The Arkansas Meet of Champions went off on schedule Wednesday, May 16 at Lake Hamilton High School in spite of the Class 4A and 5A athletes having to compete less than 48 hours after conclusion of their storm-delayed State Meet. Nevertheless, three Meet of Champs records fell and one Overall record was set.A recap of the meets follows.Complete meet results (all State Meets and Meet of Champs) will be posted on www.ArkansasTrackStats.com .

 

In the Girls Division, Notre Dame-bound Tiffany Gunn of Little Rock McClellan (Class 5A) set a new Overall and Meet record in the 100m hurdles with a speedy 14.30.Gunn was a double winner taking the 300m hurdles in 44.30.Gunn�s effort broke the record of 14.44 set in 1997 by current Arkansas Lady Razorback All-American heptathlete, Dee Brown. Brandie Plyler of Centerpoint (Class 2A) continued her assault on the pole vault records. The Ole Miss signee sailed over 11�4.25� to set a new meet record although shy of her Overall record of 11�10�set the prior week.Chelsie Mock of Jessieville (Class 3A) who is headed to Arkansas-Little Rock to run for Coach Kirk Elias and the up-and-coming Lady Trojans set a PR at 2:17.44 in the 800m easily winning what was expected to be a hot race.Jamie Owensby (5:19.27, PR) the Bentonville junior (Class5A) again outran fellow Benton County miler Liz Santos (5:25.97, PR) the Rogers soph (Class 5A).A surprise winner to many was Pea Ridge (Class 2A) freshman Dianne Miller who set a PR and first time under 12:00 in the 3200m at 11:52.49.Miller knocked 44 seconds off her State Meet winning time of the prior week.Kesia Bass of Crossett (4A), another Ole Miss signee, logged the season�s second best 200m in winning at 24.85, won the high jump at 5�5�, took second in the LJ at 18�1� and grabbed 3rd in the 100m hurdles at 14.90.Amber Bledsoe of Class 2A Turrell won the LJ at 18�5�. Sarah Pfieffer of Class 3A Ozark added nearly four feet to her State Meet 2nd place finish and took the Shot Put honors at 42�5�.Monticello recorded the year�s top 4x200m time in winning at 1:42.28 while Class 4A Harrison upended Class 5A Bryant in the 4x800m in 9:50.68 vs. 9:55.41 to record the best long relay time of the year.The 4x400m was a barn-burner as the top three teams � Watson Chapel (Class 4A), Little Rock McClellan (Class 5A) and Pine Bluff (Class 5A) � finished within a .70 second span with Chapel claiming honors at 4:00.16.

 

Eric Gross� (Mt. Home, Class 5A) last race in Arkansas set yet another record as he slid by .24 seconds under the 1600m meet record set in 1985 and left his mark at 4:16.70. Gross, headed to Arkansas-Little Rock, was well off his Overall record set last week at 4:10.45. Gross has been invited to race in this summer�s Golden West Invitational.Shemar Bracey of Rison (Class 2A) nipped James Hamilton of Class 4A Hot Springs in a close 100m at 10.82 vs. 10.85 while cruising home to win handily the 200m in 22.03.The individual race of the night on the Boys side was the 800m where Kansas-bound Brandon Hodges (1:53.85) of Class 4A Hot Springs held off Mario Urguhart (1:53.98) and Robert McQuay (1:54.28) of Class 5A Pine Bluff.Antwon Hicks of Class 4A Hot Springs was a rare triple-winner by taking the HJ at 6�10�, the 110m hurdles at 14.28 and the 300m hurdles at 38.64.Class 4A Hot Springs recorded the season�s best in winning the 4x100m relay at 41.72 while Class 5A Pine Bluff was slightly off their leading mark in taking the 4x200m in 1:26.45.Hot Springs bested Pine Bluff again in the 4x400m with a season leading 3:16.62 to the Zebras� 3:19.22.Pine Bluff recovered from their upset loss to Class 5A rival Russellville in the 5A State Meet by taking the 4x800m in 7:57.66 to the Cyclones� 8:00.43.James Johnson of Class 5A Lake Hamilton hurled the saucer 163�9� to win the Discus title.
