Kearney goes for its ninth consecutive Class 'A' (largest) boys
title. Kearney is especially stacked in the distance events, where
they are expected to go 1-2-3 in the 3200. Drew Tonniges of Kearney
has gone 9:15 this year, and Cory Wroblewski and Colby Wissel aren't
far behind. Aaron Plas of McCook has gone 7'2" for the state
record in the high jump, and he will compete in Class 'B'. Derric
Werner of Tilden Elkhorn Valley has gone 196'11" in the discus,
which is the Class 'C' state record. Bubba Kramer of Atkinson West
Holt went 61'8" in the shot, also a 'C' record. There is an
oddity in the Class 'C' boys 400m dash: three 400m state champions
from last year will compete in the one race. 2001 Class 'B' and
2000 All-Class champion Jeff Phelps of North Bend, 2001 Class 'D'
champion Lucas Horn of Overton, and 2001 Class 'C' champion Joel
Bacon of Lyons-Decatur all are in Class 'C' this year, due to enrollment
shifts. Phelps is questionable with a nagging leg injury, though.
