Donovan Kilmartin gets quad repeat, including 16-0
MR PV, leads Eagle to third straight title in 5A; Julene Bailey 12-7
MR with 3rd straight PV title; Nick Symmonds, Jennifer McPherson,
Jennifer Donatelli, Forest Braden, and Danielle Pridgen are multiple
winners
Junior decathlete Donovan Kilmartin for the third year in a row
led the Eagle High School Mustangs to the 5A Track and Field Championship.
For the second year in a row Kilmartin won all four events that
he entered. Last year he was the first track athlete in Idaho history
to win four individual events in the biggest division. Now he has
done it twice with his senior year still ahead.
Unfortunately, the event records were not threatened as Kilmartin
got food poisoning Thursday night after winning the high jump at
6'6", and the pole vault at 16'0" (state meet record),
and qualifying for the finals of the 110 hurdles in 14.2. Kilmartin
took one long jump 22'8 1/2" to win, went to the doctor for
two i.v. liters of saline solution and returned 30 minutes before
the hurdle finals which he won in a slow 14.57. Meridian High School
senior T.J. Tolman also performed well battling his own injuries
(pinched nerve in his heel) as he won the 100meters (10.97), 200meters
(22.08) triple jump (45' 10 3/4"), and ran a leg on the winning
4 x 100 relay (42.8).
4A highlights- Senior Nick Symmonds of Bishop Kelly
led his team to the state championship for the first time in 21
years with a 1:53.62 (800meters), 4:20.02 (1600 meters), 9:35.74
(3200 meters), and ran the anchor on the winning 4 x 400 relay.
Symmonds will be running next year at Willamette University in Salem,
Oregon. Senior Jennifer McPherson of Skyview for the second
year in a row completed her triple in winning the 800 meters (2:16.98),
1600 meters (5:04.31), and 3200 meters (11:15.9). Jennifer will
be taking her talents to Mississippi State next fall. Senior Jennifer
Donatelli of Mountain Home had a career day as she won the discus
with a throw of 146' 9", and the shot at 40' 8 1/2". Junior
Julene Bailey of Skyview won her specialty the pole vault
for the third year in a row with a new state meet record of 12'
7".
3A highlights - Senior Forest Braden of Bonners Ferry
who has signed his letter of intent with Boise State University
ran an outstanding double in winning the 3200 in 9:15.63 and the
1600 in 4:18.59
2A highlights - Junior Danielle Pridgen of Nampa
Christian for the third year in a row lead her team to the state
championship by winning the 400 in 57.39 and the 800 at 2:14.1,
and placing second in the 200.
