Eastern Athletic League

11/06/03

Rudy Martinez and Lindsey Kirschman (auto-record lady!) CR Runs with Enterprise nipping Pleasant Valley in both Girls and Boys in great meet!!

The Eastern Athletic League Finals were held on Thursday at Foothill high School in Palo Cedro and hosted by Shasta High School of Redding. The course was 3.05 miles with weather conditions chilly, and a light rain falling throughout. The course was in excellent condition thanks in part to Bill Joeseph of Foothill. Here's a brief summary of the Varsity boys and girls races with the top 10 finishers. (Full results were not provided and will be forwarded as we get them)
Varsity Boys-
The team titles were at stake with three teams having a realistic chance of staking claim to them. Shasta came in at 5-0, Pleasant Valley was 4-1 and Enterprise at 3-2. The Hornets would need a win and a Pleasant Valley 2nd in order to pull it off. Rudy Martinez of Shasta led from start to finish to claim his second EAL title in three years and set a course record of 15:31. Russell Carrol of Chico was 2nd with nate Ogden of PV in third. The Hornets countered with Frosh Eric Malain in 4th, Eric Webster in 5th. Tyson Teesdale of Foothill was 6th and rounding out the all league team was David Short of Shasta in 7th. the team title saw Enterprise jump from third to a share of the title with Pleasant Valley- Enterprise had 48 points to PV's 50. What a close and hotly contested race. My hat goes off to all the young men who ran so well. There were 11 boys under the 17 minute mark on the course this day.

Varsity Girls-
this was a two team battle with Pleasant Valley (ranked 10th in State in D2) and Enterprise. Once again the two teams had an awesome battle with the Hornets getting the narrow win this time in 29-33. The league title was shared by both teams as it only seemed fitting with two outstanding squads. The race again was a Lindsey Kirschman affair as she clipped her own course record she had set last week in a dual. She ran it in 18:08 to claim top honors. Hanah Hodgkinson of Pv was next in 19:04, Janessa Hoppe of Enterprise was 3rd in 19:05, Shaffer of PV 4th , Stephanie Frescas of Enterprise 5th in 19:07, Natalie Robertson of Foothill was 6th in 19:09 with Katie Moravec of PV rounding out the all-league team in in 7th at 19:11. On this day there were 12 girls who broke the 20 minute bearrier which shows just how strong this league was. Great job ladies on a fantastic showing.
