Summary:
All-American Felicia Guliford made short work of the competition to win her 5th consecutive Gallup Invitational title. The early pace of 6:00 on a sandy high altitude course seemed to have little effect on Guliford who pulled away right after the mile mark and coasted to a :41 second victory over second place Kristin St. Germaine fo Chinle Arizona. Guliford seems to be working back to the form that allowed her to be a Foot Locker All-American and an individual champion of the Great American in 1999.

The team competition ended up being a battle between two of the best teams in the 4A division from New Mexico. Both Los Alamos and Albuquerque Academy battled in the middle miles with Los Alamos eventually outdistancing Academy by placing 4 in the top 20 individuals. Both teams impressively beat the nationally ranked Gallup team that was previously unbeaten this year.

Summary:
Previously unbeaten Ricardo Hernandez of Carlsbad set the early pace leading through the first two miles of the sandy and hilly Red Rocks State Park course that is the site for the New Mexico State Championships. At the two mile point the effects of an early face pace and the 6500 ft elevation cause Hernandez to fade slightly and both Davis of Gallup and Bunting of Albuquerque Academy caught Hernandez. Not far after that C.R. Davis pulled away from Bunting and went on to win by 20 seconds. Davis now looks to be one of the co-favorites for the 5A title come November. The other favorite is Jeremy Johnson of Manzano was not in attendance but remains undefeated this season.

The team competition came down to a battle between the 4th and 5th runners from Gallup and Albuquerque Academy. At two miles Gallup had a 9 point lead. Academy's 4th and 5th picked up a couple of places late in the race while Gallup's lower varsity faded some on their home course. The 13 point margin allowed for Academy to take the Boys / Girls Combined Score Traveling Trophy from Gallup for the first time in 13 years.
