Ohio Cross Country 2001

Strongsville Mustang Invitational

10/6/01 at Strongsville OH

Results: Boys - Girls

Summary

The pre-race hype was all about the girls' race, both team and individual. However, St. Joseph Academy turned the race into their own personal showcase by outrunning a quality field that included state-ranked teams and a defending state champion. Senior, Rachel Mistur, led her underclass teammates with a 7th place finish in 19:15 as they swept past the Mustangs of the host school. The race came down to a battle to see which team would walk off with the runner-up trophy.
Beaumont, a reigning state championship team, could do no better than fourth in the tough field, but was appeased with having the individual titleist. Sophomore, Maggie Infeld, smashed the meet record with a blistering 18:16. Infeld and FL finalist, Michelle Sikes of Lakewood, ran the course shoulder to shoulder for three miles before Infeld was able to sprint home with a hard-fought win.

In the boys' varsity race, Hudson kept on rolling. The Explorers have bounced back from their outing in the Meet of Champions at Hilliard Davidson with three straight invitational wins. Junior, Wesley Smith, scored an individual victory in a meet record 15:43 on the soggy course, slowed and muddied by a 14 hour rainfall the previous night.

Smith was challenged briefly by runner-up Glenn Collins of Hoover, but was able to take control of the race at his discretion. He got great support from his teammates as they ran a 34 second split from #2 to #5 to overwhelm a very good field. The top three teams were recently ranked in the top 8 in the Ohio Coaches XC Poll.
