Haskell Sweepstakes
In an interesting mix of total program strength, three of Kansas'
top teams met at Haskell Indian Nations rolling 5k and 2 mile course
for the Haskell Sweepstakes. The meet features a unique scoring
system, in which the top ten runners in the boys and girls races
are awarded points, with all other runners counting as pushers.
The boys and girls points are then totaled for the Sweepstakes Trophy.
All three girls teams were ranked in the state's top ten (Olathe
South #2, Lawrence Free State #5, Olathe East #7) while on the boy's
side Lawrence Free State (#3) and Olathe South (#7) are ranked.
Olathe East has qualified for four of the last five state finals
and has also received state votes.
Alysha Galbraith (Olathe South), the defending 6A state champion,
held back early over the course, but then moved away from Lawrence
Free State's Mallory Richardson to score a 12:27 to 12:43 win. Free
State's Lindsay Witthaus (13:02), Sarah Partride (Olathe South 13:08)
and Robyn Lee (Free State-13:08) rounded out the top five on a 2
mile course than ran about 30 seconds slower than last year's meet.
Olathe South scored 149 to take the girls title, while rival Olathe
East scored 162 with all scorers in the top 16. Lawrence Free State
took third with 193.
Free State dominated the boys race, placing seven runners in the
top ten. Olathe East's James Swartz set the pace for most of the
race, before falling to a late race surge from Olathe South's Jeremy
Holthaus. Holthaus won in 16:39 for 5k, with Free State's Jason
Jenny second (16:42) and Swartz third (16;55). Free State's Chris
White (17;04) and Olathe East's Zach Pope (17:05) finished the top
five. Free State scored an astounding (for this scoring) 98 to win
the boys, with Olathe East second at 183, and Olathe South third
at 203.
Free State's dominant boys performance enabled them to take the
Sweepstakes title with 291 points, over Olathe East (345) and Olathe
South (352).
