Montgomery Santa Rosa sr Sara Bei, normally a closer, changed her strategy for this race. She went on top in the first lap and tried to steal the race. It might have worked against anyone with less of a kick than San Lorenzo Valley sr Alejandra Barrientos -- if she is fit. The big question was whether she was fit, since her rehab from a stress fracture a year ago was taking longer than expected. Ale answered that question resoundingly with a burst on the last lap that ended the contest with startling ease in the dual of two former California 1600 meter champions (Barrientos in 1999 and Bei in 1998). This year's US#1 miler, Newport Harbor sr Amber Steen, finished third.
