from Paul Jorgensen, Flathead
The Mountain West Classic is the biggest meet in Montana. We had
five schools from Spokane including Mead High School and North Central
High School. There were close to1000 runners competing in the four
high school races. Kurt Michels (Flathead) won the boys race. He
managed to beat some of the best runners from the state of Washington.
His time of 14:47 for three miles should place him high in the boys
rankings. Also, Zoe Nelson (Flathead) won the girls race with a
fine time of 17:51. Zoe broke the course record by 1 second and
now has broken three course records in a row. Short in stature but
boy can she run.
The old girls record was 17:52.9, which was set by Emily Kroshus
who ran for the Calagary Spartans in 1998. Nelson led from start
to finish and finished about 18 seconds ahead of her neartest competitor,
Jamie Geissler from Mead High School. In the boys race Kurt Michels
from Flathead took over the lead at about the mile mark and cruised
to the win with an excellent time of 14:47.21. Both Flathead teams
finshed second to very good teams from Spokane. Mead who is ranked
number two in the nation placed 3 in the top 10 to easily win with
a low score of 44 points. Flathead finished second with a score
of 81 points. In the girls varsity race North Central placed three
in the top 10 to defeat Flathead by seven points.
