FYI, here is a brief summary of the race today at Yorba Regional Park.

El Modena’s pack took the first half mile out hard. They had five in front of our 5th. However, Brea’s Eduardo Serna (who did not race last week due to patella tendonitis) went out intentionally more conservative. He simply wanted to “see how he would feel in a race” after taking some rest days and doing some intense therapy. By 1.25 miles into the race, the front pack consisted of four Brea runners and Curtis Aukshunas from El Modena. Meanwhile, Serna from Brea moved up very well from about 20th to 9th behind two Tustin runners. Just past the 2 mile mark, the Brea pack began to slowly break apart—it was now a three man race for 1st place between DiMeo and Moulson of Brea, and ElMo’s Aukshunas. With 900 meters to go, Moulson and Aukshunas dropped DiMeo. The two ran stride for stride for the next minute, but when they came across a tiny bridge around the last 400 or so, Aukshunas started to turn towards the wrong path. I was right there, and I yelled at him to get him back on course. What happened next impressed me, Moulson also turned and yelled to Aukshunas. Then he actually slowed his pace so that Aukshunas could make-up the 10 yards he had lost. The two ran together again stride for stride for the next 100, but then Moulson clicked into another gear and gapped him by five seconds for the win. I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I was incredibly impressed by this Brea runner’s sportsmanship. Brea ended up with 5 in the top 8 for a total of 21 points. The spread was 29 seconds. ElMo’s young crew had an admirable score of 51 points for second place.

Although this season is far from over, I want to go on record now and say that El Modena will be a serious force to reckon with in SS DII next year. Their runners are not only hard workers and gutsy racers, but they are enthusiastic and great sports as well. John does a terrific job with his crew.

Hope all is well.

Best Regards,

Jeremy Mattern
