ROME GA 9/8/01 -- In the biggest regular season meet in the state
of Georgia and the unofficial
season opener, over 120 schools from 3 states provided some great
early season
action on a rolling, 2-loop 5000m course. The times are comparable
to McAlpine
in Charlotte where the Foot Locker Southern regional is run.
The 5A races provided fireworks early with Joe Thorne from Lakeside
and some of
the top teams finding unexpected competition. Thorne had company
for two miles
in Dan Fassinger from national #11 Brookwood and Andrew Heath from
Lassiter, but
Thorne pulled away late to take a 15:18 victory in a great show
of strength.
Fassinger hung on for second in 15:36 and Heath was 3rd in 15:47.
All three
runners are in great shape and were the only 3 under 16:00 all day.
In the team
competition, Brookwood was dominant in defeating Harrier #6 Southeast
team
Hoover from Alabama 68-188. Brookwood had a 16:19 scoring average.
A surprise
was Landmark Christian, a small private single-A school running
up in 5A and
placing 3rd only 22 points behind Hoover.
Defending 5A state champions Harrison placed 4 in the top 11 and
scored 61 to
defeat surprise Lakeside by 9. The teams scoring averages were the
best of the
day 20:03 and 20:10 - both better than Southeast #4 Marist in 4A,
who had a
20:29 average in a different race. Kathleen Turchin of North Gwinnett
ran the
day's best time of 18:52 for the win.
In the 3A/4A race, Marist won in a close duel with Westminster
65-67 with
Marist's Carla Uribe winning in 19:30. David Herren won the Boys
in 16:19 and
3A Westminster took team honors with 78.
2A Chapel Hill won the girls A/2A race 60-110 over Pace Academy
with Jenna
Downey of Holy Innocents holding off Greater Atlanta Christian School's
freshman
Jennifer Johnson in one of the day's most exciting individual battles
- both
running 19:50. With Landmark Christian's boys running up in 5A,
Wesleyan took
advantage with an easy win over Greater Atlanta Christian 57-86.
Defending 2A
state champion Criston Duvall won in 16:34.
