California State Meet

Girls 1600 lap by lap

Ale Barrientos comes All the way Back

Montgomery Santa Rosa sr Sara Bei, normally a closer, changed her strategy for this race. She went on top in the first lap and tried to steal the race. It might have worked against anyone with less of a kick than San Lorenzo Valley sr Alejandra Barrientos -- if she is fit. The big question was whether she was fit, since her rehab from a stress fracture a year ago was taking longer than expected.

Ale answered that question resoundingly with a burst on the last lap that ended the contest with startling ease in the dual of two former California 1600 meter champions (Barrientos in 1999 and Bei in 1998). This year's US#1 miler, Newport Harbor sr Amber Steen, finished third.

Here is the lap by lap progress of the race as Bei lengthened her lead each lap until the last.

After Lap 1, run in 72 seconds, with Bei taking the lead in the stretch,
followed by Steen and Barrientos.

After lap 2, run in 71 and 2:23, Steen is in second hiding Barrientos.

After lap 3, run in 72 and 3:35. Bei had her biggest lead at start of bell lap.

On the last lap, Barrientos steadily closed the gap down the backstretch
and then exploded into the lead on the far turn. With daylight already at the
head of the stretch, Barrientos peeked back to see whether Bei was coming again,
but the race was over. Barrientos circled the last lap in 64 seconds!
