Arkansas State Meet

DyeStat Elite Performances

from Arkansas Track Stats

The first year of the Arkansas track and field festival designed to increase attendance got off to a good start on Thursday, May 10 as the Class 1A and 2A State Meets went off as planned at Hot Springs. However, severe weather struck on Friday with torrential rains and fantastic lightning displays forcing postponement of the Class 4A and Class 5A meets until Monday, May 14. The Class 3A meet was completed before the sever weather arrived.A recap of the meets follows.Complete meet results will be posted on www.ArkansasTrackStats.com when available.

The Class 4A and 5A State Meets concluded Monday afternoon at Hot Springs after the storm delay on last Friday. The hot, sunny weather led to mixed results as the heat especially affected the 3200m races.Winners in all events from each classification plus the three next best performances qualify for the Meet of Champions to be held Wednesday evening at Lake Hamilton High School.

Jefferson County took home three of the four team championships with the Pine Bluff Zebras taking the Boys 5A, the Pine Bluff Fillies taking the Girls 5A and the Watson Chapel Lady Wildcats turning the hat trick in the Girls 4A. Only the Hot Springs Trojans in the Boys 4A kept Jefferson County from taking all four. Watson Chapel is a suburban community adjacent to Pine Bluff.

Three of the states leading distance runners turned in excellent performances and served up two new Class 5A records and one of three new overall record in this years state meets.Senior Megan Kale of Ft. Smith Northside did her part for the Lady Bears by posting the second faster Girls 800m this year and setting a new Class 5A record at 2:18.26 creating a potential showdown at the Meet for Champs with Class 2A champ Chelsie Mock of Jessieville. Mock, who announced her signing with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, posted the states fastest 800m earlier in the year at 2:17+ and clocked a 2:18.71 last week at the 2A finals. The twosome will be joined by Class 4A champ Tiffany Dodson of Harrison who cruised a 2:20.88 in winning her crown.

Kansas signee Brandon Hodges of Hot Springs coasted home in the Class 4A Boys 800m in a quick 1:52.86 as well as running a leg on Hot Springs 4A record setting 4x400m relay. The Trojans raced home seven seconds ahead of second place posting a 3:19.29 setting up a Meet of Champs showdown with Class 5A champ Pine Bluff which recorded a 3:21.29.

The big news of the day was Eric Gross of the Class 5A Mt. Home Bombers setting a new 5A and Overall record in the Boys 1600m with a blistering 4:10.45. Gross ran virtually by himself with splits of 62-62-63-63 while 13 seconds ahead of the next finisher.Gross, a UA-Little Rock signee, smashed the old record of 4:11.74 held by former Arkansas Razorback All-American and current pro runner, Brian Baker.

Hot Springs sophomore James Hamilton broke the 29-year old record of smooth Luther Guinn of Arkadelphia in the Class 4A Boys 400m with a smart 47.73 while teammate Antwon Hicks won the high jump in 610, the long jump in 217, the 300m hurdles in 38.42 and the 110m hurdles in 14.14.The latter mark ties a 33-year old record set by cool Joe Trotter of the former Pine Bluff Merrill.

On the Girls side in 4A, Antisha Anderson of Pulaski Robinson was a triple winner and dual record setter by winning the 100m in 12.08 (new 4A record), 100m hurdles in 14.58 and 300m hurdles in 43.89. The latter was a new 4A and Overall record. Latoya McBride of Watson Chapel took home two trophies with a 57 high jump victory and a 4A record setting performance of 57.90 in the 400m. Dyshonda Avery of Stuttgart set a new 4A shot put mark at 417 as well as winning the discus at 1166.

All in all 21 (16 Girls and 5 Boys) State Meet classification records were set or tied and three (2 Girls and one Boys) Overall State Records were set. New Overall records were:
