto leading slightly. Up to the 800 all were within 5 meters in the nine member field, 2:34.0 at the 800 with no one making any moves . 3:13.0 (39 seconds) at 1000m. 3:49.1 with one to go and a lot full of run. Pasciuto and St. Geme leading, with St. Geme taking over at 4:22.5 with 200m to go. Surprising Olga Aulet-Leon (Peninsula) charged the final 150m, charging by the 1500m at 4:38.5,and racing to a one to go, it was Olga Aulet-Leon from Peninsula blitzing the final 150m for the win at . Everybody broke 5:00 and goes to state.

3200m - Super deep 8 lapper with 10 under 11:00 from last week! Real job to open up with 41.1 at the 200m. 83.9 at the 400 with Peninsula's Brittany Morreale the leader. Tiny Alma Escobar (Corona) was in second. 2:40.5 at the 800. Lindsay Flacks (Harvard-Westlake) moved up to share the lead during lap 3, with 4:07.0 at the 1200. 5:26.9 at four laps with Liza Pasciuto and Brenda Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga) next. Flacks seemed to be pushing the pace during lap 5, with the 2000m point coming up at 6:46.0 as she had spread the field single-file. Flacks had 20m half-way through lap 6, with the first 200 of that segment run in 39.2. 8:04.7 with two to go with Magdaleno and Pasciuto back about 25m. Rothenburger (Dana Hills) was 4th. Flacks hit the bell lap at 9:22.3 running hard. No one pressed the Harvard-Westlake star as others pressed towards the 10:50.10 3200m qualifying time outside the top 5 finishers! Seven qualifiers.

100m Hurdles - Dominique Manning (North) steadily moved away for the win, with Ebony Collins (LB Wilson) first run down by Gayle Hunter (North, Riv) and Kimyon Broom (Serra) for second. Timing board said 13.67 at the finish. (wind reading +1.7 mps). Broom nice improvement to 14.06 in second.

300m Hurdles - Great Field! Dashanta Harris (LB Poly) lane 6 out hard, racing emotionally after a false start in the Highs last week. Ebony Collins, the super frosh at LB Wilson charged over hurdle 5 and took the lead into the 200m mark. Collins raced down the homestretch to the win while Shana Woods (LB Poly) reined in her teammate Harris. Collins' cut-downs - 6.3 - 4.4 - 4.4 - 4.8 - 4.9 - 5.0 - 5.2 - 5.3 and into the finish. All nine qualified for the State meet.

400m Re - LB Poly best time by over a second and a half coming in off last week at 45.11. Jackrabbits were in lane 5, with North (46.88) and Rancho Cucamonga (46.97) also under 47. Kind of close between LB Poly and North (Riv) thru 3 legs, with Shalonda Solomon charging the anchor for the win at 45.76.

1600m Re - Rancho Cucamonga early leader low 56's with Poly (56.7 opener) moving ahead on the inside down the backstretch. Poly led after a 54.5 second leg. Rancho Cucamonga moved ahead on leg #3. PV - Kristen Dormanen (Temecula Valley) winner at 12-07 over Whitney Johnson (Mission Viejo) on misses. Surprise in third with ninth grader Allison Sokke (Newport Harbor) (correct spelling) rewarded with a new National Frosh Record with 12-07, joining the first two over that height! Stokke a serious gymnast, a good carryover to the vault!
